Vinous - Neal Martin (90)

The 2021 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru has a sultry nose with quite a stubborn reduction in situ. The aromatics want to leap from the glass but are being held back. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins on the entry. Dark berry fruit is quite sweet but lacks complexity and the finish feels conservative and a bit mealy. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Burghound (91-94)

(from Clos St. Denis proper). A top note of herbal tea is present on the spicy mix of red and dark pinot fruit, violet and lilac. The caressing, delicious and nicely vibrant medium-bodied flavors seem supple and succulent to the point of being plush yet immediately firm up on the dusty, youthfully austere and sneaky long finale. Because the mid-palate is so accessible this should be approachable on the younger side yet repay extended keeping.

Vinous (88)

The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis Faconnières 1er Cru is backward on the nose with blackcurrant and raspberry fruit, not complex and maybe showing some overripeness compared to its peers (indeed, it bears semblance to the Chambolles in 2018). There is some brettanomyces here. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, quite muscular in style but there is a nagging greenness that juts out on the aftertaste. Perhaps some fruit that did not attain phenolic ripeness? Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

Vinous - Neal Martin (90)

The 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis Faconnières 1er Cru has an impressive mineral-driven nose that unfolds in the glass with scents of dark plum, oyster shell and light sous-bois. Very precise with assiduous use of oak. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, fleshy and bright, though I find the acidity quite penetrating on the finish. Perhaps there is some underripe fruit here, although I appreciate its brininess and length. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Vinous - Neal Martin (88)

The 2023 Bourgogne Aligoté was bottled in April. It has a clean and sharp bouquet—a little more malic, perhaps from the fruit located up in the Hautes-Côtes. The palate is well balanced, a little oily in texture, with fine acidity and a lighter, sour lemon- and ginger-tinged finish. Enjoy this over the next four or five years.
