Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)A dark purple colour. Quite a ripe fruit which could use the cleaning up of a racking, at which time it will have the sulphur adjusted. Dark ripe cherries on the nose. A wealth of fruit at the front end, some tannins but not astringent behind, a dark strawberry fruit to finish. This has the makings of a very good wine once it has finished its elevage and been cleaned up for bottling. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: October 2023. |

Hailing from a small parcel near the tree line that produces some 700 bottles in an average vintage, the wine is full-bodied, layered and elegantly structured, with powdery tannins, lively acids and a perfumed finish. |

This has a lovely, quite intellectual bouquet with wonderful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with red berry fruit, hoisin, white pepper and thyme, very focused and poised with a persistent and very satisfying, rather substantial finish. Bon vin. |

Captivating nose combines raspberry, red licorice, iron, dried rose, mocha and minerals. all lifted by a high-pitched floral quality. Wonderfully juicy, intense and delineated, showing great energy but also considerable medicinal reserve. Silky and utterly weightless wine with great delicacy and outstanding balance. The rising, highly perfumed, extremely long aftertaste is like a wake-up call for the taste buds. The tannins here are remarkably suave. |

Bouchard has the same 80 ares every year. The nose has an inviting rose petal lift while the palate fills with sturdy black fruits. Vinous (91-93)The 2021 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru comes from the négociant side, from the same 0.8-hectare plot harvested by Bouchard’s team one hour before the rain. This has quite a reduced nose, metallic at the moment and occluding the terroir expression. The palate is balanced on the entry, quite rounded with ample fruit, mulberry and red plum mixed with dried herbs. Harmonious on the finish. Give this time in bottle before broaching. |

Fat, rich and sweet but a bit youthfully stunted and backward today, conveying flavors of plum, mocha and clove. Finishes with big tannins and lingering sweetness. Am I missing something? Gives an impression of very fast ripening of the fruit. |

Vinous (91-93)(30% vendange entier): Good dark red with ruby tones. Sexy nose combines black raspberry, smoky minerality, coffee and a whiff of animal fur; smells sweet! Then very ripe and fat in the mouth, with plush, almost syrupy red fruit flavors energized by a note of cherry pit. Still, this wine doesn't offer quite the clarity or lift of the Bouchard vinification. Finishes with serious but ripe tannins. I find this a bit extreme for the year. |

Vinous (89-91)The 2018 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from purchased fruit. This is one cuvée that showed some over-maturity on the nose (it was picked September 16), and the almost 15% alcohol is tangible. The sweet, confit-like palate is fleshy and seductive, yet it does not communicate the essence of this Grand Cru as well as others that I have encountered. |
