(3x75cl) 2015Vinous (90-92)
(this was due to be bottled shortly after my visit): Bright, full yellow. Slightly exotic aromas of lemon, spices and banana complicated by fresh herbs. A distinctly fat, soft style of Chevalier-Montrachet in spite of its lemony fruit. A bit more serious and firm on the back end, finishing with stony and saline nuances. I'm not wild about this.Inc. VAT£1,571.54 -
Vinous (95+)
(13.8%; from 30- and 60+-year-old vines; 3-1/2 barrels made, versus just 1 in 2016): Bright dark red. Sappy, pure aromas of black and red fruits and pungent minerals lifted by a floral topnote. Wonderfully penetrating and smooth, displaying outstanding intensity and class to its fruit and savory mineral flavors. Offers a compelling combination of velour and weightlessness. Thick and seamless but still youthfully tight, this very pure wine finishes with superb subtle rising length. This very cool site can perform splendidly in hot years like 2015; indeed, the estate harvested these vines at the end, on September 11. But winemaker Gublin noted that the first vintage was 1996 and that the estate has never had a negative surprise, in either cold or hot years. I prefer this wine to the Chambertin for its suavity. And here the terroir (Domaine Prieur's vines are in Les Champs Traversins and Les Poulaillères) dominates the vintage character. A wine of great panache.Inc. VAT£652.92 -
(3x75cl) 2015Vinous (92-94)
(13.3% natural alcohol; about to be bottled): Bright, light yellow. Aromas of apricot, yellow grapefruit, apple and iodine. A distinct step up in intensity and cut from the Chevalier-Montrachet; higher-pitched and more energetic in the mouth, with its ripe apricot and citrus fruit flavors buoyed by excellent mineral support. This structured wine will need at least several years in bottle to express itself.Inc. VAT£2,860.82 -

The 2015 Musigny Grand Cru perhaps somewhat predictably has the most sophisticated bouquet amongst Prieur's red wines, with mulberry and blackberry notes infused with cold stone and subtle sous-bois aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe tannin that feel quite bony at the moment, although it will mellow and gain more harmony. There is very fine focus on the finish with attractive salinity on the finish. Afford this a decade in the cellar if you can.Inc. VAT£2,542.30 -

Mugnier's 2015 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale is a terrific success in the 2015 vintage and is strongly reminiscent of the excellent 2005 rendition, opening in the glass with aromas of creamy cassis, ripe cherry, dark chocolate and grilled squab. On the palate, the wine is deep, full-bodied and sapid, with succulent acids, an ample chassis of rich tannins and excellent length. This is one of the rare cases of a great Burgundy from a great domaine that is available in some volume, and no one should fixate on Mugnier's Chambolles at the expense of this lovely Nuits.Inc. Tasted blind, the 2015 Echézeaux Grand Cru also put in a superb performance, bursting from the glass with an expressive bouquet of dark wild berries, cola, orange rind, dried flowers and espresso. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, lavish and dramatic, with a broad attack, a deep and juicy core of fruit, satiny structuring tannins and a long, fragrant and already sapid finish. This is riper still with liqueur-like dark berry fruit aromas that are liberally laced with spice, earth and game nuances. The 2015 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Lavières, located just under Aux Murgers and matured in 20% new oak, has an engaging, floral bouquet with dark berry fruit, just a hint of blood orange and cola emerging with time. The 2015 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts 1er Cru has a wonderful, expressive bouquet, once you get past just a touch of reduction. Black cherries, raspberry and crushed stone all vie for attention, and the oak is very nicely integrated. The palate is sweet and generous on the entry, and super-fine tannins frame a mineral-driven, supremely well focused finish that lingers in the mouth. Top class. The 2015 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots has an exquisite bouquet, extremely pure with scents of redcurrant, blueberry, violets, cola and wet limestone. Like the 2015 Les Beaux Monts, there is wondrous focus and precision here. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin. This is full of energy and tension, with a killer line of acidity and wonderful structure and precision towards the mineral-rich finish. It will require several years in bottle, but it has the substance and complexity to repay patience.Inc. VAT£389.99 -

Moderately saturated dark red. A bit lower-pitched than the Chambolle, with liqueur-like berry aromas complicated by mocha and earth notes. Ripe, plush and sweet, conveying more weight and texture but less energy and definition than the Chambolle, with its red and darker berry flavors complemented by suggestion of coffee. Boasts good material but could use a bit more nuance and grip. The present but initially very supple tannins turn dustier with air. This wine is the lowest in acidity of the 2015s I tasted chez Tardy, at 3.5 grams per liter; most of the other '15s are around 3.8, with the Echézeaux at 3.9.Inc. VAT£104.93 -

Bright, deep red, the darkest of these 2015s. Very pure and ripe but youthfully bound-up nose hints at kirsch, licorice and bitter chocolate. Densely packed and impressively thick, with its flavors of black cherry, licorice and herbs given punch by good peppery verve. This firmly structured Dominode is seriously tight today but the tannins are refined and the long, subtle finish offers captivating violet lift. The most impressive of these 2015s, but lay it down for a while.Inc. VAT£483.30 -

The 2015 Chablis Valmur Grand Cru comes across a little oaky on the nose, but the fruit handles it well. The bouquet is detailed and focused, with hints of dried honey and nutmeg developing in the glass. The palate displays good balance, a fine line of acidity and a smooth, almost creamy texture; hints of almond and white chocolate emerge toward the finish. This feels a little obvious in terms of winemaking at the moment, but I suspect it will evolve into a delicious Valmur. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.Inc. VAT£152.39 -

A very ripe nose features notes of plum, cassis, humus, forest floor and violet. The velvet-textured, concentrated and very serious big-bodied flavors possess seemingly endless reserves of sappy dry extract which helps to buffer the very firm tannic spine on the mocha-infused finish. Densely packed and impressively thick, with its flavors of black cherry, licorice and herbs given punch by good peppery verve. This firmly structured Dominode is seriously tight today but the tannins are refined and the long, subtle finish offers captivating violet lift. The most impressive of these 2015s, but lay it down for a while. In Bond£383.51 -
(1x300cl) 2015Jancis Robinson (18.5)
Dark crimson. Dense and very deep, cool start but clearly this has grand cru character. Some spiciness. Some majesty. Great tension and raciness. Not as concentrated as some but made with real sensitivity. In Bond£3,437.11 -

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. In Bond£124.00 -
(3x75cl) 2015Wine Advocate (96-98)
The 2015 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is a class act in the making, perhaps one of the finest barrel samples that I have tasted from Drouhin. This gem has a gorgeous and extraordinarily pure bouquet with crushed strawberry, pomegranate and overripe orange scents that are exquisite and beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with super fine, almost filigree tannin that seem to caress the senses. It constitutes the most sophisticated of Drouhin's 2015s with ineffable finesse on the finish that lingers so long in the mouth. This is simply a brilliant wine.In Bond£1,484.00 -

This beautifully complex effort is less austere than it usually is at this point though the structure makes it pointedly clear that this is going to age for a very long time.In Bond£1,021.00
We found the wines in 2015 very easy and forward to taste, with as much focus on freshness as concentration, so there wasn’t a complete break from the 2014s in that sense. The hope is that as the wines mature they will continue to show the balance and classicism they displayed from the barrel. Our expectation is that they will do so and the best wines will live for a very long time with a genuinely satisfying pattern of maturation throughout their life.
