  • Humbert Freres Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles St Jacques 2012 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

Healthy dark red. Aromas and flavors of crushed black raspberry, coffee, licorice and sweet oak spices; smells creamier than the Poissenots. Fat, sweet and deep on the palate, conveying near-grand cru volume and a wonderfully silky texture. This big boy finishes very long, with fine-grained but firm tannins.

  • Humbert Freres Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles St Jacques 2013 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (90-93)

(from 65-year-old vines): Bright, deep red. Medicinal black cherry and minerals on the reticent nose. Densely packed and youthfully imploded, showing little in the way of early sweetness. The pungent black cherry, blackberry and licorice flavors show terrific clarity and class but will require extended aging to blossom in bottle. The tannins spread out to saturate the entire palate on the long, perfumed, violet-tinged finish.

  • Humbert Freres Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles St Jacques 2014 (1x75cl)

Dark red with ruby tones. As primary as a barrel sample today, conveying a slightly reductive quality, not to mention a touch of rusticity, to the aromas and flavors of black fruits, dark chocolate, licorice and leather. Very rich, deep premier cru with strong salty minerality and an obvious oak element to its tannins. This is the longest and most perfumed 2014 to this point in my tasting.

(from very shallow, calcaire-rich soil on a steep slope): Good dark red. Deeply pitched aromas of black cherry, smoke, crushed rock and earth. Suave and energetic, showing distinct minerality to its flavors of dark raspberry, cherry pit and smoky soil tones. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and excellent length. Humbert believes that many of his clients will drink this wine early, which he feels would be a pity.

  • Humbert Freres Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Poissenot 2001 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

Saturated ruby-red; one of the darkest 2001s I tasted in Burgundy this fall. Very ripe aromas of dark berries, tar and licorice show a porty quality but in a fresh way. Quite rich and plush but youthful in the mouth, with harmonious acidity giving shape to the complex, spicy flavors of dark berries, black cherry and licorice complicated by leather and flowers. This is really stuffed with fruit: no hole in the middle here! The fine-grained, slightly dusty tannins arrive late. Emmanuel Humbert described this wine as a vin de garde style from the start, with the sound malic acidity that's to his taste. He noted that 2001 was a bit like 2010 in that the wines started out austere. He was also punching down much more back then, and this is certainly a classic, slowly evolving Burgundy.
  • Humbert Freres Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Poissenot 2012 (1x300cl)

    Vinous (92+)

Bright, dark red. Crushed black and blue fruits lifted by violet on the nose (black fruits are a sign of great phenolic maturity, noted Humbert). Saline, sappy and rich, with dark fruit, licorice and menthol flavors spreading out to saturate the palate. More minerally than the Petite Chapelle, with an element of complexity that comes from successful ripening in a cool combe. Should make a terrific accompaniment to game dishes.

  • Humbert Freres Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Poissenot 2016 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (91-93)

(the crop level was normal in 2016; the Humberts own nearly one hectare out of a total of two for the appellation, with their 45-to-50-year-old vines facing full south): Bright, dark red. Very ripe, almost exotic nose conveys a hot-rocks character that reminded me of Châteauneuf du Pape! The plushest and sweetest of these premier crus, with black cherry and licorice flavors dominating. Finishes with big, ripe tannins and terrific echoing length. Conveys an impression of full phenolic maturity.

  • Humbert Freres Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles St Jacques 2014 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (92+)

Dark red with ruby tones. As primary as a barrel sample today, conveying a slightly reductive quality, not to mention a touch of rusticity, to the aromas and flavors of black fruits, dark chocolate, licorice and leather. Very rich, deep premier cru with strong salty minerality and an obvious oak element to its tannins. This is the longest and most perfumed 2014 to this point in my tasting.

Impressive dark ruby-red color. Slightly high-toned scents of blackberry, kirsch, crushed stone and licorice complemented by extravagant chocolate and mocha nuances. Strong and sweet on the attack, showing intense, high-toned dark berry, spice and licorice flavors, then firmer and more minerally on the back end, finishing with a serious spine of fine-grained tannins and excellent supporting acidity.
