(3x150cl) 2018Vinous (92)
The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru has an open, expressive bouquet of cranberry, wild strawberry and rose petal aromas, perhaps not quite as precise as the nascent 2019. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, slightly tarry black fruit and quite a persistent residue of cracked black pepper.Inc. VAT£1,436.44 -
Vinous (92-94)
Matured in 50% new oak, the 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru has a complex bouquet of red currant, crushed strawberry, licorice and light floral aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, and lightly spiced with touches of cracked black pepper toward the grainy finish. More masculine than other Vosne cuvées, it will require 4–5 years to show its best.Inc. VAT£191.20 -

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru is very expressive on the nose with raspberry, briary and a touch of crushed stone, hints of orange pith. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, quite strict towards the finish but with commendable length. Fine, but this will need 4-6 years in bottle.Inc. VAT£334.67 -

The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru seems a little oaky on the nose, which is occluding the terroir compared to others tasted on my travels. The palate is medium-bodied with strict tannins, black rather than red fruit with a slightly toasty finish. This feels a bit short overall.Inc. VAT£154.79 -

Vinous (92)
(this wine was bottled in August of 2017): Good dark red with ruby tones. Very ripe aromas of dark raspberry, licorice pastille and cinnamon, plus a sexy suggestion of torrefaction. Then fresher in the mouth than the nose suggests, displaying a lovely combination of sweet, seamless red berry fruit and vibrant acidity. Velvety and a bit high-toned in the middle palate, but the finish leaves the salivary glands humming. Cheurlin noted that his 2015s were bottled unfined and unfiltered, with volatile acidity levels around 0.6 to 0.65 grams per liter, which contributes to their early aromatic appeal.Inc. (3x75cl) 2017Vinous (94)
The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits Monts 1er Cru has a lovely, very well-defined bouquet of ebullient red cherries, crushed strawberry and rose petal aromas. The palate is medium-bodied and quite savory, with lithe tannins, well-judged acidity and hints of dried blood and spicebox toward the finish, which lingers nicely. Excellent. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.Inc. VAT£890.42 -

5 Star Wine. One of the deeper purple colours. There is a significant weight of fruit, and it is clean enough. This is in the very opulent super-ripe fruit whole bunch style. Still needs time for the future path to become clear. A little dryness at the back and some pepper with blood orange notes in the mix. Very long, with some dark pepper notes. Drink from 2033.Inc. The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Les Petit Monts 1er Cru has a vibrant nose despite just a touch of red cherry and cranberry fruit, a subtle earthiness that unfolds with each swirl of the glass. The 2016 Vosne-Romanée Village was not really touched by the frost, according to winemaker Maxime Chuerlin. The bouquet is well defined with brambly red fruit, touches of tobacco and smoke in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, fine purity and fine structure on the finish. I like the personality of this Vosne-Romanée. It just seems to sing.Inc. VAT£147.59 -

There is just enough reduction present to push the underlying fruit to the background but not so much as to mask the pretty spice wisps. This is an excellent Vosne villages that is worth your interest.Inc. VAT£418.76 -

Vinous (94+)
Excellent red-ruby color. Multifaceted nose hints at dried rose, raspberry, cherry, white pepper and minerals. Dense and thick in the mouth; conveys an impression of lushness in spite of its strong backbone and firm acidity. Finishes with terrific grip and length, with tannins buffered by fruit. This will develop in bottle for many years but has the early balance to give pleasure now.Inc. VAT£2,068.92 -

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-93)
(the two components had already been blended) Good deep red. Spicy aromas of strawberry, raspberry and rose petal. Intensely flavored, sharply delineated and seriously structured; this has terrific backbone for the year. A solid, concentrated wine with a firm tannic spine.Inc. VAT£16,128.72 -
Vinous (93)
Good deep red. Very sexy, soil-driven scents of plum, mocha, redcurrant, graphite and spices. Showing plenty of truffley underbrush but also superb inner-mouth energy and spice character to its plum and dark berry fruit. In a distinctly dark, earthy, almost austere style, finishing with dusty, fine, integrated tannins, hints of mint and plum, and terrific persistence. This wine is near its peak but there's still more to come.Inc. VAT£2,175.72 -

Roumier vinifies separately and later assembles the fruits of white chalk and red (iron-rich) parcels that inform his 2005 Bonnes Mares. At the time of my visit he had retained one pure barrel of each component as an investigation into terroir and the results were as fascinating as the blended wine is fascinatingly and profoundly beautiful. The ferrous lot (55% of the final assemblage) displays ripe blackberry and raspberry berries, along with (red soil-born) pungent smokiness, Chartreuse-like herbal and floral essences. A liqueur-like presentation of black fruits temporarily overshadows the mysterious (white rock-born) meld of chalky minerality and beef marrow that wells up gradually on a creamy palate with tannins of utmost refinement. The tension and energy are riveting – lending the wine a dynamic, fleet-of-foot impression for all of its manifestly huge extract – with incisive brightness of palate-staining fruit and vibrant minerality leading to a finish of sensational clarity and length. Even here, by the way, Roumier employs only around 40% new wood.Inc. VAT£3,028.51 -

Then came the 2009 Bonnes-Mares. What a wine! While the Musigny showed more of a red fruit profile, the Bonnes-Mares was quite a bit darker. It also had a lot more underlying structure. With time in the glass, hints of menthol, tar and dried roses added complexity. Both wines took us on a journey. Ultimately, though, the Musigny gave up its charms easier, while the Bonnes-Mares continued to open up over several hours, seemingly with something new to say with each taste. It was flat-out monumental. The stuff dreams are made of.Inc. VAT£2,689.32
