Wine Advocate (93)

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Combe d'Orveau from Taupenot-Merme has a more understated bouquet than Groffier's 2014 Les Haut Doix, perhaps more Morey-Saint-Denis in style, yet it is nicely focused and fresh and delivers ample mineralité. The palate is very well balanced with good substance, sappy black fruit laced with spice and a very dense but poised finish that feels primal and backwards now but will hopefully age with style. This surpasses my estimation from barrel, hence the higher score. Tasted September 2017.

Vinous (93)

Healthy dark red. Piquant high-pitched scents of raspberry, bitter cherry and crushed rock. Wonderfully dense, bright and light on its feet, offering terrific rose petal lift to its pungent red berry and saline mineral flavors. A pure expression of crushed-stone terroir, and yet there's also a silkiness here that suggests a gentle extraction. The tannins are very suave but the wine shows signs of closing down in the bottle and will need patience. I'm not sure if I'd pick this brisk, sharply delineated beauty as a 2015.

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d'Orveau 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet of red cherry, cranberry and crushed stone aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very good acidity and a gorgeous, silky-smooth finish infused with impressive mineralité. An excellent Chambolle-Musigny from Romain Taupenot.

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d'Orveau 1er Cru has a showy bouquet with raspberry, cranberry, bergamot and tea leaf aromas, perhaps just needing a little more cohesion that should develop during the remainder of its maturation. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, black fruit laced with graphite leading to a fresh, classically styled finish that stylistically reminds me of Morey than Chambolle. Time will let it make up its mind what it wants to grow up and become, but it will be quite excellent.

The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Village has a tight-knit bouquet, earthier than the Auxey-Duresses with a touch of damp woodland complementing the sultry black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, bright red berry fruit laced with sea salt, leading to quite a precise and sappy finish that has more joie-de-vivre than the aromatics. Given the challenging growing season, this is a great success.

The 2011 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, which comes from 0.57 hectares of 32-year-old vine, is attired in a perfumed ferrous bouquet that is broody at the moment and perhaps needs another year to open up. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine structure, though it seems foursquare and shows slight attenuation toward the finish. It actually showed better when re-tasted a month later at the domaine when it exhibited finer precision. Drink 2014-2020.

Romain Taupenot has not been afraid to make ageworthy wines in 2012, but they aren't overly tannic or woody, just structured and well balanced. This is a case in point: a subtly oaked Grand Cru with real drive and precision. The fruit is sweet and supple, but it's surrounded by fine-grained tannins and mineral freshness.

The 2013 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is a wine that I have not tasted since in barrel. It has blossomed on the nose with charming redcurrant, Morello and tertiary scents, a subtle damp moss and undergrowth aroma gradually becoming more prominent with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, a palpable sense of energy and impressive precision towards the finish that leaves the mouth tingling with glee afterwards. Impressive and this comes highly recommended. Tasted at Flint Wines’ Taupenot-Merme retrospective.

The 2015 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru has an expressive bouquet with redcurrant, raspberry coulis, a touch of honey and a hint of Seville orange marmalade. It opens nicely in the glass, though does not slip into fifth gear at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, cohesive in the mouth and quite saline and spicy. There is generosity here, a trait of Charmes-Chambertin, with the mineral core surfacing right at the finish as it fans out. This is an impressive follow-up to the superb 2014 and it should give 20+ years of pleasure.

Bright red-ruby. Slightly medicinal aromas of blackberry, licorice and violet complicated by a rocky quality. Pungent, tangy and high-pitched, offering a very fine-grained texture to its flavors of cassis, black cherry and violet; aeration brought a slightly less black note of raspberry and sexy savory soil tones. From vines on very shallow soil just across the Route des Grands Crus from Chambertin, this wine offers terrific punch and building sweetness. Both these vines and those in Mazoyères-Chambertin were planted shortly after World War II but a small part of the Charmes was replanted in 1998.

The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a straightforward, focused bouquet with brambly red fruit, briary and tea leaf aromas, though it just lacks the assertiveness and intensity you seek from a Grand Cru. Quite Mazoyères in terms of structure towards the finish, this will benefit from 4-6 years in bottle.

The 2019 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru is a "decent" quantity this year according to Romain Taupenot, though that only equates to a measly 170-litres. Despite the miniscule quantity, this is still de-stemmed. It has a crisp nose with brambly red berry fruit, pressed rose petals and a touch of Earl Grey.
