The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras was less put together when I tasted it, offering up aromas of juicy cherries, wild berries and subtle grilled meats, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample but inscrutably tight-knit palate. Vinous (91-93)
The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru is matured in slightly less new oak than the Charmes. It has a very intense, almost flamboyant floral nose, bunches of violets and iris complementing the black cherry and cassis fruit. The palate is well balanced with a very sweet candied core of fruit and touches of menthol and licorice toward the finish. Very fine, although I prefer the noblesse of the Charmes.Inc. VAT£136.00 -

(from vines planted in 1987, from a .37 ha holding). A perfumed and attractively elegant nose is comprised by aromas of black raspberry, cherry, soft wood and wet stone. Here too the palate impression of the medium-bodied flavors is supple, seductive and succulent while flashing more evident minerality on the lingering if mildly sweet finish that isn’t really intrusive but I can’t say that it appeals to me. To be fair, it’s quite possible that the sweetness will dissipate in time as the oak treatment is more completely integrated.Expected Price Range£405 - £495 -

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes, from 60 to 80-year old vines, has a powerful bouquet with ebullient dark cherry, violet and cassis notes, a hint of melted chocolate in the background. The palate is well balanced, quite intense with sappy black cherry and boysenberry fruit vying for attention on the finish. You get the feeling this is holding something in reserve so give it 5-6 years in the cellar.Inc. VAT£99.72 -

The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes comes from six parcels from around the appellation. There is a touch of reduction on the nose, dark berry fruit mixed with iris flower and a touch of pencil box. A little introspective at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with a candied entry, quite sweet with a lot of sucrosity. Maybe that detracts from its complexity towards the finish, which tapers when you want it to fan out. (from Fouchères, Les Mombies, Les Babillières, Nazoires, Les Mal Carrées and Les Chardannes). A ripe and quite fresh array combines notes of black cherry with those of spice and an admirably discreet dollop of wood. The succulent and caressing middle weight flavors possess solid volume before concluding in a robust, powerful and slightly warm finish. This is not really in the mode of a lace and grace Chambolle but does offer fine depth and persistence in an age-worthy package. Worth considering.Inc. VAT£417.20 -

Otherwise there is a lovely vibrancy to the lacy and intense flavors that possess a polished mouthfeel thanks to the relatively fine-grained tannins, all wrapped in a serious and mineral-driven finale. The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Village has a vivid bouquet with red cherries, cranberry and violet scents, actually, quite Vosne-like in personality. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, quite poised and tense with a dash of spice on the finish. This exemplary village-level Chambolle has more stuffing than many, with ripe plummy fruit and notes of earth and mineral. The structure is firm and tannic and shows the vintage's freshness, drawing the wine to a stunning, elegant conclusion. The grapes come from 11 parcels totaling 0.85 hectares in a selection of lieux-dits scattered throughout the village, including Les Cras, Les Nazoires, Les Condemennes, and others. The grapes are mostly destemmed, slowly fermented on native yeasts over 18 days, and will be aged in mainly used barrels over two winters.Inc. VAT£639.20 -

The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Village has a refined bouquet with dark berry fruit, touches of wilted rose petals suffusing the raspberry and cranberry scents and neatly integrated oak. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru felt rather stemmy on the nose, especially when compared to others in this flight, although it improves with aeration and gains cohesion. A hint of Earl Grey perhaps? The palate is medium-bodied with firm, almost rigid tannin. The acidity is well judged and lends this a sense of natural balance and poise, which particularly comes through on the tensile finish. This is a very fine Clos Vougeot made with a deft hand. Conveys a youthfully medicinal quality and an impression of power to its brooding black cherry, dark chocolate and menthol flavors but this grand cru is less filled in today than the Malconsorts. (5 Star Wine) 8.5 barrels instead of 13. Dense, black purple here, nose suggests depth power and quality without detail. This is really fine on the palate with a starburst of energy, not too ripe at all with some raspberry essence taking the lead. Tannins and acidity in perfect balance, properly persistent. Moderate reduction is sufficient to dominate the nose today. Otherwise, there is almost painful intensity to the sleek medium-bodied flavors that also conclude in a slightly lean and decidedly austere finale. Here too the leanness is exacerbated by the high level of gas so I suspect that this too will better harmonize with time in bottle though with that said, I doubt that it will ever be seductive eitherInc. A vivid mid purple. The bouquet suggests some concentration but a youthful hiding of the detail. On the palate, this is clearly extremely well-constructed and the deep red fruit fills the mouth.
