The 2015 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru les Champonnets saw 65% whole bunch fruit and 65% new oak, and saw no pigeage in this vintage—just remontage. It has a lovely oyster shell scent complementing the black fruit on the nose, beautifully defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, supple in the mouth with crisp acidity, a perfect combination of power and refinement. What a gorgeous wine from the domaine! Dare I say that it must surely be the best they have produced from this premier cru vineyard.Inc. VAT£1,493.21 -

The 2015 Clos Saint Denis Grand Cru includes 55% whole bunch fruit with 50% new oak. It has a composed bouquet with fine delineation, crushed rose petal and cold wet limestone permeating through the black and red fruit. It conveys the imperious personality I like from my Clos Saint-Denis. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, black fruit stained with orange rind and white pepper, conveying the structure and slight aloofness I appreciate in young Clos Saint-Denis, reassuring that this will age over 15-20 years. This is lip-smackingly delicious and just utterly superb.Inc. VAT£1,620.72 -
Burghound (91-93)
Here too there is prominent wood influence framing the slightly higher-toned and marginally more complex aromas of red currant and blackberry fruits aromas that evidence notes of violet and plum. I very much like the sense of precision to the impressively rich and powerful full-bodied flavors that offer good volume and real drive on the sleekly muscled and firmly structured finish where the supporting tannins are slightly finer.Inc. Bright, dark ruby-red. Very pure, vibrant aromas of kirsch, blackberry, licorice and cocoa powder. Strongly mineral-driven on the palate but not aggressive, with concentrated dark fruit and saline flavors complemented but not overshadowed by the 100% oak. Finishes with fine-grained tannins and lovely floral persistence. Gilles Jayer told me that this climat on thin soil over rock belongs entirely to him and to Domaine Machard de Gramont and really merits premier cru classification. My notes and scores on this cuvée over the past 15 to 20 years suggest that he's right.Inc. VAT£788.00 -

(still in barrel, unracked, with very low sulfur): Aromas of citrus fruits, licorice, menthol and spices. Seriously deep yet delineated village wine with a strong spice character despite the fact that there's no new oak here. Supple, pliant and vibrant but with its brisk fruit a bit suppressed. Finishes with a faint dry edge that may be due to a recent copper treatment. Should make a stunning village wine.Inc. VAT£5,767.94 -

The 2015 Saint-Aubin Clos de la Chatenière 1er Cru has a crisp, earthy, almost zen bouquet that is more like a 2014 than a 2015. I appreciate the terroir expression here - you can sense the wine’s birthplace coming through with aeration. The nuanced palate is very well balanced and precise in style, displaying a fine bead of acidity and a gorgeous, lightly spiced, edgy, sappy finish that urges you back for another sip. Outstanding for the vintage. Highly recommended. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. (DIAM 10 closure)Inc. VAT£203.99 -

Pale yellow. Musky aromas of ripe apple, orange zest and toast; in a slightly oxidative phase. Fat and rich on the palate for a wine with 12.8% alcohol, with peach and apple flavors conveying a low-acid impression. A touch bitter on the finish. These vines on hard calcaire and friable clay produce small yellow grapes that ripen quickly at the end--and especially in 2015, according to Lamy.Inc. VAT£1,845.40 -

Lemon, lime and chalk on the nose, but showing a bit less energy than the regular cuvée and in need of some SO2. Then dense and juicy in the mouth, with the rocky mineral character buffering the wine's natural sweetness; this fruit was picked on August 25 with 14% alcohol, making it the ripest of these 2015s and also the lowest in acidity. Still, the wine's thick flavors of sweet peach and salty minerals deliver remarkable clarity and the finish displays explosive length. Makes a strong statement in favor of extended élevage.Inc. The 2015 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru is excellent, opening in the glass with notes of peony, ripe cherries, briary fruits, potpourri, dark chocolate and coniferous forest floor—more wild in profile than Mugnier's other wines from Chambolle. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, concentrated and deep, with impressive power and a long finish. This is quite a dramatic Bonnes Mares by Mugnier's standards, and the only criticism one could make is that it doesn't possess the ineffable sense of completeness that distinguishes his Amoureuses and Musigny. Discussing his Bonnes Mares, Mugnier notes that half of the vineyard was replanted in 1988 and a quarter in 1980. As these young vines reach age 30, he observes, they have become more Chambolle in character.Inc. VAT£1,990.92 -

We found the wines in 2015 very easy and forward to taste, with as much focus on freshness as concentration, so there wasn’t a complete break from the 2014s in that sense. The hope is that as the wines mature they will continue to show the balance and classicism they displayed from the barrel. Our expectation is that they will do so and the best wines will live for a very long time with a genuinely satisfying pattern of maturation throughout their life.
