The 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru has quite a meaty nose, featuring plenty of brambly red fruit, desiccated orange peel and dried herbs. The palate is medium-bodied with a sorbet-fresh entry. This is a more zesty Chambertin, lively and even a little tart toward the finish. Does it convey the substance of this noble vineyard? I’m not convinced, and that is perhaps reflective of the vintage, yet after 15 minutes it seems to gain extra layers of complexity, and it's only then you realize that this is the real deal. It loses a bit of finesse and complexity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, lightly spiced, quite muscular in style with a flattering finish. This is a more zesty Chambertin, lively and even a little tart toward the finish. Does it convey the substance of this noble vineyard? I’m not convinced, and that is perhaps reflective of the vintage, yet after 15 minutes it seems to gain extra layers of complexity, and it's only then you realize that this is the real deal. It loses a bit of finesse and complexity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, lightly spiced, quite muscular in style with a flattering finish. The 2015 Charmes-Chambertin is a soft-open knit wine with mid-weight structure and good overall persistence. This is the only wine in the range I tasted from tank. Perhaps for that reason, the Charmes is a bit reticent. It will be interesting to see if the wine gains more volume.
