The 2017 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru, which is as usual, an exchange with Jean-Michel Chartron, has a crisp and precise bouquet with touches of yellow flower and crushed stone complementing the citrus fruit. The palate is very well balanced with beautifully integrated oak (one-year old rather than new), leading to a precise, almost Meursault-like finish. Superb.Inc. VAT£1,635.14 -

The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Les Clavoillons 1er Cru is very closed and unresponsive on the nose, missing a little energy compared to the more expressive Champ Gains. The palate is much better thanks to a taut line of acidity and its harmony. It offers delicate touches of citrus peel, apricot and orange pith. The 30% new oak is nicely integrated and it gently fans out on the finish. Fingers crossed that the aromatics will open once in bottle, so give it two or three years to settle.Inc. VAT£130.40 -

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet les Clavoillons 1er Cru has a primal, grapefruit and lemon zest-scented nose. The palate is taut and crisp, shows a little more terroir than the Champ Gains with a nicely composed and elegant finish. This should age well in bottle.Inc. VAT£104.39 -

The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru has a very mineral driven bouquet, fresh but sharing some of the Zen-like characteristic that I discerned on the 2019. The palate is taut and fresh with a fine bead of acidity. Very harmonious, poised with a superb saline "tang" that pops up on the finish. Still, it needs a few years to cohere in bottle but it will be worth the wait. Needs cellaring.Inc. VAT£1,327.61 -

The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet les Charmes comes from two parcels. Often one of the hidden gems from Chavy’s range, this has a delightful bouquet that displays much more delineation and mineralité compared to the Village Cru. The palate is very well balanced with a pretty, slightly peachy opening and subtle spicy notes. This is not a complex Puligny, but it is very harmonious, with impressive persistence on the brioche-tinged finish. Recommended.Inc. VAT£116.65 -

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Les Charmes has a fragrant bouquet with apricot, candle wax and light saffron aromas that are already very seductive. Hopefully it will gain a little more complexity once in bottle.Inc. VAT£125.33 -

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet les Charmes is matured in 20% new oak. It has a reserved bouquet with light grass clipping and malic scents, a touch of lime. (raised in ~15% wood). Here there is better Chablis typicity in the form of quinine, petrol, sea breeze and citrus on the floral and pear-scented nose. Reticent but complex aromas of lime blossom, hazelnut, minerals and wet stone. Drier and more austere than the Blanchots, with a juiciness verging on painful to its grapefruit zest and crushed rock flavors. Seriously mineral wine with excellent extract and chewy length. Boasts good depth but not quite the depth or dimension of the Blanchots.Inc. VAT£161.33 -

Bright medium yellow. More minerally and complex than the 2016 version, offering aromas of white peach, fresh pineapple, orange oil, minerals and spicy oak. More imploded today than the Blanchots, showing less dimension but in need of time. An element of lemony acidity contributes to the wine's rather austere impression. But firm saline minerality and acidity give this very young, clenched grand cru the spine to age gracefully. Distinctly broader-shouldered than the 2016 version.
