Vinous (93)
Good dark red, not hugely saturated. Cool, medicinal scents of black cherry, spices and herbs. Juicy, pure and youthfully imploded, conveying excellent energy to its black fruit and licorice flavors. Not a fleshy wine but still easier to taste today than the 2015. Crisp acidity and savory minerality contribute to its penetrating quality, but there's nothing hard about this wine. Finishes with firm, ripe tannins and excellent length.Inc. VAT£1,140.80 -

This is so deep and energetic with chalk, sliced apples, lemons, juniper berries and white pepper character. It's dense and layered with fantastic depth. Approachable now and very intriguing, but give it three or four years of bottle age to see its full potential.Inc. VAT£871.49 -
(3x150cl) 2014Vinous (93+)
Pale straw-yellow. Very reticent scents of peach, pear and spearmint are less forthcoming than those of the Chevalier-Montrachet bottlings. Fat, saline and slightly disjointed in the early going; in a very rich but adamantly dry style. Shows full ripeness supported by penetrating acidity but this infant is not yet expressive or particularly complex. Strong minerality and building acidity on the tactile back end will require time to harmonize with the wine's fruit.Inc. VAT£4,541.52 -

(aged almost entirely in one-year-old barrels, mostly from Chassin): Bright red-ruby. Dark raspberry, dark chocolate, medicinal clove, licorice and spices on the nose, complicated by cinnamon and blond tobacco nuances. Plush, round and seamless, showing lovely subtle spicy depth and a hint of chocolate to the very pure, inviting flavors of raspberry, mocha and minerals. Silky and aromatic in the mouth in spite of its obvious oakiness, and smooth on the finish. There's a good bit of Pinot Beurot here; Bouchard used to eliminate it from this wine but Weber is now including it for greater complexity.Inc. VAT£120.12 -

The 2014 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru has a tightly wound, stony and rather stoic bouquet at first, one that demands patience. This is not as immediate as its peers. Eventually there are subtle rose petal notes, orange zest and cold granite aromas that unfurl, giving a fleeting glimpse -- a premonition of what is to come. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannin, touches of orange rind infusing the blackberry and blueberry fruit, controlled and quite structured towards the finish that has great nervosité. Alongside the Clos Saint-Jacques this is Bruno Clair's best 2014.Inc. VAT£2,221.44 -
Vinous (94+)
Bright medium red. Pungent lift to the aromas of pomegranate, cranberry and flowers. Fine-grained but tightly wound, even a bit imploded today, conveying a powerful impression of energy and lift. Not an especially fleshy wine but wonderfully precise and complete, with an extremely long finish that shows more saline minerality than primary red fruits. This youthfully taut wine is going to require extended aging.Inc. VAT£1,630.69 -

Bright palish red. Distinctly red aromas of cherry and rose petal. Sappy and perfumed, conveying lovely inner-mouth floral lift and noteworthy finesse. Nicely suave, fine-grained wine with smooth tannins and very good length. These vines are planted on soil rich in white marl, like Clair's Gevrey-Chambertin Cazetiers and Bonne-Mares, and routinely has the highest pH in the cellar (3. 7 in 2014). But this 2014 does not lack for energy.Inc. VAT£1,409.38 -

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St Jacques has a stunning, pure, life-affirming bouquet that is just pure class and delivers exactly what you expect from a vineyard of this caliber (and price!). The palate is medium-bodied with succulent, pure red berry fruit tinged with spice and a hint of Seville orange marmalade. The tannins are filigree and the harmony toward the finish makes you giddy. This is a fabulous Clos Saint Jacques from Bruno Clair that challenges Rousseau as the pick of the five growers this year. Tasted September 2017.Inc. VAT£3,444.07 -
Vinous (91)
Medium red. Sexy aromas of strawberry and earthy underbrush. Juicy and alive in the mouth, with its wild red berry flavors complicated by herbs and pepper. Conveys good energy for its relatively high pH, as well as noteworthy depth and breadth. Round but not at all flat, this Cazetiers finishes with ripe tannins and good thrust.Inc. VAT£1,824.07 -

The 2014 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Petit Chapelle comes from the domaine's smallest holding at 0.25-hectares. It has a pure, tightly wound bouquet with black cherries and strawberry pastilles, floral tones emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. There is good nervosité here, tangible mineralité with impressive persistence on the finish. Very feminine and beguiling, this wine will only require a couple of years in bottle but it has the pedigree and substance to age with style.Inc. VAT£176.39 -
Displaying the vibrant pedigree of the Morey-Saint-Denis appellation in Burgundy, France, the Bruno Clair Morey-Saint-Denis En la Rue de Vergy Blanc 2014 showcases a refined complexity. Produced by esteemed vintner Bruno Clair, it exemplifies the careful vinification combining traditional and modern methods. Harvested manually to maintain the grape's integrity, followed by meticulous sorting, the wine undergoes controlled fermentation, preserving its nuanced characteristics of ripe orchard fruits and floral crescents.
The 2014 vintage is emblematic of Bruno Clair's dedication to producing quintessential Burgundy wines. Its lightly golden hue whispers of a vibrant acidity balanced by a lush richness. Savvy collectors discern the subtle minerality echoing the limestone-clay soils of the vineyard. The 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Combe d'Orveaux was just a little reduced on the nose when we met at the domaine. Like the Noirots, this is holding something back. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit; there is mouth-sapping salinity here and it is delineated with good tension, gently building towards a lightly grippy finish. Once the aromatics awaken, this will be a lovely Chambolle Musigny, even if it is a bit of a broody bugger out of barrel.Inc. VAT£954.72 -
Renowned for both its tradition and innovation, Bruno Clavelier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux 2014 stands as a testament to the grandeur of French winemaking. Produced in the revered vineyards of Gevrey-Chambertin, this Premier Cru wine boasts an illustrious lineage and represents the heart of Burgundy's elegant, yet powerful Pinot Noir. Bruno Clavelier, a fourth-generation vintner, has expertly crafted this 2014 vintage, utilising meticulous, labor-intensive viticulture methods with a deep respect for terroir.
The result is a wine that regales the palate with a complex interplay of bright red fruit, laced with distinct mineral undertones and a hint of spice. An earthy nose with nuances of ripe berries complements this poetic bouquet, promising an alluring sip each time. A statement of its visionary producer and the noble soil of its origin, Bruno Clavelier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux 2014 is a remarkable addition to any discerning wine collection.

The 2014 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées had a more floral bouquet in the making, nicely defined, just a touch of reduction to get through at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black cherry and raspberry fruit on the entry, nicely judged acidity, but just needing a little more precision to come through on the finish. If that transpires, then it will certainly deserve a higher score, but I will be prudent for now.Inc. VAT£95.33 -

Bright red-ruby. Very pure, perfumed aromas and flavors of blackberry, boysenberry, minerals, violet and cocoa powder. Sappy and tightly wound, conveying a powerful impression of vinosity thanks to its pungent minerality. The pH here of 3. 45 is the lowest in the cellar in 2014. Indeed, this wine shows a distinctly cool quality in the context of the vintage, and finishes with excellent chewy length. Tremblay told me that the 2008 version of this wine was paired by a chef with a tuna dish during a trip to Tokyo and that the combination was perfect.Inc. VAT£4,790.29 -

Once again there is a sufficient amount of reduction to warrant a thorough aeration. By contrast there is a lovely vibrancy and freshness in the mouth with plenty of sauvage character present on the velvety and caressing big-bodied and muscular flavors that coat the mouth thanks to the abundance of dry extract that also serves to buffer the very firm tannins on the moderately austere, serious and hugely long finish. As good as this is though it's not clear at this very early juncture whether it will ultimately surpass the Bressandes. Still, both possess outstanding development potential and are of first-rate quality.Inc. VAT£1,796.47 -

Lovely mineral and peony high notes lift dark fruits on the nose. Sappy, dense and penetrating, offering terrific concentration and lift to its flavors of dark berries, licorice and minerals. A superb vintage for this wine, less austere than some previous years. We're coming from an era of cooler soils to warmer soils, noted Labet. Global warming has been very good for Clos-Vougeot. A moderate application of wood frames the overtly floral and attractive fresh aromas of ripe dark cherry, cassis and soft earth hints. A superb vintage for this wine, less austere than some previous years. We're coming from an era of cooler soils to warmer soils, noted Labet. Global warming has been very good for Clos-Vougeot. This thick but energetic wines finishes with suave but serious building tannins and superb length. Incidentally, there was no separate Hommage bottling in 2014.In Bond£653.00 -

A moderate application of wood frames the overtly floral and attractive fresh aromas of ripe dark cherry, cassis and soft earth hints. The sleek and delineated flavors possess a supple mid-palate though the youthfully austere finish tightens up quickly while evidencing a subtle trace of warmth. This moderately structured effort should be approachable after only 6 to 8 years but reward 12 to 15.In Bond£588.00
The 2014 vintage in Burgundy has been rung in with a great deal of local optimism and excitement. After three successive vintages of incredibly low yield and quantities, the growers of the Cote de Nuits were ready to welcome an easy vintage and the chance to make a bit more wine. Easy seemed to be the word on everyone's lips as the growing season presented few climatic challenges and viticultural decisions were by and large straightforward.
Tasting the wines from barrel, we quickly learned that the reds were easy to taste, forward and classical, while the whites were truly remarkable. More than one winemaker came forward to declare that 2014 saw the best white wines in a lifetime. Good levels of acidity kept the bundles of ripe fruit lovely, while the overall character of the vintage was in such good balance that the wines will be approachable from a relatively young age, while the best will age very well indeed.
In general the Cote de Nuits fared a bit better than the Cote de Beaune by virtue of having escaped the savage hail which effected the latter. As much as the hail devastated yields, it fortunately did not impact on quality and many producers managed to make some truly exceptional wines with great forward fruit and firm structure.
Overall this is a vintage with a lot to offer and for Burgundy lovers, it is one to celebrate. Each appellaton was true to style and the winemakers had room to impart their own subtle influence on the finish product. Freshness, flavour and verve are the keyword this year and they come together in bundles.
