Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Vinous (96-98)
The 2017 Richebourg Grand Cru has a showstopping, persistent bouquet of intense blackberry, sous-bois and crushed stone. The supremely well-balanced palate offers filigreed tannin, wonderful mineralité and an otherworldly-long finish. One of the most elegant Richebourgs that I have tasted. Best Richebourg in show this year? Quite possibly. Six barrels produced.Inc. VAT£3,843.96 -
Burghound (97)
As it was from barrel, the cool, restrained and even more layered nose requires considerable swirling to progressively coax the exuberantly spicy aromas of red and blue pinot fruit that is liberally laced with a variety of floral elements to reveal themselves. There is excellent volume and richness to the sleek and refined yet powerful flavors that brim with both minerality and dry extract that helps to buffer the firm but not rigid tannic spine shaping the strikingly long and linear finish. This is brilliant but note well that like the 2019 version, it's going to require extended cellaring to realize its full, and considerable, potential.Inc. VAT£1,287.86 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)
A glowing crimson purple. A certain nobility to the nose. A brilliant combination of hedonism and precision, the expressive dense floral notes, waves of perfectly ripe red fruit, and that’s just the bouquet. Suave, sweetly fruited, nuanced, yet never losing site of the grace and the depth. Caresses all parts. Seamless finish with perfect acid and tannin balance. Drink from 2034-2045+. Tasted: November 2023.Inc. VAT£1,312.79 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (96-98)
The 2023 Richebourg Grand Cru has a typical nose for this vineyard, backward and a little stern at first. Its tightly wound redcurrant, cranberry and black plum fruit notes become more open with acquaintance. Apparently, it was very open the previous day, but this is in a mood! The palate is medium-bodied with fine structure and a beguiling sense of symmetry from start to finish. This might be the most elegant Richebourg that I have encountered from Grivot at this stage. It's very poised with an extremely long aftertaste. This will require serious cellaring.Inc. VAT£2,038.13 -
Inc. VAT£131.33 -
Vinous (93-95)
The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru has an inviting and quite sensual bouquet of crushed ripe strawberries, cranberry, touches of cassis and violet, showing good intensity. The palate is intense on the entry. No hanging about here; just penetrating spicy black fruit with a satin-like texture and a vibrant sorbet-like finish that leaves the mouth tingling with pleasure. Superb.Inc. VAT£1,370.52 -
(12x75cl) 1997Vinous (86)
Slightly fuller red. Spicy redcurrant, plum and a floral note on the nose. At once softer and less sweet than the '97 Grivot Nuits-Saint-Georges Charmois, but also a bit more diffuse. And yet this seems less evolved, less forthcoming today. Here the tannins are silkier, though.Inc. VAT£2,867.38 -
Vinous (91-93)
The 2011 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brulées is distinguished by its gorgeous inner intensity and a solid core of expressive red fruit. Firm, powerful, yet also impeccable refined, the Brulées needs a few years to open up. The balance of fruit and tannin is impeccable. At times, the Brulées is at times a bit wild in its aromas and flavors, but texturally it is more polished. There is no shortage of personality here.Inc. VAT£311.99 -
Vinous (93-95)
The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru has a southern orientation, but Mathilde Grivot was surprised that it only reached 13.0° alcohol; this was due, she believes, to the rain before the harvest. It takes a little time to cohere in the glass. After a couple of minutes, it offers lovely red and black fruit intermingling with black truffle and damp earthy/woodland aromas, delicate and refined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, precise and focused. Not a Aux Brûlées of substance and density, but rather one of precision and focus. Excellent.Inc. VAT£1,815.49 -
Vinous (93-95)
The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru has an exquisitely-delineated bouquet with black plum and raspberry fruit that unfold with each swirl of the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly flinty opening, compact, quite peppery with a deepening and rather grippy finish. There is something sultry about this Aux Brûlées, a Premier Cru that will repay 4-5 years in the cellar.Inc. VAT£798.40 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (95-97)
The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru has a wonderful, expressive bouquet with shimmering red berry fruit, white flowers and hints of blood orange. Very harmonious and poised. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins. It’s not powerful but tensile with an almost crystalline finish fanning out effortlessly. Superb.Inc. VAT£916.75 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (95-97)
The 2023 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru is a little taciturn at first, but it only takes a little aeration to reveal brambly red fruit, briar, black pepper and light graphite scents. This is quite complex and, like Grivot's other 2023s, very well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a pleasing crunchy texture on the entry. One of the more peppery Vosne-Romanées, again, you could be deceived into thinking there were stems in blend when there are none. It sashays toward a very harmonious finish. This is superb.Inc. VAT£882.40 -
Vinous (91-94)
Full ruby-red. Very primary, floral aromas of crushed dark berries and violet. Supple and densely packed but also tangy and penetrating. Captivating, complex cassis and black cherry inner-mouth perfume. Has the firm structure of the vintage without being hard. Finishes quite long and bright and solidly tannic. Should be a vin de garde. Grivot says a few of his '98 cuvées, including this one, should exceed his excellent '96s in complexity and volume.Inc. VAT£1,570.40 -
(12x75cl) 2007Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (89-92)
Bright medium red. Currant, plum and raspberry aromas are complicated by game and flowers. A bit tighter and more gripping than the Boudots; less lush today but showing good juicy intensity and definition of flavor and enticing minerality. Finishes fresh, firm and persistent.Inc. VAT£2,510.20 -
(6x75cl) 2008Wine Advocate (93)
The 2008 Vosne-Romanee Les Beaux Monts is fresh, vibrant and beautifully explosive. The rich, layered fruit finds a fabulous counterpoint in the nuanced aromatics and chiseled finish. This is a beautiful, complete wine with a very bright future. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028.Inc. VAT£1,954.84 -
(1x75cl) 2009Wine Advocate (94+)
The 2009 Vosne-Romanee Les Beaux Monts is fabulous. Waves of fruit jump from the glass. The Beaux-Monts impresses for its textural depth and richness. There is an intense minerality to the fruit that gives the wine much of its power. The Beaux-Monts is firing on all cylinders today. A crescendo of fruit saturates the palate on the finish. This is another headspinning 2009 from Grivot. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029.Inc. VAT£492.25 -
Vinous (94)
The 2011 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts 1er Cru has a generous and detailed bouquet with ample dark cherry, raspberry and subtle balsamic notes, later some lovely scents of morels and tobacco. It feels mercurial but utterly absorbing. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, harmonious and demonstrating much more vigor than its peers. This Premier Cru is bounding with energy and focus with a detailed, mineral-driven finish that is a pure joy. Superb. Tasted at Flint Wines Burgundy 2011 tasting.Inc. VAT£500.39 -
(6x75cl) 2013Wine Advocate (92+)
Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts has a rather leafy bouquet, perhaps some stem addition here, nicely defined with bay leaf and thyme. It seems to grow in stature in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, moderate acidity but it has clearly shut down towards the finish and feels static. There is a very impressive wine here, however it will need 4-5 years before it entertains the idea of drinkability. Tasted September 2016.Inc. VAT£1,497.49 -
Vinous (95)
The 2015 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts 1er Cru has a wonderful, expressive bouquet, once you get past just a touch of reduction. Black cherries, raspberry and crushed stone all vie for attention, and the oak is very nicely integrated. The palate is sweet and generous on the entry, and super-fine tannins frame a mineral-driven, supremely well focused finish that lingers in the mouth. Top class. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.Inc. VAT£303.59 -
(6x75cl) 2017Vinous (93)
The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts 1er Cru presents a pure, well-defined nose offering sous-bois character and good focus. The palate is well balanced, nicely structured, not amazingly complex but strict, with a fresh, spicy finish that lingers. This needs time to resolve, but it should come through nicely. A little introverted, so be patient... this is Grivot, after all. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.Inc. VAT£1,176.04 -
Decanter (95)
Always one of Etienne and Mathilde Grivot's stand-out Premier Cru reds, this is not the most immediate of their cuvées at a young age, often displaying some grip and tannic backbone as well as a hint of meaty reduction, but the fruit concentration and depth is remarkable here, supported by chalky minerality and scented 30% new wood. Wonderfully patrician and well-structured.Inc. VAT£814.38 -

Vinous (92-94)
The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Rouges 1er Cru has "grown up a lot over the last 10 years," according to Etienne Grivot. It is one of the more reticent cuvées on the nose this year, reluctantly unfolding to reveal more tertiary red berry fruit laced with garrigue and iodine. Good complexity, but these aromatics will need time to open. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, lithe tannins. Quite compact at the moment, this has good grip and a saline, marine-influenced finish that fans out beautifully. A succinct, understated Les Rouge that will give 20-plus years of pleasure.Inc. VAT£826.32 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)
The 2023 Vosne-Romanée Les Rouges 1er Cru is a little riper and richer on the nose than the Les Chaumes. Its bouquet features finely delineated wild strawberry and raspberry aromas with just hints of kirsch and blackcurrant leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins. Taut and fresh, this has just the right amount of bitterness with a dash of black pepper toward the finish. Give this three or four years in bottle because there is plenty of substance and time will temper its precocity.Inc. VAT£763.49 -
Burghound (91-93)
A restrained but cool and elegant nose reflects pretty spice, floral and red berry scents. The beautifully textured if not especially dense middle weight flavors flash evident minerality on the dusty, youthfully austere and complex finale that is both balanced and persistent. This is lovely and understated.Inc. VAT£1,043.60 -
(12x75cl) 2007Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-93)
Good full red. Sweet aromas of black cherry and minerals. Rich, lush and deep, with a sappy minerality and superb breadth. The palate-coating finish is long and vibrant. Boasts grand cru texture in the context of the vintage.Inc. VAT£2,885.38 -
(6x75cl) 2011Vinous (92-94)
A dark, powerful Burgundy, the 2011 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots is another wine deeply marked by site. Black fruit, smoke, tar, incense and scorched earth all come together in this decidedly masculine, brooding wine. Ideally, the 2011 is best cellared for at least a few years, but it will always remain full-bodied and intense.Inc. VAT£2,044.69 -
Wine Advocate (95-97)
The 2015 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots has an exquisite bouquet, extremely pure with scents of redcurrant, blueberry, violets, cola and wet limestone. Like the 2015 Les Beaux Monts, there is wondrous focus and precision here. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin. This is full of energy and tension, with a killer line of acidity and wonderful structure and precision towards the mineral-rich finish. It will require several years in bottle, but it has the substance and complexity to repay patience.Inc. VAT£389.99 -
Decanter (95)
Always one of my favourite Vosne premiers crus from Mathilde and Etienne Grivot, this textured, stylish, deftly oaked red has all the most appealing features of the 2017 vintage, with lots of sumptuous, summer-pudding fruit, filigree tannins and a foundation of acidity. It's deceptively forward, as this has the minerality and focus to age.Inc. VAT£1,455.49 -
Vinous (93-95)
The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru perhaps has the most mineral-driven bouquet of Grivot’s Premier Crus: graphite-infused red fruit, touches of forest floor, very precise and detailed. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-sculpted tannins. There is unerring symmetry here and whilst it may miss a bit of substance on the finish, this may well be addressed by the time it finishes its élevage. Superb.Inc. VAT£816.40
