Vinous (88-90)
The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Enseigneres, which sees 15% new oak, has an appealing bouquet with touches of walnut and hazelnut lending a Meursault-like character. The well-balanced palate features clementine and light mango notes. Quite linear and strict, demonstrating fine precision toward the finish. This will be a "correct" Chassagne-Montrachet.Inc. VAT£1,665.40 -
Vinous (88-90)
The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Enseigneres has a fresh, well defined bouquet with gentle orange blossom and light passion fruit aromas, a little mintiness in the background. The palate is nicely balanced with good concentration from the opening, moderate acidity, harmonious with a fresh, orange rind and quince-tinged finish. A very capable Chassagne to enjoy over the next decade.Inc. VAT£162.53 -
Vinous (94+)
Pale green-tinged yellow. Lively aromas of lime, minerals and powdered stone. Among the most classic and least exotic of these 2008s but already quite showy, with lime and stone flavors given cut by bright acidity. Finishes long, bright and energetic. This is built to age.Inc. VAT£847.73 -
Wine Advocate (94-96)
The 2012 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru comes from grapes stationed at the top of the slope. It has an open, airy bouquet that reveals hints of mint and licorice as it opens up, becoming more exotic with each swirl. The palate is well-balanced, vibrant and complex, certainly evoking a more ostentatious take on the climat with an animated, spicy, mint-tinged finish that fans across the mouth and lingers long after the wine has departed. This tenacious Chevalier-Montrachet brims over with personality and substance, daring to outclass old “Monty”. And you know what? I think it does.Inc. VAT£657.72 -
(1x75cl) 2013Vinous (95)
Pale, bright yellow. Aromas of citrus fruits and rose petal. At once fine-grained and urgent, with harmonious citrussy acidity giving lift to the lemon-lime and floral flavors. Superb mineral energy partly makes up for the wine's lowish acidity (3.7 g/l). Really saturates the mouth and echoes on the finish, without leaving any impression of weight and echoes. Boudot believes that this wine will be good at every stage of its evolution.Inc. VAT£705.72 -
(1x150cl) 2014Wine Advocate (94-96)
The 2014 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru takes a few swirls of the glass to really get going, eventually developing subtle peardrop and nectarine notes that patiently wait behind the stony veneer. The palate is crisp and fresh on the entry with a fine line of acidity, brisk and lively, hints of peach and pineapple coming through on the seductive and flattering finish that has plenty of roundness. This is just gorgeous, but it needs several years in the cellar.Inc. VAT£1,792.80 -
Vinous (95-97)
The 2020 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru is step up from the Bâtard and Bienvenue this year with intense citrus fruit, crushed stone/flinty scents with razor-sharp precision. The oak is beautifully integrated. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, good concentration, hints of pineapple and grapefruit wrapped up in superb mineralité on the finish. Great length. Outstanding.Inc. VAT£1,237.73 -
(1x150cl) 2014Vinous (94+)
(one of the three barrels was new): Bright, pale straw-yellow. Rich, nuanced aromas of yellow peach, apricot, white pepper, iodine, clove and smoky oak. Wonderfully rich, deep and sweet, displaying strong extract and a powerful, chewy, rising finish. Finishes peppery, broad, saline and rich, with a tannic impression and excellent length. This wine is vinified at Baron Thénard, the source of these grapes, with barrels provided by Sauzet, then moved back to Sauzet's cellar in mid-winter. This slightly peppery, saline Montrachet does not have the distinction of the Chevalier-Montrachet but boasts terrific power and solidity.Inc. VAT£3,094.25 -
(3x75cl) 2015Vinous (94)
Bright, light yellow. Discreet nose offers scents of flowers and iodiney minerality; not at all exotic for Montrachet from a warm, sunny year. Then superripe and rich on the palate, conveying an almost oily concentration to its flavors of ripe apricot and mandarin orange enlivened by brisk citrus notes. With two grams per liter residual sugar, this wonderfully smooth, seamless wine comes across as deceptively easygoing. There's nothing austere about this beauty, which finishes with slowly mounting length.Inc. VAT£3,893.16 -
Burghound (94)
This is sufficiently reduced that the nose is tough to properly assess. The broader-shouldered flavors possess an almost painful intensity with plenty of muscle and mouth coating sap that manages to adequately buffer the slightly warm and youthfully awkward finish. I suspect that this will ultimately come together with 5-ish or so years of bottle age but it's not clear that it will ultimately surpass either the Bâtard or the Chevalier.Inc. VAT£1,272.12 -

4 barrels. They supply their own barrels. Not racked yet. A tiny bit more colour, a little touch of coconut from the wood. Excellent density on the palate, seamless, thoroughly Montrachet worthy. Lingers deliciously on the palate, picked at a very good ripeness and with an excellent balance between depth and elegance.Inc. VAT£1,074.12 -
Burghound (95-98)
Don't Miss! This is also aromatically restrained and requires considerable swirling to coax the aromas of layered and cool spicy essence of pear, apple, white peach and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume and mid-palate density to the borderline massive flavors that also possess a highly seductive texture while displaying stunningly good length on the balanced and mouth coating finish. As is often the case with this wine, it will need time to develop better depth, but the track record is so good that it is all but guaranteed to do so.Inc. VAT£1,287.72 -

Mid lemon yellow. This has the weight which should have. The nose does indeed speak of Montrachet with a measured opulence. The weight on the palate transcends those which have gone before, there is a grip from the barrel and a little toast (a new Chassin barrel and one year old François Frères). Very long and relatively fine finish. Extremely good. Tasted: October 2021Inc. VAT£1,536.12 -

Don't Miss! A wonderfully spicy nose combines notes of exotic tea and wood with a plethora of floral elements and white peach scents. There is even better volume as well as size, weight and density to the muscular and super-compact big-bodied flavors that display huge length on the borderline tannic finish. While most competent examples of Montrachet clearly need extended cellaring but this is very definitely a 'buy and forget you own it' wine that should be stunningly good in time.Inc. VAT£1,345.32 -

A pure clear lemon colour. The extra weight of Montrachet is indeed apparent on the nose. Ripe pears. Perhaps this is a little less in the Sauzet style, not being from their own fruit, but it is impressive. The weight on the palate is profound, with certainly ripe fruit but also a point of minerality right in the middle, and good acidity. Almost a wine to eat rather than drink. It does indeed have the requisite very long finish. Drink from 2032-2045. Tasted: October 2023.Inc. VAT£1,073.60 -

The 2023 Montrachet Grand Cru showed a little more cloudiness in the glass due to the lees (of course, they will disappear once racked). Perhaps the nose is a little primal as a result—it's not as complete as the Bâtard or the Bienvenues. The palate is more indicative of where this Monty will be heading. It has intense, immense weight with an almost pixelated mineral-driven finish. This is going to be a great Montrachet, but it might take longer to reveal its true identity. Only six barrels were produced this year.Inc. VAT£3,431.16 -

The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Canet unfurls in the glass with a superb bouquet of citrus oil, crisp green apple, wheat toast, freshly baked bread and mandarin, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and complete palate that's deep and layered, underpinned by incisive acids and concluding with a long, mineral finish. It's hard to choose between this and the more muscular, introverted Combottes, but both are worth a special effort to seek out.Inc. VAT£341.60 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (94)
The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Champ Canet 1er Cru has an understated, slightly conservative bouquet that gradually unfolds with aeration: green apple, damp moss and crushed stone scents. Very appealing. The palate is fresh and vibrant on the entry with superb weight and depth counterbalanced by a citric line of acidity. Lightly spiced with hints of stem ginger, this fans out beautifully towards the finish. This showed potential from barrel and it seems to have exceeded that. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.Inc. A surprising degree of green to the colour. A light but fine bouquet, all quite discreet, then rather more fruit intensity on the palate, quite linear but not without a little flesh on the bones. Vestiges of post-bottling sulfur don't completely mask the otherwise elegant citrus, white pear and acacia blossom aromas. The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet les Combettes 1er Cru comes from a single parcel of vines that abuts the Meursault Charmes of Comtes Lafon over the border. It has a strict bouquet of well defined crushed stone aromas, hints of orange blossom surfacing with time in the glass. The palate is well balanced with a lightly spiced opening. Impressive weight in the mouth here. The pithy, stone fruit finish leaves a dash of ginger on the aftertaste. This is an excellent Les Combettes.Inc. VAT£1,734.72 -

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Les Combettes 1er Cru has a tightly wound bouquet, less expressive than the other cuvées, but a few swirls reveal intense mineral-driven malic fruit. Like the aromatics, the palate is beautifully defined and reminds me of Domaine Leflaive in style. The spiciness hits the back palate, hints of lemongrass linger in the mouth after this Les Combettes has departed. Classy but compact at the moment, so do not begrudge cellaring this for 3-5 years.Inc. VAT£1,779.49 -

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes is excellent, offering up aromas of stone fruits, pear, pastry cream, white flowers and fresh croissants, followed by a full-bodied, rich and textural palate, with a broad attack that segues into a layered, multidimensional palate. Powerful and broad shouldered, but nicely balanced, this is a compelling wine from Sauzet.Inc. VAT£217.32
