Fresh colour, lemon and lime, not massive at all in bouquet but I am learning not to expect that chez Sauzet. A broad beamed intensity on the palate, this almost seems uncouth after the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, but it still has its finesse. A light oatmeal touch from young (but not new) wood, and a great deal in reserve. A fine and impressive wine, though unlike in most cellars in 2022, I am leaning towards the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet today. But this will definitely work! Drink from 2030-2040. Its bouquet contains crushed limestone and flinty scents intertwined with Granny Smith and sea spray notes. The palate is supremely well balanced with real depth and tension throughout. Fine pale primrose colour, a nose of both depth and elegance. A suggestion of power in restraint. The palate delivers that burst of energy in harmony with the quintessential grace of Bienvenues. The fruit is on the fresher side yet with a texture that denotes ripeness. It is very persistent, and shows its complexity through the nuances, the wavelets of fresh but ripe yellow fruit which reappear at the finish. Don't Miss! An overtly floral-suffused nose features notes of lilac, carnation and acacia blossom that are trimmed in spice, citrus rind and soft wood wisps. The strikingly pure and beautifully defined larger-bodied flavors are not super-dense but I very much like the texture, all wrapped in a clean, bone-dry and compact finish that flashes plenty of focused power. This could also use a bit more depth but that shouldn't be an issue. As an aside, for those readers who were Sauzet fans 25-ish years ago, the '21 Bâtard reminds me quite a bit of the 1993, which is one of Sauzet's all-time great vintages.Inc. VAT£882.25 -

(25% new oak): Pale yellow color. Deeper and riper on the nose than the Bienvenues, offering scents of peach, spices, flint and menthol. Also fatter and sweeter than the Bienvenues, but at the same time saline and savory. This very rich wine is surprisingly harmonious today but has the reserves to age for a long time. With its almost tannic finish, this impressive Batard shut down in the glass. In Bond£701.03 -

The 2018 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru hails from a small parcel just below the Marquis de Laguiche's Montrachet holdings, and it's also performing beautifully. Offering up a lovely bouquet of pear, orange oil, white flowers and clear honey that's framed by a deft touch of oak, the wine is full-bodied, multidimensional and complete, with a deep and layered core, lively acids and a long, expansive finish. In Bond£637.00 -

Glowing primrose. Immediately a nose of majesty, more demonstrative than the Bienvenues, a substantial block of pure deep white fruit, significantly more weight and power in a chiselled white block. It really depends on what you want between these two. Time is needed to be sure that the power of the Bâtard will deliver a wine to equal the grace of the Bienvenues. In Bond£665.00 -

Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,478.35 -

The 2023 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a little more "control" compared with the Bienvenues. Its bouquet contains crushed limestone and flinty scents intertwined with Granny Smith and sea spray notes. The palate is supremely well balanced with real depth and tension throughout. It's intense and perfectly spiced, with a sense of gravitas on the finish that lingers long in the mouth. This is a very capable Bâtard-Montrachet that will give 20 years of pleasure. In Bond£1,950.00 -

From the domaine’s oldest vines, this is really lovely. In Bond£629.00 -

As an aside, for those readers who were Sauzet fans 25-ish years ago, the '21 Bâtard reminds me quite a bit of the 1993, which is one of Sauzet's all-time great vintages. In Bond£732.00 -

A mix from below Puligny and Meursault. Very pale in colour. A slightly waxy note to the nose, not quite in place. All in white fruit with a certain amount of nuance, indeed this continues extremely well through to the back of the palate, very appetising. Just the bouquet to put in place.
