  • Arnoux-Lachaux Chambolle-Musigny 2014 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (89)

Bright, dark red. Slightly high-toned aromas of dark cherry, menthol, earth, leather and minerals; I might have guessed Nuits-Saint-Georges. Surprisingly supple and sweet in the mouth, offering considerable early appeal. Not especially complex but nicely full and satisfying. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and lingering suggestions of leather and saline minerality. This wine was vinified with 40% whole clusters.

  • Arnoux-Lachaux Clos-de-Vougeot Grand Cru 2014 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (90-92)

(50% vendange entier; 70% new oak): Deep, bright red-ruby. Musky aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, licorice and dark chocolate are a bit inexpressive in the early going. The youthfully stunted palate is somewhat musclebound and dry today, with the wine's sweetness currently in the deep background. This powerfully tannic Clos-Vougeot is likely to need extended bottle aging.

  • Arnoux-Lachaux Echezeaux Grand Cru 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92-94)

(60% vendange entier; 80% new oak; according to Pascal Lachaux, 90% of the vines here run north-south): Bright, deep red. Wonderfully elegant, expressive nose combines redcurrant, raspberry, iron, tobacco and underbrush complemented by sweet smoky oak. Suave and fine-grained, with the red fruit flavors lifted by a peppery topnote. This very silky, smooth wine finishes with terrific rising length and solid tannic grip. A lovely showing today: seems clearly better than the Clos-Vougeot in 2014. These iron-rich soils generally yield relatively tender wines in a Chambolle style, noted Charles Lachaux.

    Vinous (91-94)

(vinified entirely with whole clusters and aged in 80% new oak): Healthy deep red. Sexy aromas of red berries, spices, pepper and crushed stone. Distinctly extract-rich, rocky wine with terrific sappy energy and tensile strength. Comes across as a bit cooler in character than the Echézeaux and finishes with serious building tannins. The family's holding is in the highest, windiest part of this grand cru, including one parcel that's surrounded on three sides by woods and thus receives less afternoon sun.

  • Bachelet Monnot Meursault Clos du Cromin 2014 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (90-92)

The 2014 Meursault Clos du Cromin, which includes old vines planted in 1927 and young vines planted in 2000, has a delightful bouquet that is understated at first, coquettish and reluctantly revealing yellow plum, cold granite and flinty notes, more Puligny-like than Meursault at the moment. The palate is very well defined with a keen thread of acidity, well-poised fresh lime, green apple and a touch of gooseberry towards the persistent finish. This is a superb expression of this village cru.

  • Berthaut Fixin Les Crais 2014 (1x75cl)

Wine Advocate - Robert Parker (89-91)

The 2014 Fixin les Crais is limited to two barrels, one new and one used. It has a lifted black cherry and wild heather-scented nose that is very nicely defined. The palate is structured and quite terse on the entry, more masculine than I expected with good backbone and a strict blackberry, sea salt-tinged finish. This is very promising, especially considering that les Crais is not a premier cru.
  • Billaud-Simon Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2014 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (91+)

Bright pale yellow. Very pure but reticent nose dominated by wet stone and minerals. Extremely tight and uncompromising, in a taut, lemony style. Finishes very long and vibrant, with a soupcon of fresh pineapple. Bailly found this wine extremely rigid in the early going and put part of it in a cask and two barrels during the middle of its elevage; it was bottled just before Christmas. This wine clearly needs extended aging and will merit a higher score if it expands in bottle.
  • Billaud-Simon Chablis Grand Cru Vaudesir 2014 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94)

The 2014 Chablis Grand Cru Vaudesir has a clean and fresh bouquet with hints of blackberry leaf complementing the citrus fruit and cold granitic aromas. The palate is well balanced with precise citrus fruit, a keen line of acidity and plenty of mineral tension. There is a sense of animation and energy to this Vaudésir, and I can see it ageing beautifully over a decade or more. This is an outstanding Vaudésir from winemaker Olivier Bailly.

    Vinous (88-90)

(40% vendange entier; 20% new oak): Musky aromas of dark cherry, boysenberry, minerals and smoked meat. In a juicy, distinctly airy style, even a bit slight in the early going, but this wine also conveys an impression of stem intensity (and extraction) to its flavors of black fruits, flowers and spices. Finishes with firm tannins.

The 2014 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots has a lovely, sumptuous, generous bouquet with raspberry coulis, strawberry and cranberry aromas that yell at you, Suchots! The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, dark berry fruit here that is tightly wound at the moment, but there is good depth and once it finds its groove, this should turn out to be one of Nicolas Potel's best wines from this appéllation.

There is fine volume and density to the attractively detailed middle weight flavors that possess a caressing mouth feel, all wrapped in a balanced, complex and persistent finale. The 2014 vintage in Burgundy has been rung in with a great deal of local optimism and excitement. After three successive vintages of incredibly low yield and quantities, the growers of the Cote de Nuits were ready to welcome an easy vintage and the chance to make a bit more wine. Easy seemed to be the word on everyone's lips as the growing season presented few climatic challenges and viticultural decisions were by and large straightforward.

Tasting the wines from barrel, we quickly learned that the reds were easy to taste, forward and classical, while the whites were truly remarkable. More than one winemaker came forward to declare that 2014 saw the best white wines in a lifetime. Good levels of acidity kept the bundles of ripe fruit lovely, while the overall character of the vintage was in such good balance that the wines will be approachable from a relatively young age, while the best will age very well indeed.

In general the Cote de Nuits fared a bit better than the Cote de Beaune by virtue of having escaped the savage hail which effected the latter. As much as the hail devastated yields, it fortunately did not impact on quality and many producers managed to make some truly exceptional wines with great forward fruit and firm structure.

Overall this is a vintage with a lot to offer and for Burgundy lovers, it is one to celebrate. Each appellaton was true to style and the winemakers had room to impart their own subtle influence on the finish product. Freshness, flavour and verve are the keyword this year and they come together in bundles.
