Now in tank, being fined. Pale lemon colour. Perfumed nose with a little sandalwood. Fresh plums, lots of energy, light youthful bitterness which will come out with the fining, very long finish for this level of appellation. Picked at the end after a few days gap. Tasted: December 2021

Clear pale lemon. The bouquet offers a slightly more chiselled note, though still delivering white orchard fruit. Crisp and concentrated on the palate, with a generous build-up of fruit and a long aftertaste. Drink from 2028-2035.

Pale lemon colour. An attractive, fresher nose, some fresh herbal notes on a white limestone base, nothing yellow here. Slightly more austere as befits Blagny. Good tension, and pleasing persistence. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted Oct 2024.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2012 tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Meursault 1er Cru les Genevrières has a terse, stony and stoic nose that demands encouragement. Almost Chablis-like but very well focused. The palate is fresh and crisp on the entry, but it needed the weight to back up this reserved linear style. Still, you can sit back and admire the saline finish that feels long in the mouth.

Vinous (93)

Pale bright yellow. Pear, apple and stone on the nose. Juicy and intense on the palate, showing lovely energy and minerality. A major step up in intensity and length from the Charmes, displaying lovely definition and a saline quality. Offers a rather refined texture, with its harmonious acidity well supported by flesh. Finishes with good lingering fruit and stone flavors.

Vinous (92+)

Orange zest and a positive balsamic hint on the aromatic nose. Sweet and plush but dry; this delivers the pliancy of a sunny vintage on entry, then turns more lemony and minerally on the back half. The finish boasts excellent texture and stony grip, calling for patience. The crop level was just 30 hectoliters per hectare, as there was more hail here than in Perrières.

Vinous (92-94)

The 2019 Meursault Genevrières 1er Cru is much more closed on the nose compared to the Les Charmes-Dessus, offering scents of lemon curd, patisserie, clementines and linseed oil. Quite complex but tightly wound. The palate is well balanced with impressive depth. There is a lot of concentration and richness here, though the acidity effortlessly counterbalances this. Ginger and light rhubarb notes toward the long finish complete an excellent Genevrières.

The palate is well balanced with. a fine bead of acidity, fresh and poised, quite spicy with lemongrass notes lending it an almost Asian twist on the finish. For some reason, I’m drinking this with some Pad Thai! Superb.

Vinous - Neal Martin (93)

The 2021 Meursault Genevrières 1er Cru has a powerful Charmes-like bouquet, leaning towards a richer style with more yellow fruit compared to Benjamin Leroux's own Genevrières. Yet it retains delineation. The palate is vibrant and quite intense with plenty going on in this Meursault, culminating in a spicy and energetic finish. Again, this exhibits fine sapidity and urges you back for another sip. Superb. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)

Pale colour with a light green tint. This is more detailed but less intense on the nose, characteristics which continue on the palate. Delightful nuances, a good thread of ripe acidity, some ripe lemon notes towards the back of the palate. A wine that needs more reflection than the Charmes, but delivers. Only the style, not the quality separates them. Very long finish. Drink from 2028-2037.

The 2018 Meursault Perrières 1er Cru comes from two parcels, 20% in Perrières-Dessus planted in 1955 and another part, 80% of the parcel, planted back in 1938. It has a very intense bouquet, like the Genevrières, featuring walnut, linseed oil and light white peach aromas. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. As Perrières should be, this is taut, linear and powerful, with hints of fresh grapefruit, tangerine and peach appearing toward the persistent finish. A superb Perrières, but does it possess the charm of the Genevrières?

Vinous (92-94)

The 2019 Meursault Perrières 1er Cru has a tight, focused nose of gunflint and gravel, expressing this noble vineyard extremely well in the sense that it could not be from anywhere else. The palate is well balanced with touches of orange peel, ginger and light savory notes on the entry. Quite a phenolically driven Perrières, it has wonderful length, even if it does not quite have the clinical precision of, say, Dominique Lafon’s own Perrières. Still, this is a well-crafted, quite sublime Meursault. 

Vinous (92-94)

The 2019 Meursault Les Charmes-Dessus 1er Cru has a slightly richer bouquet compared to Bouzereau’s other cuvées, presenting dried honey and orange pith scents plus honeysuckle and beeswax. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Harmonious and full of energy. The vibrant citrus/lime finish fans out wonderfully and the spicy aftertaste is one of the longest I have found on this particular cuvée. Superb. 

Vinous (88-90)

(as with the Bourgogne Blanc, half of this wine is aging in 500-liter barrels): Bright yellow. Classic Meursault nose combines peach, fresh apricot, spices and hazelnut. Yellow fruit flavors are complicated by saline soil tones and nicely framed by ripe acidity. A bit firmer on the finish than the Bourgogne Blanc but also has more punch. (Compared to this wine, the fruit was a bit too ripe in the '16, according to Jean-Baptiste Bouzereau.)

The 2018 Meursault Les Grands Charrons, half matured in 500-liter barrels with 20% new oak, has an attractive bouquet of almond, quince and light pressed white flower aromas, plus a light buttery note in the background. The palate is taut and delineated on the entry, featuring lovely orange zest and tangerine notes, and becomes more lime-driven toward the finish, leaving noisettes on the aftertaste. Excellent.

Vinous (89-91)

The 2019 Meursault Les Grands Charrons, also taken from tank, has a well-defined bouquet of citrus fruit infused with touches of yellow flower; hints of apricot blossom emerge with time. The palate is well balanced with a brisk, citrus- and lime-tinged entry. Taut at the moment, but there is palpable energy here, and a persistent, ginger-infused finish. Excellent. 

Vinous (90-92)

The 2020 Meursault Les Grands Charrons is raised half in demi-muids and half in traditional Burgundy barrels with around 20% new oak. This is a little resinous on the nose, touches of beeswax and honeysuckle, needing a little coaxing from the glass. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, taut and fresh, just the right amount of bitterness with stem ginger towards the spicy finish. Lovely.

The 2022 Meursault Les Grands Charrons, matured in 20% new oak, has quite an engaging bouquet, with hints of wild fennel and mint infusing citrus fruit. Impressive delineation. The palate is well-balanced with a silver bead of acidity. Linear in style, there is no peacock's tail towards the finish, but plenty of spiciness, a touch of Szechuan pepper leaving the mouth tingling on the aftertaste. Recommended.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-92)

Fine pale colour, slightly more savoury on the nose eschewing the plumpness of the first Bourgogne. Very nicely balanced, a bit more white fruit here than the riper yellow notes, with a long finish with an agreeable slightly creamy texture. Planting dates if you are interested: 1992/1982/1960/1947. Drink from 2027-2030. Tasted Oct 2024.
