Vinous (88-90)
The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Songes Vieilles Vignes comes from the north of the village. I feel that the whole bunches (60%) comes across a little too strong on the nose, consequently it masks some of the terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, quite fresh and saline, a healthy dash of white pepper towards the understated finish. The 2021 Bourgogne Pinot Noir comes from two vineyards in Gevrey and is completely de-stemmed. It has a light and slightly earthy nose that just needs a little more clarity. The 2015 Clos Saint Denis Grand Cru includes 55% whole bunch fruit with 50% new oak. It has a composed bouquet with fine delineation, crushed rose petal and cold wet limestone permeating through the black and red fruit. It conveys the imperious personality I like from my Clos Saint-Denis. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, black fruit stained with orange rind and white pepper, conveying the structure and slight aloofness I appreciate in young Clos Saint-Denis, reassuring that this will age over 15-20 years. The 2017 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru matures in 50% new oak with 60% whole bunches from 45-year old vines that are Cordon pruned, although they are introducing some Guyot simple. It has a precocious bouquet with macerated dark cherries, blackcurrant and spicebox. The palate is dense and rather introverted. Perhaps here I would have liked just a little more delineation for it seems rather blocky and heavy on the finish. Afford this 5 to 7 years in bottle - hopefully it will lighten up.Inc. VAT£237.72 -

The 2018 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru is arresting on the nose, showing a touch of brief reduction before black and red fruit soar from the glass. There seems to be some stem addition here lending an attractive pepperiness, but it is more opaque and more vivid than the 2018 Clos de Tart. The palate is medium-bodied with distinctive whole bunch acting as the guiding hand. Maybe too much? Yet it is very fresh and vibrant with a wonderful arching structure on the finish. The 2021 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru shows some clever whole bunch addition, combining with the mainly red fruit and not obscuring the terroir expression. Classic Pinot Noir/Clos Saint-Denis. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, clean and fresh, marine influence blackberry and raspberry with a liberal sprinkling of sea salt on the sapid finish. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, masculine and upright with decent structure, "correct" on the finish but precise and detailed. This shows what this vineyard can do in the right hands.Inc. The 2014 Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru les Millandes was picked a little earlier just to keep the acidity from the berries that were affected by millerandage. It has a well defined bouquet with light gravel scents infusing the blackberry and briary fruit. This is very correct but also very composed. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly earthy red berry fruit. There is still some oak to be subsumed, but I think it was a right decision to pick early as the acidity maintains sufficient tension on the slightly foursquare finish.Inc. VAT£1,312.60 -

Here too there is prominent wood influence framing the slightly higher-toned and marginally more complex aromas of red currant and blackberry fruits aromas that evidence notes of violet and plum. I very much like the sense of precision to the impressively rich and powerful full-bodied flavors that offer good volume and real drive on the sleekly muscled and firmly structured finish where the supporting tannins are slightly finer.Inc. It is beautifully defined and very focused. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, slightly grainy tannin. There is plenty of smoke-tinged, almost flinty black and red fruit with a very harmonious, quite structured finish that feels persistence and satisfying. It has a well-defined bouquet, the stemmy element not quite as pronounced as on the Gevrey Champonnet and more integrated with the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, and generous peppery black fruit laced with cedar and white pepper. The grippy finish needs time to abrade its edges. Containing 100% whole bunch, it has an intense bouquet of pine-needle-infused red and black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, and a little tarry toward the finish. Here the nose is dominated by smoky reduction and only hints of citrus rind are perceptible so give this some air first. The sleek, precise and intense middle weight flavors brim with minerality that adds a sense of lift to the highly refreshing, very dry and notably more complex finale.
