Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

The 2020 Mâcon-Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette has a wonderful bouquet with fine delineation and touches of crushed rock filtering through the malic fruit. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Somehow playful, this is a joyful Mâconnais wine with a long saline finish. Closure: Diam.Inc. VAT£116.27 -
Burghound (89)
Here the nose is dominated by smoky reduction and only hints of citrus rind are perceptible so give this some air first. The sleek, precise and intense middle weight flavors brim with minerality that adds a sense of lift to the highly refreshing, very dry and notably more complex finale. This is excellent for what it is and warmly recommended.Inc. VAT£100.49 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (91)
The 2023 Mâcon-Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette has one of the best aromatics of the range: crushed stone, sea cave and light Granny Smith scents with good focus. The palate is well balanced with a crisp entry. This has fine weight and density but is more backward and perhaps befits a couple of years in bottle.Inc. VAT£99.47 -
Burghound (88)
An even fresher nose freely offers up its array of green apple, plenty of citrus elements and a hint of mineral reduction. The racy, detailed and sleek medium weight flavors are wonderfully refreshing but not quite as complex on the stony, bone-dry and lightly austere finale. A year or two of cellaring should help to add depth.Inc. VAT£93.56 -
(12x75cl) 2022Burghound (89)
(mostly from Prissé). This is the first wine to display even subtle wood influence on the smoky white orchard fruit and more discreet citrus-infused nose. There is more volume if perhaps slightly less delineation to the medium-bodied flavors that possess first-rate balance on the clean, long and more complex finale. Fine quality here.Inc. VAT£640.00 -
(6x150cl) 2016Wine Advocate (90)
The 2016 Viré-Clessé wafts from the glass with notes of musky peach and dried white flowers, framed by sublet reduction. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, tense and racy, with good depth at the core and an attractive sense of completeness. It will need some time in the cellar to unwind after bottling, but it's an elegant, vibrant interpretation of the appellation that ranks as one of Lafon's best cuvées this year.Inc. VAT£439.30 -
(12x75cl) 2022Burghound (90)
A more restrained nose is comprised by aromas of white peach, citrus confit and acacia blossom. There is excellent density to the succulent and saliva-inducing middle weight flavors that possess an appealing underlying tension while exhibiting a lovely salinity on the solidly persistent, youthfully austere and satisfying complex finish. This too offers fine quality.Inc. VAT£622.18 -

From vines in Corgoloin, the 2017 Côte de Nuits-Villages unfurls in the glass with a lovely bouquet of cherries, dark berries, rose petals, orange rind and cedar. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated for the vintage, with a fleshy core of fruit, finer-grained tannins than those found in the domaine's bottlings from the Hautes Côtes, and juicy balancing acids, concluding with an elegantly chalky finish. This is showing very well and is worth seeking out.Inc. VAT£625.61 -

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)
This comes from the Echezeaux du Dessus, a plot purchased in the 1960s which must have been almost immediately replanted as the vines are now 50 years old. 30% whole bunch vinification and 70% of the cuvée is in new wood but we tasted from a one year old barrel. Equally dense purple in colour. Haunting qualities with real depth. Firm and forceful, some fine-grained tannins, covered with a wealth of rich red fruit including some strawberries.Inc. Gilles Jayer's 2013 Bourgogne-Hautes Côtes de Beaune is a jewel of a wine within its category. Crushed berries, flowers and chalky notes are all nicely delineated in a lifted, precise Burgundy endowed with lovely energy and fine balance. The Côtes de Beaune can at times be a bit rustic, but the 2013 looks to have an extra level of sophistication to it.Inc. VAT£457.00 -
Burghound (86-88)
Moderate reduction knocks down the fruit though there is good vibrancy and detail to the delicious flavors that exude a refreshing salinity on the focused and lingering finish. This is carrying enough structure to suggest that it will need a year or two to unwind and develop better depth.Inc. VAT£414.41 -

Offering up aromas of cherries and cassis, deftly framed by a touch of new oak, the 2018 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune is medium to full-bodied, deep and fleshy, with a rich core of fruit, powdery tannins and lively acids. Still primary and youthful, it had yet to be bottled when I tasted it.Inc. VAT£434.98 -

One of Burgundy's great under the radar wines Jayer's Bourgogne-Hautes Côtes de Nuits is once again terrific in 2013. Plum, red cherry, menthol, spice and violets meld together in a juicy, pliant Burgundy that over delivers. Beautifully layered in the glass, the 2013 will drink well upon release and for another decade or so beyond that.Inc. VAT£523.00 -

A pretty and very fresh nose combines notes of both red and dark cherry with an airy array of floral nuances. Once again there is good intensity and vibrancy to the slightly bigger and richer flavors that possess a bit better depth and persistence on the mildly more structured finale. This is very good for its level and is worth considering provided you can allow it at least a few years of cellar time.Inc. VAT£434.98 -

The 2011 Nuits St. Georges Les Hauts Porrets is beautifully centered focused. Here it is the wine's density and power that stand out most. Hints of leather, plum, mint and sweet spices add complexity in an impeccable, utterly delicious Burgundy. It's all there in the 2011 Les Hauts Porrets.Inc. VAT£731.60 -
Vinous (90-93)
Remarkably vivid in the glass, the 2012 Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Hauts Porrets is super-impressive. Black cherries, menthol and spices are some of the many notes that come alive in an outrageously beautiful Burgundy loaded with tons of potential. I can't wait to taste this from bottle.Inc. Bright dark red. Brisk, tight nose hints at dark fruits and minerals. In a juicy but very dry style, and distinctly imploded today. This tannic, slightly hard-edged wine is tough going. A puzzling showing: my score gives it the benefit of some doubt.Inc. VAT£716.00 -
Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-93)
Bright, dark ruby-red. Very pure, vibrant aromas of kirsch, blackberry, licorice and cocoa powder. Strongly mineral-driven on the palate but not aggressive, with concentrated dark fruit and saline flavors complemented but not overshadowed by the 100% oak. Finishes with fine-grained tannins and lovely floral persistence. Gilles Jayer told me that this climat on thin soil over rock belongs entirely to him and to Domaine Machard de Gramont and really merits premier cru classification. My notes and scores on this cuvée over the past 15 to 20 years suggest that he's right.Inc. VAT£788.00 -
