Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Vinous (91-93)
The 2021 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru has a taut and fresh bouquet with hints of wild peach and yellow plum, underlying flinty aromas surfacing with aeration yet maintains a sense of strictness. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity - touches of orange rind coming through yet it just comes to a halt abruptly on the finish. Give it two or three years in bottle.Inc. (6x75cl) 2023Burghound (86-89)
There is a touch of phenolic character (think olive oil nuances) lurking in the background of the ripe aromas of pear, apple and citrus confit with just enough typicity to be interesting. There is better volume to the slightly richer medium weight flavors that possess a seductive mouthfeel and an equally refreshing finish that, by contrast, comes up somewhat short. That may well change before it’s bottled but that is to be seen.Inc. VAT£125.09 -

(6x75cl) 2022Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)
Some light green reflections in the primrose yellow colour. A stricter nose, perhaps a touch of sulphur. This may also appear more backward coming after the Charmes. Then a vast wealth of fruit on the palate and now we see the real wine. It maintains the herbal note I associate with Genevrières, alongside golden fruit at a perfect degree of ripeness. The fruit and the acidity weave in and out of each other. I would not want the fruit to be riper but it is full of charm as it stands, and kept in place by the precision of the structure. Very fine. Drink from 2029-2037.Inc. VAT£516.72 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)
Mid yellow, with a really beautiful succulent nose, picked at perfect ripeness, and not hiding the delicacy and detail of fine Genevrières. Some lime, some verbena, delicate fresh apples, back to the lime blossom, then a really fine boned framework on the palate. Tingles the tastebuds in the most delicious way. A beautifully crafted 2023 Genevrières. Drink from 2029-2037. Tasted Oct 2024.Inc. VAT£598.32 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)
Mid lemon yellow. The bouquet has a little softer orchard fruit compared to the Bourgogne, and is very true to its Meursault roots. The white fruit continues on the palate and is now joined by a saline note, while the ripe apples give an immediate appeal. There are little waves of flavour towards the back of the palate. Once again the aftertaste is fine, precise and thoroughly promising. Drink from 2027-2032.Inc. VAT£423.20 -

A bouquet of ripe cherry, blackcurrant and rich soil, framed by new wood, precedes an elegant, full-bodied and expansive wine with a detailed, fine-grained chassis of rich tannin, superb mid-palate depth, and an energy and sappiness to its core of fruit that bodes well for the long term. Like the Latricières, this may flesh out more during élevage, but it is already appreciably more integrated and complete.Inc. VAT£2,946.72 -

A rich purple in colour. The bouquet does not deliver much as yet but the fruit is so seductive at the front of the palate, though still very unresolved further back with fresher tannins which still need time to integrate. I expect the 2022 Chambertin to have excellent keeping qualities. Drink from 2035-2045+. Tasted: November 2023.Inc. VAT£2,531.54 -

Vinous - Neal Martin (93)
The 2021 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru has a strict, stony and quite austere nose in the positive sense of that word. There is fruit here—damsons—yet it is tightly coiled and will require time to unfold. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. Very well-judged acidity, focused with neatly integrated oak, builds in the mouth towards a seductive but classical finish with hints of cracked black pepper and clove that linger on the aftertaste. Atypical for the vintage insofar as it seems to come from a warmer season. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.Inc. VAT£3,159.89 -

The 2017 Pommard Clos Blanc 1er Cru has a clean, precise bouquet of blackberry, briary and wild hedgerow scents, the oak nicely integrated. It’s quite reduced at present, though that should blow off. The palate is medium-bodied and fleshy, with supple tannins and touches of white pepper, clove and Chinese five-spice, leading to a harmonious and quite powerful finish. Yes, a bit brutish, but it should improve with bottle age. Closure is Diam 5. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.Inc. VAT£613.49 -

The 2015 Pommard Les Perrières has quite a rich bouquet with touches of fig infusing the kirsch and cassis aromas.
