The 2021 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a light nose with red berry fruit and light tertiary scents. Initially, it suggests a shortfall in complexity and vigour, yet after ten minutes, it coheres nicely and gains bags of charm. The palate is well balanced with fine tannins. Crisp and sapid, this offers tightly coiled red fruit that conveys a sense of energy. Bright and tensile on the finish, this is a Clos de Vougeot that I end up admiring. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.Inc. VAT£811.60 -
(12x75cl) 2016Wine Advocate (88-90)
The 2016 Fixin Village was taken from foudres that had been racked one month earlier. There is no new oak on this cuvée. It has a crisp redcurrant and cranberry-scented bouquet with a hint of wet clay coming through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin, crisp acidity, quite linear at the moment with a tightly knit, lightly spiced finish. This is a worthy follow-up to the 2015.Inc. VAT£981.67 -

The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux St. Jacques is one of the most expressive wines in this range. The inclusion of 40% whole clusters lends an extra dimension of aromatic lift and nuance. Sweet red cherry, crushed rocks and mint liven up the finish in an absolutely impeccable wine loaded with pedigree. Readers who can find the 2013 should not hesitate, as it is terrific.Inc. The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits Monts 1er Cru has another quite high-toned and opulent nose like Domaine Georges Noellat's, but here there is more red fruit and Pinoté evident. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy and ripe, fine structure with quite a minerally, chalky-texture, sapid finish that lingers nicely in the mouth. Just a little lactic and chocolaty on the finish - perhaps from the oak. That will be addressed with time in bottle. Very fine. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.Inc. VAT£803.58 -
Vinous (93-95)
The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits-Monts 1er Cru has more intensity and slightly darker fruit compared to the Les Suchots, but it shares the same enthralling delineation and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. This displays exquisite balanced, a little tight on the finish but it is supremely well focused with a very persistent, lightly peppered finish courtesy of the 20% whole bunches. Wonderful.Inc. The 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru contains 60% whole bunches. It comes from three plots that, still, only made two and a half barrels this year. It has a very well defined bouquet that seems to blossom in the glass, although it will need some time for the stems to be assimilated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very peppery in style with touches of white pepper and bay leaf towards the persistent finish. This is a classy wine, one that is not unlike Dujac’s Echézeaux!Inc. VAT£1,557.96 -

The 2021 Echézeaux Grand Cru saw some protection with candles in the vineyard during frost, though still there was partial loss. The nose opens with redcurrant and light blueberry scents, a touch of incense. The 30% stems is neatly integrated. The palate is well balanced with fine grip, quite taut and linear, chalky, building towards quite a tensile finish though maybe without quite the sustain of the very best examples from this Grand Cru. Yet it is still a very capable Echézeaux that will deliver the goods for 15 to 20 years.Inc. VAT£2,493.20 -

Vinous - Neal Martin (92)
The 2021 Fixin Les Arvelets 1er Cru offers simple, slightly rustic brambly red fruit on the nose intermixed with damp loamy undergrowth scents. I appreciate the harmony here. The palate is medium-bodied with a lightly spiced entry. Dark red berry fruit (cranberry and raspberry) dovetails into a peppery, slightly viscous finish. Quite bold for the vintage and well crafted. It would not surprise me if this gives 15+ years' drinking pleasure. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.Inc. VAT£803.60 -

The 2020 Fixin En Combe Roy is very cohesive and focused, demonstrating a little more control than the Les Crais by direct comparison. The palate is full of red plummy fruit with hints of brown spices, fine weight with a lovely feisty finish. This is well-worth seeking out.Inc. VAT£408.72 -
Burghound (90)
This is aromatically similar to the Les Crais though with the addition of a discreet dollop of wood. There is a bit more volume and power to the medium-bodied flavors that flash ample minerality on the moderately austere finale that delivers first-rate depth and persistence. This excellent and ageworthy effort is a classic Fixin and very much worth your interest.Inc. VAT£312.80 -
