The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Argillats 1er Cru has quite a backward yet precise nose, dark cherries, iodine and violet scents. Good definition but surly at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chalky tannins, taut and fresh, quite saline on the finish but the compactness of this cuvée suggests that it will need 4-5 years in bottle.Inc. VAT£783.20 -

The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Argillats 1er Cru has a little more horsepower behind it on the nose with dark berry fruit, hints of bay leaf and black tea. Fine delineation, although there is a tad more oak to be assimilated. Maybe a hint of Brettanomyces? The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity that cuts through the mainly black fruit. Good tension with blood orange notes emerging towards the finish, which shows fine depth, though maybe just missing a little soul. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.Inc. VAT£893.60 -

Matured in around 40% new oak, the 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Au Bas de Combe Vieilles Vignes has a very controlled, focused bouquet of raspberry and bilberry fruit, beautifully defined and very terroir-expressive. The palate is well balanced and stylistically equidistant between Nuits Saint-Georges and Vosne-Romanée, betraying its geographical location. The 85-year-old vines impart great concentration but also immense quality, more Premier Cru than Village Cru. Superb.Inc. VAT£377.60 -

Vivacious mid ruby, with a greater density of fruit on the nose, mainly raspberry, at just the right degree of ripeness. As always, this is the most complete of the Tardy village wines with both muscle and finesse, and the longest finish. The upper part seems to Guillaume to reflect the soil of Aux Boudots above, while the lower part has more clay. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted Nov 2024.Expected Price Range£396 - £484 -

Moderately saturated dark red. A bit lower-pitched than the Chambolle, with liqueur-like berry aromas complicated by mocha and earth notes. Ripe, plush and sweet, conveying more weight and texture but less energy and definition than the Chambolle, with its red and darker berry flavors complemented by suggestion of coffee. Boasts good material but could use a bit more nuance and grip. The present but initially very supple tannins turn dustier with air. This wine is the lowest in acidity of the 2015s I tasted chez Tardy, at 3.5 grams per liter; most of the other '15s are around 3.8, with the Echézeaux at 3.9.Inc. VAT£104.93 -

The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Vigneux is well-defined and focused on the nose: dark cherry and plummy fruit, hints of pressed violets emerge with time. The 2018 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru comes from the six rows owned by the domaine that usually yield two barrels, raised this year in a single 456-liter barrel that the Bachelets have been employing since the 2017 vintage, as they find it imparts greater purity than the single-barrel size. This has a very precise bouquet, taut and focused with scents of orange blossom and pressed yellow flowers; great intensity here. The palate is very intense, the oak nicely integrated and displaying a keen line of acidity. The oak turns a little more dominant toward the finish, as you would expect, though it is in proportion to the fruit and there is a lovely nuttiness/smokiness conveyed by the persistent finish. This is an excellent Bienvenue but it will deserve cellaring for several years.Inc. VAT£682.07 -

Bessin’s 2017 Chablis Grand Cru Valmur has evolved beautifully, retaining superb balance and a promising sense of unspent potential. It is brilliant, offering a deep bouquet of orange peel, apricot and iodine, mingled with beeswax and a hint of gunflint. On the palate, it is full-bodied and concentrated, layered with a sense of plenitude and texture that few wines possess. It is built around a muscular core and underpinned by racy acidity and structuring extract, culminating in a long, chalky finish. This is as good as mid-term mature Chablis gets— not to be missed. In Bond£649.00 -

The 2021 Chablis Grand Cru Valmur is a taut, chiseled wine, unfurling to reveal aromas of citrus zest, crisp green apple, iodine, white flowers and freshly baked bread. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's bright and racy and concludes with a penetratingly saline finish. As ever, it's one of the best Chablis of the vintage. In Bond£304.00 -

One of the late bloomers in bottle, as always, is the 2023 Chablis Grand Cru Valmur. The aromatic range is evocative of mirabelle plum, orange peel, fennel and oyster liquor. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and concentrated, with a deep and crystalline core of fruit brimming with energy. Its incisive acidity and saline undertow frame a long, reverberating finish. If Fourchaume is expressive and giving, Valmur is elegantly reserved, and it will demand considerable patience before revealing its cards. In Bond£77.00
