Healthy dark red with ruby highlights. Lovely floral, spicy high tones to the aromas of dark cherry and raspberry. In a distinctly ripe style for this bottling, offering sweet, plush flavors of black raspberry, licorice, flowers, crushed rock and bitter chocolate. Still some new oak to be absorbed but this large-scaled Clos Vougeot has the stuffing to support it. Finishes ripely tannic and very long, with palate-saturating richness and captivating savory minerality. The first wine of my morning vertical tasting with the Mugneret sisters and a true breakfast of champions. (13.3% alcohol; 3.5 pH; harvested on September 5; 41 hectoliters per hectare produced; aged in 70% new oak)Inc. VAT£11,764.84 -

Very pure but subtle and shy on the nose, exuding scents of blackberry, dark cherry, violet and dark chocolate accented by orange zest. Offers an exhilarating balance of almost chocolatey sweetness and penetrating acidity. Finishes very long and primary, even a bit inky, with suave tannins and firm acidity. Bright, dark red. Subtly complex aromas of raspberry, blueberry, spices, minerals and soil. Silky, seamless and concentrated, with its atypical richness leavened by harmonious balancing acidity and a musky saline element. This terrific Feusselottes shows outstanding sappy energy and a long finish featuring suave tannins, a note of red licorice and excellent rising length. This should age slowly and gracefully. Dark medium red. Ineffable nose combines tight, wild red berries, musky animal nuances and a hint of torrefaction, enlivened by hint notes of wild mint and white pepper. Densely packed and chewy; a distinctly masculine wine with outstanding intensity and underlying structure. And yet the texture is silky too. This utterly palate-saturating wine finishes with explosive rising notes of red berries, game, licorice, pepper, mint and saline minerality and great perfumed persistence. The crop level from these old vines and small berries was between 30 and 35 hectoliters per hectare, as Bernstein routinely does multiple green harvests here to ensure that the clusters finish at roughly the same level of potential alcohol. Incidentally, Bernstein attempted to ensure freshness in his 2015s by using 80% whole clusters to balance the ripeness of the fruit.Inc. VAT£3,049.56 -

Bright, dark red; a bit more saturated than the Mazis. Knockout, slightly liqueur-like aromas and flavors of dark raspberry, boysenberry, rose petal, licorice and mint, complicated by musky soil tones. Pure silk on the palate but with its uncanny thickness of texture leavened by energy. This wonderfully tactile, savory wine saturates every square millimeter of the palate and finishes with powerful medicinal reserve and incredible building length. And yet there's no impression of weightiness here. This could be enjoyed right now with the right piece of meat, but I'd rather lay it down for eight or ten years.Inc. VAT£2,390.42 -

Moderately saturated bright red. Subtler on the nose than the Champeaux, showing a penetrating perfume to the aromas of raspberry liqueur and flowers. Plush, sweet and stuffed with red berries, spices and dried flowers, offering outstanding volume while maintaining its shape and avoiding any impression of heaviness. Quite spherical in the middle palate, then suave on the back end, finishing with late-arriving fine-grained tannins and resounding length. (just one new barrel out of seven): Dark red with ruby tones. Essence-of-Burgundy perfume of raspberry, white pepper, cardamom, Cuban tobacco, coffee and underbrush. Outrageously dense and intense on entry, then brilliantly delineated, penetrating and sweet in the middle palate, with its tangy red berry and earth flavors enlivened by building notes of menthol, rose petal and Oriental spices. Dark red with ruby tones. Deeper, darker and earthier than the Clos de Bèze, conveying aromas of dark raspberry, spices and rare steak but less of the high-pitched mineral and floral notes of its sibling. Large-scaled, brooding and backward, but still more red fruits than black in style, with its density and power leavened by electric acidity. Combines incredible thickness and volume without a light touch, thanks to penetrating soil-driven minerality. Finishes with an uncanny impression of solidity but no excess weight. Burghound (89-92)
There is just enough reduction present to blur the distinctions between the various fruit and floral elements. The seductive yet reasonably well-delineated medium-bodied flavors possess a really lovely mouth feel thanks primarily to the abundant level of dry extract that coats the palate on the lightly mineral and citrus-tinged finish. This is one of those wines that is so exuberantly delicious that it will be hard to resist young. In Bond£865.00 -

Tasted blind, this was also a very strong showing for Pillot's 2015 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets. Aromas of lemon oil, mandarin and nutmeg mingle with hints of petrol and crushed chalk in a complex bouquet, introducing a medium-bodied, tense and stony wine with racy acids and a mouthwatering, unmistakably stony finish. In Bond£397.00 -

With its uncanny energy and complexity and its unflagging finishing thickness, this noble, electric wine has all the elements for greatness. (And I could drink it today for its perfect balance and digestibility!)In Bond£4,445.00 -

This brilliant Chambertin is built for a very long life in bottle. In Bond£4,867.00 -

A ripe and fresh but markedly more restrained nose speaks of liqueur-like red cherry aromas that display added breadth in the form of anise, lavender and rose petal. The middle weight flavors possess a caressing mouth feel before terminating in a lacy, detailed and highly complex finale. The significant amount of 1er juice is evident and this is lovely and very Chambolle-esque in character. In Bond£648.00 -

Full dark red. Pungent scents of raspberry, crushed rock and rose petal. At once silky, sappy and savory, conveying a captivating light touch and terrific inner-mouth tension to its sharply delineated red raspberry, pomegranate and crushed-rock flavors. Finishes with compelling mounting perfume and saliva-inducing briskness. Not at all a fleshpot for the vintage, this classy Charmes-Chambertin struck me as rather Chambolle-like.In Bond£547.00 -

The 2015 Mazoyères-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has the most vivacious and intense bouquet amongst Christophe's 2015s, billowing red and dark cherries, creme de cassis, crushed violets and blood orange. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and extremely well-judged acidity. As such, there is outstanding focus here and a sense of precision running all the way through to the finish. This is a seriously fine Mazoyères-Chambertin that must rank as one of the best this domaine has produced. In Bond£1,027.00 -

We found the wines in 2015 very easy and forward to taste, with as much focus on freshness as concentration, so there wasn’t a complete break from the 2014s in that sense. The hope is that as the wines mature they will continue to show the balance and classicism they displayed from the barrel. Our expectation is that they will do so and the best wines will live for a very long time with a genuinely satisfying pattern of maturation throughout their life.
