  • Bellene Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Suchots 2015 (6x75cl)

    Burghound (91)

Like the Grèves, there is just enough volatile acidity to warrant mentioning on the ultra-spicy nose of various dark berries, plum and pretty floral notes. The suave, round and exceptionally rich medium weight plus flavors are very Vosne in character before culminating in a palate coating, robust and well-balanced finish. This is very clearly built-to-age and as I have mentioned in several of the above reviews, my only concern revolves around the VA. This is to say that at present it's no more than a nit but it's impossible to say how it will progress, if at all, with time in bottle. As such my score offers the benefit of the doubt that the VA will remain a background element.
  • Benjamin Leroux Chambertin Grand Cru 2015 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (93-96)

(50% new oak; vinified with two-thirds whole clusters): Healthy medium red. Knockout nose combines musky raspberry and complex soil tones. Began a bit monolithic on the palate, but aeration brought an increasingly silky texture and a captivating blend of raspberry and crushed rock lifted by spices. Still youthfully tight, this rather saline Chambertin is just beginning to express itself. Finishes with serious tannins and outstanding length. One can feel the power here, but this very tactile wine is quite unevolved. The finish offers terrific definition and lift.
  • Benjamin Leroux Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru 2015 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (96)

The 2015 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru has an immediately seductive, extremely pure bouquet of bright red fruit, strawberry and cranberry; hints of blueberry surface with aeration. The oak is very well integrated, and with continued aeration in the glass, the raspberry component becomes more expressive. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit encased by grippy, slightly firm tannins. This is a very serious Grand Cru, extraordinarily focused and full of tension; the mouth still tingles 60 seconds after it has exited. A consummate expression of a great Burgundy vintage. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

  • Bernard Dugat-Py Bourgogne Cuvee Halinard Rouge 2015 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (88+)

I seldom taste the regional appellations on my visits to the Domaine Dugat-Py, so when I saw the 2015 Bourgogne Cuvée Halinard on a Côte d'Or wine list, I made a point of ordering it. This is a lovely wine, wafting from the glass with a classy bouquet of red cherries, cassis, grilled meat and rich soil, subtly framed by a judicious touch of recently used oak. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with a deep core of ripe but savory fruit, fine-grained structuring tannins and a long, sapid finish, with juicy balancing acids. The substance that is this domaine's calling card is certainly present, and it will undoubtedly improve with five to ten years of bottle age—at maturity, I suspect it will embarrass many village wines. Interestingly, it's both a touch more savory and a touch more structured than the lovely 2015 Bourgogne Rouge from Domaine Claude Dugat that I tasted a few days before.

    Wine Advocate (94)

The 2015 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot is a stunning success, offering up a deep and already complex bouquet of pear, pastry cream, wheat toast, iodine, lemon oil and hazelnut. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, authoritative and multidimensional, with wonderful depth and dimension and considerable extract, underpinned by succulent acids, its finish long and mineral. This is an imposing Morgeot that captures the power while avoiding the corpulence of which this climat is capable.

Alluring nose combines lemon, lime, crushed rock and a sexy leesy element. Dense and thick but with terrific mineral spine and energy to its flavors of citrus fruits and white flowers. Great unmistakable Burgundy funk here. Moreau told me that this wine is fairly low in acidity but its saline minerality nonetheless gives it a penetrating quality. Mounts slowly and stains the palate on the very long aftertaste. Superb wild, musky wine with unexpected precision. Bellene Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Chaignots 2015 is indeed a commendable testament to old world winemaking excellence, underpinning Maison Roche de Bellene's reputation for producing meticulously crafted, terroir-driven wines. Experience this refined, concentrated and generously flavoured masterpiece.

Vinous (90)

(bottled in February of 2017; production here was no higher than in 2016 owing to drought in '15): Dark red-ruby. Sweet black cherry and spices on the nose and palate. Lovely juicy, easygoing wine with good depth of texture--and nothing rustic about it. Finishes with serious but smooth tannins and noteworthy length. I like the combination of strong phenolic material and energy. Berthaut told me that she has no idea how the '15s will age, pointing out that her first vintage was 2013.

We found the wines in 2015 very easy and forward to taste, with as much focus on freshness as concentration, so there wasn’t a complete break from the 2014s in that sense. The hope is that as the wines mature they will continue to show the balance and classicism they displayed from the barrel. Our expectation is that they will do so and the best wines will live for a very long time with a genuinely satisfying pattern of maturation throughout their life.
