(1x75cl) 2017Vinous (90-92)
The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis Trilogie, which includes 25% whole bunch fruit from vines that tend to suffer millerandage, offers vivacious dark cherry and raspberry coulis scents on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, a fine bead of acidity, good focus and a mineral-infused finish that delivers a pleasant sour edginess. Excellent.Inc. VAT£99.20 -
(1x75cl) 2019Vinous (90-92)
The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis "Trilogie" comes from three lieux-dits: Chenevery (50%), Clos Salon (15%) and Les Porroux (35%). It has a crisp, quite airy, open bouquet with vibrant black cherry and briary aromas, fine definition with a touch of graphite in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit. The one-third whole bunches is nicely integrated and lending black pepper notes on the lively finish. Recommended.Inc. VAT£123.86 -
(6x75cl) 2020Wine Advocate (90-92)
Offering up aromas of cassis, red berries, warm spices and loamy soil, the 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis Trilogie is medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with a deep and youthfully tightly wound core of fruit that's framed by lively acids and powdery tannins. This is likely to emerge as Lignier's finest communal-level bottling this year, but it will also require the most patience.Inc. VAT£482.44 -

Vinous (93-95)
The 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, matured in 50% new oak, has a precocious bouquet with layers of opulent blackberry, cassis and redcurrant fruit, crushed violets bursting from the glass. This does not hold back. The palate is sweet and velvety smooth on the entry, fine tannins that frame the intense black cherry and cassis fruit with a judicious touch of spice towards the finish. Afford this 5-7 years in the cellar to tame its precocity.Inc. VAT£1,299.96 -
(3x75cl) 2021Vinous - Neal Martin (92)
The 2021 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is clearly darker in colour than its peers. It offers more fruit concentration and opulence on the nose—a rare facet in this growing season—with inky purple fruit and a floral component that emerges with time. The palate is sweeter and more fruit driven than its peers, with blackberry, blueberry and a light cassis note, though it does not have the complexity or terroir expression of its peers. It feels as if it is trying too hard. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.Inc. VAT£1,367.42 -
Vinous (93-95)
The 2022 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru comprises two barrels, one new and one a year old. It has quite a backward nose, more tertiary in style, quite flinty, in fact. Blind, I would not guess this to be from this vineyard at all. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe black cherry and boysenberry fruit, fine mineralité and backbone. This is much more open, fanning out with style towards the finish that has just the right amount of edge. It's very fine but will require bottle age to unlock the aromatics.Inc. VAT£1,174.00 -
Burghound (92-94)
(from a .123 ha parcel of 80+ year old vines situated mostly in terres blanches; about 600 bottles are produced each year). A discreet application of oak frames the overtly spice aromas of poached plum, dark cherry and violet. The rich, solidly concentrated and weighty larger-bodied flavors are at once supple yet powerful with a taut muscularity, all wrapped in a wonderfully persistent and complex finale where the only nit is a touch of warmth. In the context of the 2023 vintage, this is a big wine and one that will need at least moderate patience.Inc. VAT£1,241.20 -

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes has a delightful, crisp, delineated, beautifully poised bouquet with fine mineralité and tension. This is a top notch nose. The palate is seamless on the entry, silky smooth and utterly seductive, the acidity well judged. There remains some new oak to be absorbed, but there is plenty of fruit to absorb that with 4-5 years in bottle. This is a top notch vin de garde Chambolle-Musignny and there is not a great number of those this vintage. Tasted September 2016.Inc. VAT£148.13 -
Wine Advocate (90-92)
The 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1Er Cru les Charmes comes from vines around 60-years-old. I like the volume and purity here -- just joyful black cherry and cassis fruit with an underlying mineralité that comes through more and more with time. The palate is crisp and slightly chalky in texture, grippy in the mouth, much more masculine that the nose suggests with firm structure imparting linearity towards the lightly peppered finish. This is an excellent Chambolle Charmes that will drink well over the next 8-15 years.Inc. VAT£148.13 -

Cropped at a modest 32 hectoliters per hectare, the 2015 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes unfurls in the glass with an enticing bouquet of ripe cherries, dark chocolate, spices and espresso roast. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and layered, with a textural attack, excellent depth and dimension at the core and velvety structuring tannins. It's a real success in the gourmand style of the vintage.Inc. VAT£148.13 -

The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru has an intense bouquet with layers of red fruit, blood orange, brown spices and even a touch of lemongrass (something more normally found on whites, although it does work here). The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins that impart a fleshy mouthfeel. This feels very harmonious and, although there is more new oak to be assimilated, ultimately I feel this will turn into a very serious, more modern style Chambolle-Musigny. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.Inc. VAT£674.00 -
Vinous (94)
The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru has a complex bouquet of red currant, cranberry, leather and light minty aromas that gather pace in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fresh line of acidity and superb _ mineralité_ on the finish. This comes highly recommended.Inc. VAT£108.53 -

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru has a crisp, delineated bouquet of mineral-rich blackberry and boysenberry fruit displaying wonderful tension and focus. The palate is tensile right from the start, offering succulent black fruit, a silky-smooth texture and an intense, blood-orange-infused finish. Plenty of energy here. This should turn into a superb Chambolle-Musigny.Inc. VAT£270.80 -

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru is very pure on the nose, quite intense like the Vieilles Vignes with verging on ostentatious black cherry and cassis fruit, very floral and not shy in the slightest. The palate restores order with some gorgeous red berry fruit, slightly gourmand in style, almost gamey towards the finish that feels very long. Succulent ‘n sexy.Inc. VAT£430.92 -

Vinous (91-93)
The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru comes from two barrels and is aged in 25% new oak. This is much more complex and nuanced on the nose than the Vieilles Vignes: very focused with ebullient red fruit laced with violet. The palate is medium-bodied with good density on the entry. It's quite structured for a Chambolle with some firm tannins on the finish, but sufficient fruit keeps it balanced and poised.Inc. VAT£576.80 -
Burghound (90-92)
(from a .63 ha parcel). Liqueur-like aromas include those of black cherry, poached plum and a spicy top note. The sleek, seductive and supple flavors are not especially dense while exuding a subtle minerality that adds a sense of lift to the balanced, dusty and impressively long finale that is presently youthfully austere. This is understated and really quite good.Inc. VAT£576.80 -

Wine Advocate (90-93)
The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras was less put together when I tasted it, offering up aromas of juicy cherries, wild berries and subtle grilled meats, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample but inscrutably tight-knit palate. The outlines are promising, but it needs more élevage, so my score is more than usually imprecise.Inc. VAT£116.39
