Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (92-95)
Lively aromas of apple, lemon, minerals and vanilla bean. Creamy sweet and wonderfully intense, with tangy freshness and complicating floral notes. Finishes with explosive fruit. From 75-year-old vines, to comprise roughly half the ultimate blend: Penetrating lemon oil and charred oak aromas. Extremely rich and powerful, with the wine's strong mineral character contributing to the impression of dryness. Really gripping, tactile finish. Large-scaled but uncommonly elegant Charmes.Inc. VAT£1,657.56 -
Vinous (93-95)
(tasted from tank) Aromas of peach and vanilla. Rich, fat and classically dry, with compelling purity to the lemon, crushed stone and mineral flavors. Perfectly integrated acidity extends the palate-staining, layered finish. With a blend of 15-, 45- and 75-year-old vines in his 1.7-hectares holding in Charmes, Lafon has the flexibility each year to make one of Burgundy's top Meursault bottlings.Inc. VAT£458.39 -
Vinous (93-95)
(tasted from barrel; the wine was scheduled to be racked the week after my visit) Restrained nose hints at candied citrus peel, flowers, vanilla and smoky lees. On the palate, lovely sweetness is perfectly buffered by ripe acidity, but this is very backward and minerally wine-more Perrieres-like than most other growers' Perrieres. Taut and uncompromising, and less showy than the Genevrieres.Inc. VAT£397.32 -
Vinous (93+)
(bottled the day before my visit; aged in 40% new oak): Complex, vibrant aromas of peach, orange zest and lemon accented by white pepper. Rich, ripe, tactile and sweet, with the intense citrus and stone fruit flavors accented by peppery spices and complicated by vanilla and leesy nuances. A very good showing today, but this is still a baby.Inc. VAT£517.19 -

(6x75cl) 2012Vinous (94)
(one-third new oak): Pale bright yellow. Classic aromas of lemon cream, minerals and sexy lees, along with subtle oak notes of char and coconut. Mouthfilling and ripe but bright and sharply delineated, with harmonious acidity and underlying minerality giving the wine an urgent sappy quality. Really resounds on the palate-staining finish.Inc. VAT£2,627.09 -
(1x75cl) 2013Vinous (93-94)
(on its finings): Lemon-yellow color. Ripe peach, hazelnut and vanillin oak on the classic Meursault nose. Boasts a terrific combination of refined texture and outstanding inner-palate tension, showing the flavor intensity and verve to support a long and graceful evolution in bottle. Finishes with outstanding lemon-zest cut and length. My style of Meursault, and downright electric in the context of the year.Inc. VAT£499.19 -
(1x75cl) 2014Wine Advocate (95)
Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, the 2014 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes from Comtes Lafon was not firing on all cylinders from barrel but clearly this is not the case now that the wine is in bottle. It demonstrated a subtle reduction on the nose with scents of dried quince complementing the citrus fruit, walnut and smoke aromas. The palate is well balanced with fine delineation, harmonious with notes of tangerine and orange zest, the oak nicely integrated with appreciable weight on the finish. Very fine, very sophisticated—this surpasses my expectations from barrel.Inc. VAT£734.39 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (95)
The 2015 Meursault Les Charmes 1er Cru is taut and linear, more reticent than the Clos de la Barre at the moment, yet it evolves in the glass and reveals a Perrières-like stoniness. The palate pivots around a silver bead of acidity with citrus peel and nectarine notes, demonstrating greater depth than its peers on the powerful finish. Superb! Tasted at the 05/15 Burgundy dinner in The Good Earth.Inc. VAT£463.19 -
(12x75cl) 2016Wine Advocate (95)
The 2016 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes is superb, unfurling in the glass with aromas of crisp peaches, apples, dried white flowers, honeycomb and oatmeal. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, satiny and pure, with a deep, concentrated and multidimensional core, vibrant acids and a long finish. There's plenty of tight-knit structure and dry extract here, so this should be a long-lived Charmes.Inc. VAT£4,985.47 -

The 2018 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes is also showing very well, revealing aromas of pear, crisp yellow orchard fruit, fresh peach, almond paste and white flowers, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and muscular palate that's deep, concentrated and structured, with more texture and a more introverted profile than the more expressive Genevrières. This is another great bottle in the making.Inc. VAT£4,010.52 -

(5-Star Wine) An attractive faint green tint to the colour. The nose shows no signs of heat or heaviness. This is magical on the palate, absolutely fills the mouth, ripe lemons on top of rich pear fruit, but nothing peachy or over-ripe. A brilliant example of Charmes, as the vineyard and the vintage are completely in harmony. Drink from 2026-2035.Inc. VAT£4,110.24 -

The 2021 Meursault Les Charmes 1er Cru is strict with wet pavement and green apple/pear scents on the nose, though it does open with time in the glass. The palate is fresh on the entry, yet this is somehow conservative and does not really exploit the potential of this 1er Cru. Played it safe? Then again, there is a lovely creamy finish with a dash of spice that urges you back for more. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.Inc. VAT£371.99 -

The 2022 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes showed very well from barrel, and it's just as good in bottle. Wafting from the glass with notes of pear, waxy citrus rind, white flowers, freshly baked bread and honeycomb, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and concentrated, with an elegantly muscular profile and a long, precise finish.Inc. Vinous (92+)
Perfumed aromas of hazelnut, lime and spice. Rich but racy and stylish; youthful and minerally. Rather elegantly styled wine, quite precise for the vintage. Very long on the finish. Lafon now uses just 50% new oak for his Genevrieres; as recently as 1992, this was made in all new barrels.Inc. VAT£436.13 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (94-96)
The 2018 Meursault Les Genevrières 1er Cru has a refined bouquet with scents of pressed yellow flowers infusing the citrus fruit, touches of ocean spray emerging and lending complexity with time. The palate is extremely well balanced. A quintessential Genevrières with a killer saline finish that is an absolute joy. Wonderful.Inc. VAT£502.92 -

The 2011 Meursault Perrières is without question the most complete of the 2011 1er Crus from Comtes Lafon. Refined and impeccably polished throughout, the 2011 is vivid in the glass, with crystalline purity and seemingly endless layers of fruit. Pear, peach, spice, slate and licorice notes all emerge from a powerful, tense Meursault loaded with class and pedigree. As is often the case, the Perrières borrows from both the Charmes and Genevrières.Inc. VAT£671.33 -
(1x75cl) 2013Vinous (93-95)
(ready to bottle): Bright, light yellow. Aromas of lemon drop, pineapple and wet stone. Dense and sappy but not austere, showing serious thickness of texture to its urgent flavors of peach, pineapple and minerals. Finishes firm and extremely long but without obvious phenolic character. This is 2010-like in quality but not at all hard. (I will wait to taste the Montrachet in finished form as it had just been racked into tank at the end of May and was extremely reduced. This huge--13.2% natural alcohol--but more phenolic wine boasts outstanding concentration but will clearly require extended cellaring.)Inc. VAT£663.85 -

Pale, bright yellow. Extremely precise aromas of soft citrus fruits, crushed rock and smoky minerality. Enters the mouth silky and thick but lively, showing a seamless texture along with lovely gingery spicy lift. A wonderfully dry but ripe Perrières with a fine dusting of stone and superb energy and class. More mineral and less floral than the Genevrières.Inc. VAT£736.79
