Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Wine Advocate (88+)Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, the 2014 St Aubin 1er Cru Clos de la Chateniere from Domaine Hubert & Olivier Lamy was not as clean on the nose as its peers, slightly cheesy at first and then light mothball scents. The palate is fresh on the entry with a pretty kiwi fruit and Cornice pear opening; but it never achieves the same level of tension and focus as other premier crus from the appellation, and it seems to drift on the finish. This may well be entering a dumb phase, and it may well re-find the promise it demonstrated from barrel, hence my plus sign. |

Vinous (92)The 2015 Saint-Aubin Clos de la Chatenière 1er Cru has a crisp, earthy, almost zen bouquet that is more like a 2014 than a 2015. I appreciate the terroir expression here - you can sense the wine’s birthplace coming through with aeration. The nuanced palate is very well balanced and precise in style, displaying a fine bead of acidity and a gorgeous, lightly spiced, edgy, sappy finish that urges you back for another sip. Outstanding for the vintage. Highly recommended. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. (DIAM 10 closure) |

Vinous (87-89)Pale yellow. Musky aromas of ripe apple, orange zest and toast; in a slightly oxidative phase. Fat and rich on the palate for a wine with 12.8% alcohol, with peach and apple flavors conveying a low-acid impression. A touch bitter on the finish. These vines on hard calcaire and friable clay produce small yellow grapes that ripen quickly at the end--and especially in 2015, according to Lamy. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (89)The 2022 Saint-Aubin Clos de Meix 1er Cru comes from hard limestone soils. It has hints of lemon rind, wet stone and flint on the correct and quite penetrating nose. Wine Advocate (94-96)Another tour de force from Lamy is the 2018 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Derrière Chez Edouard Haut Densité, a magical wine that unwinds in the glass with notes of crisp Anjou pear, white flowers, citrus oil, warm bread and smoke. Medium to full-bodied, layered and complete, this searingly intense and assertively mineral Saint-Aubin brought tears to my eyes. Sadly, obtaining even a bottle will require considerable guile and a large disposable income, but what pleasures await the lucky few who will taste this profound white Burgundy. |

Wine Advocate (97)Whether the 2017 or the 2019 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Derrière Chez Edouard Haute Densité is the finer wine will be a fascinating question to debate over the decades to come, but the latter continues to perform brilliantly, mingling aromas of green pineapple, pear and citrus oil with notions of freshly baked bread, toasted nuts and youthful reduction in a compelling bouquet. Full-bodied, satiny and concentrated, it's rich and layered, with a racy spine of acidity, chalky structure and a long, intensely mineral finish. This is a stunning white Burgundy that takes Saint-Aubin to places that no one would have imagined possible a mere decade ago. It's a monumental achievement from Olivier Lamy, one of contemporary Burgundy's greatest vignerons. |
