Wine Advocate (92-94)

The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes unwinds in the glass with aromas of pastry cream, crisp orchard fruit, honeycomb and white flowers. On the palate, it's full-bodied, broad shouldered and powerful, with a dense, blocky profile that is classic Combettes. When I tasted it, the wine was quite reserved and less advanced in its élevage than most of Carillon's other cuvées, but its potential is clearly considerable.

Vinous (94-97)

Slightly hazy due to a recent stirring of the lees. Highly complex nose combines candied lemon, pineapple, menthol, linden tea, ginger and caramel. Thick and seamless in texture and showing a slightly exotic candied quality, but racy acidity gives sharp relief to the intense orange and lemon zest fruit. Really echoes on the gripping finish, showing a whiplash of citrus and saline flavors. These were the latest-picked vines in 2012, along with the Batard and Corton-Charlemagne, but this stunning wine remains just on the right side of surmaturite.

The 2018 Montrachet Grand Cru is brilliant, unfurling in the glass with scents of ripe oranges, fresh pear, peach, buttered citrus, warm pastry and anise. 1 x 350 litre barrel. Not especially deep in colour. The 2020 Montrachet has a fascinatingly complex nose, high toned, some bananas, but all the fruits pass across the nostrils. There is a touch of honey, with spring and summer flowers. Another league of intensity over and above Bâtard, yellower fruit overall, like a Bâtard x Folatières cross with yet more concentration. Oof! Tasted: 10/1/2021

1.5 barrels. Fullish yellow with ripe fruit, a touch of bacon fat along with Jerusalem artichokes. As well as the beautiful quality of fruit there is a saline touch. Certainly complex, not monstrously massive, showing more today than the Bâtard but there is correspondingly even more to come. Fresh white fruit at the very finish. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: December 2023.

Wine Advocate (94-96)

From an enclave within the premier cru Perrières, Boillot's 2017 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère is utterly superb this year, wafting from the glass with aromas of lemon oil, mandarin orange, beeswax, iodine and subtle smoky reduction. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, satiny and layered, with striking volume and depth at the core, balanced by incisive acids that animate the long, mineral finish. Guillaume Boillot speculates that this monopole's comparative variety of mesoclimates and soil types lends the resulting wine greater complexity than would be the case with a small cuvée.

Vinous (94-96)

The 2018 Montrachet Grand Cru is matured in 60% new oak. It has a finely tuned bouquet with scents of granite filtering through the green apple and pear aromas, and just a little linseed oil in the background. The well-balanced palate displays a fine bead of acidity, good tension from start to finish and a crescendo of concentration that leaves you feeling that you are in the presence of a famous (the most famous?) vineyard. This is a very worthy "Monty" with great potential.

Burghound (94-97)

There is a touch of phenolic character to the highly complex and exuberantly spicy nose of white peach, citrus confit, acacia blossom, Asian-style tea and just enough wood influence to merit mentioning. The imposingly dense broad-shouldered flavors possess a positively gorgeous mouthfeel thanks to the abundance of sappy dry extract that also serves to buffer the very firm acid spine supporting the strikingly persistent finish where the wood telegraphed by the nose reappears. This beauty is very, very backward and I would recommend not touching a bottle for at least ten years.

Wine Advocate (93)

Tasted blind at the annual “Burgfest” tasting in Bouilland. The 2013 Chevalier-Montrachet Clos de Chevalier Grand Cru has a slightly muffled bouquet compared to its peers, needing to muster more precision and mineral expression. The palate is fresh on the entry with a smooth and lightly honeyed texture, vanilla and white chocolate notes from the new oak, perhaps a little too generous for a wine of this standing yet undeniably quite delicious. Tasted May 2016.

An exchange enables Jean-Michel Chartron to offer some Montrachet. Pale colour with a light lime touch. The nose is tight and tense as yet ungiving, though on the palate the wine becomes super-sensual thereafter, rather ripe with peach and honeysuckle despite the comparative severity up front. The aftertaste delivers the persistence expected of a grand cru. Tasted: October 2021

Vinous (93)

(this was bottled in May of 2005, whereas all of the above 2003s were bottled during the summer of 2004) Steely aromas of pineapple, stone, spices and mint; shows a distinctly metallic minerality. Then sweet, dense and rich, with outstanding depth of pineapple and stone flavors. Expands impressively on the back half, and finishes with resounding persistence and great purity. Accessible already but should be better with another couple years of aging. Very suave Montrachet. This wine should not explode now and then fade away, notes Frederic.

The 2004 Montrachet Grand Cru is a big and very pleasant surprise. Clean and silvery in color, it has an intense, bewitching bouquet of white peach and yellow plum, touches of petrichor developing in the glass. Taut and strict yet utterly compelling, this is what a Montrachet should be about. The palate offers brilliant delineation based on a killer line of acidity, revealing hints of lemongrass and lemon peel toward the energetic finish. This is a Montrachet that just feels so “alive.” Highly recommended. Tasted at the Montrachet vertical in London.

The complexity and sheer magnitude of Montrachet is on full show here. A powerful expression of the largest holdings in the Puligny side of the vineyard. Grilled hazelnuts, grilled peaches, grapefruit and lemon citrus, as well as a layer of spiced nougat-like aromas. There’s a very long, concentrated and dense palate that starts out cloaked in flavors of rich peaches and glossy fruits. The flavors then peel away in layers as it sits on the palate, revealing a very focused, refined and essence-like citrus core with tremendous elegance and intensity. Drink or hold through the next decade. Or even longer if you desire.

The 2017 Montrachet Grand Cru is slightly deeper in color. This has a gorgeous bouquet of lemon thyme, orange blossom and crushed stone, all very focused, followed by an emerging touch of mintiness. The harmonious palate is powerful, ripe and slightly vanilla-y; it just lacks a little breeding and panache. A bold and brassy yet cerebral Montrachet that will need a lot of time. This surpasses all my expectations from barrel. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

There's just one half-barrel of the 2019 Montrachet Grand Cru, a rich, concentrated and textural wine that evokes honeyed pears, ripe peaches, beeswax and citrus blossom. Full-bodied and muscular, it's a powerful Montrachet in the making.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)

An exchange enables Jean-Michel Chartron to offer some Montrachet. Pale colour with a light lime touch. The nose is tight and tense as yet ungiving, though on the palate the wine becomes super-sensual thereafter, rather ripe with peach and honeysuckle despite the comparative severity up front. The aftertaste delivers the persistence expected of a grand cru. Tasted: October 2021

The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Village reveals pretty aromas of white peach, spring flowers and pastry cream, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample palate that's the most pure and elegant of Chartron's communal appellations this year. It will be well worth seeking out.

Vinous (96)

The 2004 Montrachet Grand Cru is a big and very pleasant surprise. Clean and silvery in color, it has an intense, bewitching bouquet of white peach and yellow plum, touches of petrichor developing in the glass. Taut and strict yet utterly compelling, this is what a Montrachet should be about. The palate offers brilliant delineation based on a killer line of acidity, revealing hints of lemongrass and lemon peel toward the energetic finish. This is a Montrachet that just feels so “alive.” Highly recommended. Tasted at the Montrachet vertical in London.

James Suckling (99)

Vinous (98)

The 2017 Montrachet Grand Cru is slightly deeper in color. This has a gorgeous bouquet of lemon thyme, orange blossom and crushed stone, all very focused, followed by an emerging touch of mintiness. The harmonious palate is powerful, ripe and slightly vanilla-y; it just lacks a little breeding and panache. A bold and brassy yet cerebral Montrachet that will need a lot of time. This surpasses all my expectations from barrel. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.
