Decanter (96)
Ghislaine Barthod's two parcels of Charmes are both in the more southerly part of the premier cru and can make one of the more reticent wines in her line up. That's far from the case here though, as this is all about rose petal and summer berry aromas with bright, vivacious acidity, subtle 30% new oak integration and a sweet, lingering finish.Inc. VAT£3,862.01 -
Wine Advocate (93-95+)
One of the more dramatic, gourmand cuvées in the range is the 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes, a stunning wine that bursts with aromas of mulberries, raspberries, violets and rose petals, complemented by hints of loamy soil and baking chocolate. Full-bodied, sumptuous and enveloping, its rich, powdery tannins are entirely cloaked in an ample core of ripe but succulent fruit. I found it hard to resist.Inc. VAT£2,013.12 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)
A light ruby purple. The bouquet is immediate and very seductive, doing its Charmes thing. Roses and red fruit, especially strawberry. Fills the mouth seductively, continuing through to a fine finish, not too much acidity, refined tannins, very agreeable. And excellent persistence. Drink from 2029-2038. Tasted: November 2023.Inc. VAT£2,084.00 -
Vinous (90-92)
The Chambolle-Musigny Les Chatelots is big, rich and explosive. Here the fruit is dark in tone, with sweet, balsamic inflected notes that add complexity. The tannins are big and imposing, but also very nicely integrated. With time in the glass, the Chatelots becomes a bit more finessed, but never loses its essential intensity.Inc. VAT£1,788.92 -
Wine Advocate (90-92)
The 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru les Châtelots has an open, articulate nose that really expresses its terroir -- such fine mineralité here. The palate is strict and linear with dark berry/blackcurrant fruit, plenty of freshness and with a steely, precise finish that perhaps just needs a little more persistence. That may come by the time it is in bottle, but for now, it is the finesse that comes through in barrel.Inc. VAT£1,041.12 -
Wine Advocate (92-94)
Opening in the glass with bright aromas of red berry fruit and orange rind, as well as bass notes of licorice and spices, the 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Chatelots is medium to full-bodied, layered and sumptuously textural, with a pure core of fruit, lively acids and a nicely defined finish.Inc. VAT£1,344.80 -
Vinous (91-93)
There are also just two barrels of the 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Chatelots 1er Cru this year, though this cuvée works better than the Aux Combettes at the moment. There is more fruit concentration on the nose with attractive blackcurrant, wild strawberry and briary scents. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe black cherry and strawberry fruit, fine mineralité and quite a deep, lightly grippy finish. Very fine.Inc. VAT£949.94 -
Burghound (90-92)
Exuberantly fresh aromas of essence of various red berries with a broader array of spice notes leads to detailed, even chiseled, lighter weight flavors that exude both energy and minerality on the understated, firm and moderately austere finale.Inc. VAT£904.82 -
Burghound (90-93)
This is also aromatically really fresh with its blend of dark raspberry, violet and a crushed fennel aromas. The mouthfeel of the slightly richer flavors is also caressing but here there is a subtle minerality on the lacy, balanced and youthfully austere finale that delivers slightly better persistence. Textbook Chatelots.Inc. VAT£920.00 -
Vinous (91+)
Dark red. Deep, ripe aromas of briary black raspberry, dark chocolate and minerals. Very intensely flavored and solidly structured; rather cool dark berry flavors complicated by herbal, briary and menthol hints. Not yet sweet but thick with extract. Rigorous, strong wine, finishing with big but very fine tannins. Offers impressive potential.Inc. VAT£4,134.41 -
(12x75cl) 2004Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-92)
Very good deep, bright red. Highly aromatic if slightly reduced nose offers crushed fresh raspberry, pepper, herbs, minerals and a hint of oak. Very rich, peppery and dry on the palate, with noteworthy energy and elegance. The finish begins rather austere but then broadens out impressively. The most tannic of these 2004s; in comparison with this, the Veroilles seems silkier.Inc. VAT£2,564.98 -
Vinous (94)
The 2008 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras is a prototypical wine for the year. Cool, inward and tense, it shows superb precision in its dark fruit, spices, menthol and tar. The wine literally wraps around the palate with serious intensity and a beguiling personality that is impossible to resist. The finish is pointed and flat-out beautiful.Inc. VAT£264.12 -
(12x75cl) 2009Vinous (94)
The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras is loaded with class and energy. There is tremendous energy in the glass as layers of dark cherries, mint, graphite, crushed rocks, spices and licorice gain volume and breath through the mid-palate and finish. I very much like the intensity and focus here. The Cras is going to need at least another few years in bottle, but it is shaping up to be truly stellar.Inc. VAT£5,107.44 -

(from a yield of about 28 hectoliters per hectare, according to Ghislaine Barthod): Good bright, full red. Very closed yet delicate nose offers scents of black cherry, licorice, fresh herbs and minerals. Soil-driven, saline and sweet, with powerful minerality accentuating the wine's superb concentration. Wonderfully tactile yet light on its feet, this taut, vibrant wine saturates the entire mouth and stains the front teeth. As with Barthod's other 2010s, the tannins are extremely refined. Barthod notes that the 1999 version of this wine is still young, and she believes that this 2010 will take even longer to reach full maturity.Inc. VAT£4,943.04 -

Medium red. Sexy oak spices complement aromas of strawberry, rose petal, licorice and earth. Large-scaled, concentrated, creamy and rich; wonderfully generous and layered for the vintage, with its red fruit and spice flavors conveying captivating sweetness. This very young wine finishes with big, ripe tannins and terrific saline persistence. Some day this will be magnificent at the dinner table. It's hard to believe that this fruit was picked with potential alcohol of just 12.3%.Inc. VAT£1,684.32 -
Decanter (95)
Another well sited premier cru, at the same altitude as Bonnes Mares, Ghislaine Barthod's parcel runs to 0.82ha and is one of the bigger cuvées in her cellar. There's a cooling effect from the combe above the village here, producing a wine that's savoury, focussed and taut with a chalky mineral core. It’s unusually fresh for a 2017.Inc. VAT£241.32 -
Wine Advocate (94-96)
The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras may well prove to be the highpoint of a magical portfolio chez Barthod, and it will be worth a special effort to seek out. Unwinding in the glass with scents of dark berries, raspberries, exotic spices, sweet soil tones and peonies, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and velvety, with a textural attack that segues into a deep and layered mid-palate, underpinned by bright acids and ripe tannins, before concluding with a long, perfumed and exquisitely mineral finish.Inc. VAT£330.12 -
Wine Advocate (96)
The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras is similarly compelling, soaring from the glass with aromas of red berries, exotic spices, orange rind, musk and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and tightly wound, with a deep and vibrant core of fruit that's framed by fine, powdery tannins, it concludes with a long, penetrating and intensely mineral finish. This is a magical Chambolle-Musigny worth a special effort to seek out.Inc. VAT£1,740.72 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)
A good even density of crimson. The nose suggests fair density but does not want to give detail. Solid and really quite fine on the palate, the most classical structure of all the cuvees, the wine that suggests it will need longest to come round. Racy finish, with fruit, tannins and acidity all in good balance. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: November 2022.Inc. VAT£224.93 -

Vinous (94-96)
The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru bides its time unfolding in the glass, eventually revealing earthy red fruit, clove and hints of bergamot. This is very complex, but it is not a flashy Chambolle. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip on the entry. It has crisp acidity and is nicely structured with one of the most sapid finishes from the Domaine. This is one of their finest offerings in this vintage.Inc. VAT£2,084.00 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (94-96)
The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru is endowed with the most fruit concentration amongst the domaine's Premier Crus. Mulberry, raspberry, damp earth and dark chocolate hints develop in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, with an assertive grip on the entry. The fine tannins here give this Les Cras wonderful symmetry and poise. It's nimble, complete and delicious toward the saline finish. This Chambolle is a cut above.Inc. VAT£1,308.80 -
Vinous (93+)
Subdued aromas of plum, chocolate, violet and crushed rock, with a slightly liqueur-like quality. Dense, sappy, superconcentrated and sweet; a remarkably solid wine with terrific chewy depth. The finish stains the palate with powerful tannins and minerality, but the fruit and tannins will need at a good 10 years to come into harmony. There were just four barrels of this juice, as opposed to a typical five and a half, due to the tiny, thick-skinned grapes. It should be at least a misdemeanor to open this wine anytime soon.Inc. VAT£3,427.61 -
(12x75cl) 2009Vinous (94)
Barthod's 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées is utterly impeccable from start to finish. It possesses tons of inner sweetness in a finessed, gracious style that is immensely appealing. A last burst of exotic red fruit frames the finish. The Fuées is flat-out striking.Inc. VAT£3,752.81 -
Vinous (93-95)
The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny Les Gruenchers 1er Cru has a well-defined nose, perhaps one of the most mineral driven amongst Ghislaine-Barthod's range. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins, vivacious and focused with lively red fruit and an exuberant finish that is very convincing. This Gruenchers transcends the growing season. Sublime.Inc. VAT£762.80 -
Vinous (92-94)
The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Gruenchers 1er Cru has a spicy bouquet that takes time to cohere in the glass. Dark cherries, pain d'épice and dried flowers unfold in the glass. The palate is perhaps the most marine-influenced of the cuvées. Rather foursquare perhaps: it's tightly wound and slightly conservative towards the finish, yet feels long in the mouth. Very fine…but you must be patient.Inc. VAT£1,452.80 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)
Mid purple, currently showing the oak a little more than some. Then more fruit fragrance develops, fine-boned on the palate, with additional energy further back. Something of a sleeper, heading in the right direction. Drink from 2032-2037. Tasted Nov 2024.Inc. VAT£1,355.60
