At Boillot they normally make a single, 350-litre barrel of Montrachet, lightly crushing the fruit before pressing in a basket press. The results in 2019 were absolutely beautiful. Mid lemon colour. Discreet but majestic nose. No problem with at all. So many threads on the palate, one greener which lifts it, but the individual fruits should not be singled out – nectarine, passion fruit without excess, a broad base of your favourite apple, lean and sinewy but entirely compelling. Bright pale-medium yellow. Rich, deep aromas of peach, iodine and oyster shell, with hints of eucalyptus and white truffle. Fat, sweet and compellingly rich but also chewy and tight, conveying a powerful impression of dry extract. The 2014 Montrachet Grand Cru (which incidentally Jacques was thinking about two cuvées from his two parcels) has a refined bouquet with lovely yellow flower and mineral scents that unfurl from the glass. This shows its class. What an enveloping nose of fully ripe apricot, orange and persimmon this opulent, yet seamlessly balanced Montrachet Grand Cru has! The 2013 Chevalier-Montrachet Clos de Chevalier Grand Cru has a slightly muffled bouquet compared to its peers, needing to muster more precision and mineral expression. The 2008 Montrachet Grand Cru is a vintage that I had not tasted before. Véronique Drouhin commented that the clement harvest weather saved the vintage, but it was a small yield with small berries that were high in acidity. The 2008 is showing beautifully at the moment. It has a fabulous bouquet of honeycomb, yellow flowers, crushed stone and even a touch of gingerbread. The palate conveys an effervescent quality, showing veins of orange peel and mandarin, and less mineralité than the 2009 but a fine saline finish. It improves in the glass, so do not be afraid to decant this. Tasted at the Montrachet vertical in London.Inc. VAT£2,825.74 -

The 2009 Montrachet Grand Cru is now beginning to flex its muscles. It was an “easy vintage,” according to Véronique Drouhin, cropped at 20hl/ha from September 15. Appearance-wise, it is similar to the 2011. The bouquet is surprisingly tight at first but then opens its arms with just a few swirls of the glass, offering heady scents of honeysuckle and yellow flowers and a touch of crushed pebble underneath. The palate boasts impressive precision considering the warmth of the growing season. Wonderful penetration and drive are evident here. Grilled walnut and nutmeg emerge toward the finish. Just superb. The complexity and sheer magnitude of Montrachet is on full show here. A powerful expression of the largest holdings in the Puligny side of the vineyard. Grilled hazelnuts, grilled peaches, grapefruit and lemon citrus, as well as a layer of spiced nougat-like aromas. There’s a very long, concentrated and dense palate that starts out cloaked in flavors of rich peaches and glossy fruits. The flavors then peel away in layers as it sits on the palate, revealing a very focused, refined and essence-like citrus core with tremendous elegance and intensity. (this was bottled in May of 2005, whereas all of the above 2003s were bottled during the summer of 2004) Steely aromas of pineapple, stone, spices and mint; shows a distinctly metallic minerality. Then sweet, dense and rich, with outstanding depth of pineapple and stone flavors. Expands impressively on the back half, and finishes with resounding persistence and great purity. Accessible already but should be better with another couple years of aging. Very suave Montrachet. This wine should not explode now and then fade away, notes Frederic. In Bond£781.00 -

Very fresh and lively and layered. Rich but lots of green notes too. Very powerful yet delicate. Lots of richness. Reverberates, very, very exciting. Extremely muscular. In Bond£2,660.00 -

The truly amazing 2007 Joseph Drouhin Montrachet Marquis de Laguiche is a vinous work of art. Still incredibly young, the 2007 offers a tight core of remarkably pure pomaceous orchard fruit, lemony minerality and a hint of waxy butteriness that is hard to forget. An infant but already splendid, the 2007 is going to develop into something even more memorable than it already is.In Bond£2,660.00 -

Tasted at the Montrachet vertical in London. In Bond£2,341.00 -

Drink or hold through the next decade. Or even longer if you desire. In Bond£1,928.00
