Vinous (90-92)

The 2017 Volnay Vendange Sélectionée comes from vines that lie just below the line of Premier Crus. It has a bright bouquet with wild strawberry, red cherries and a faint, almost ash-like scent. It is very well defined. The palate is quite fleshy and rounded on the entry, finely judged in terms of acidity, with a slightly crunchiness to the texture on the finish, just a dab of white pepper on the aftertaste. Probably one of the most overlooked of Lafarge's Volnays - I suggest you don't.

Vinous (89-91)

The 2018 Volnay "Vendage Sélectionée" is a selection from four parcels below Echards, Pluchots, Jeotte and Grand Champs that is matured in a little new oak. It has a high-toned bouquet of blueberry and raspberry fruit, and little cassis emerges with time in the glass. The palate is sweet and succulent on the entry and very supple in the mouth, delivering black cherries and blueberry toward the finish. Very fine.

Vinous (91-93)

The 2019 Volnay "Vendange Sélectionée" comes from four parcels located just under the Premier Crus that tends to have more complexity and structure. There is a clear difference on the nose compared to the Village Cru with deeper red berry fruit that is certainly more intense. The palate is beautifully balanced with chalky tannins, red fruit with a lovely piquancy on the finish that fans out wonderfully. Superb.

Outstanding Top value. This is aromatically similar to the straight Volnay but with more evidence spice and floral elements. There is outstanding intensity to the dense and powerful flavors that coat the palate with dry extract on the impressively long, balanced and firmly structured finale. This is absolutely terrific for its level and easily boxes above its weight.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-92)

(from Mazoyeres) Bright red-ruby. Complex, musky aromas of black cherry, dark chocolate, dried flowers and smoked meat. Juicy, spicy and youthfully imploded; hints at strong spice and dried flowers but this is very closed today, even a bit dry. Finishes spicy and long. This will require patience.

(all Mazoyères, from vines planted in the mid-1950s): Saturated dark red. Enticing perfume of black fruits, rose petal and Asian spices. Packed with dark fruits and spices but distinctly muscular and backward in the early going. This highly concentrated wine finishes with a note of licorice and powerful tannic spine.

(vinified with 60% whole clusters): Bright, dark red. Restrained aromas of black cherry and licorice show a slightly medicinal aspect. Fatter than the premier crus but less showy today, conveying an impression of medicinal reserve and little easy early sweetness. This rather backward wine finishes with plush, palate-saturating tannins and a strong repeating licorice quality, but some emerging dryness limited my enthusiasm.

Good full dark red. Tangy, complex, but somewhat reduced nose melds redcurrant, smoked meat and earth. Dense and creamy-sweet, with a lovely mineral lift to the red berry flavors. This is wonderfully lush and silky for the vintage but with vibrancy. The rich finish features sappy brown spices and sneaky persistence, with tannins thoroughly buffered by the wine's material.

Bright, moderately saturated medium red. A touch of reduction to the pure but withdrawn aromas and flavors of wild strawberry, flowers and spices. Bigger, richer and sweeter than the Clos Saint-Denis, showing a captivating sappy ripeness and serious concentration. The wine's rocky minerality really clamps down on the finish, with the horizontal, integrated tannins spreading out to saturate the mouth and front teeth. Quite powerful but an infant today, with all the elements for long-term aging.

Bright, full medium red. Very ripe aromas of cherry and strawberry. Then surprisingly sappy and stylish on the palate, displaying lovely finesse of texture without any undue weight. Wonderfully broad and deep for premier cru, but with spicy high notes contributing to the wine's impression of definition and its light touch; there's also an element of medicinal reserve that I did not find in the Millandes. Best today on the very long finish, which features noble, fine-grained tannins and terrific rising perfume. I'm not sure I would have picked this blind as a 2015, in spite of the almost candied ripeness shown by the nose.
