Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Vinous (93-95)The 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, matured in 50% new oak, has a precocious bouquet with layers of opulent blackberry, cassis and redcurrant fruit, crushed violets bursting from the glass. This does not hold back. The palate is sweet and velvety smooth on the entry, fine tannins that frame the intense black cherry and cassis fruit with a judicious touch of spice towards the finish. Afford this 5-7 years in the cellar to tame its precocity. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2022 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru comprises two barrels, one new and one a year old. It has quite a backward nose, more tertiary in style, quite flinty, in fact. Blind, I would not guess this to be from this vineyard at all. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe black cherry and boysenberry fruit, fine mineralité and backbone. This is much more open, fanning out with style towards the finish that has just the right amount of edge. It's very fine but will require bottle age to unlock the aromatics. |

Burghound (92-94)(from a .123 ha parcel of 80+ year old vines situated mostly in terres blanches; about 600 bottles are produced each year). A discreet application of oak frames the overtly spice aromas of poached plum, dark cherry and violet. The rich, solidly concentrated and weighty larger-bodied flavors are at once supple yet powerful with a taut muscularity, all wrapped in a wonderfully persistent and complex finale where the only nit is a touch of warmth. In the context of the 2023 vintage, this is a big wine and one that will need at least moderate patience. |

Wine Advocate (93)Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes has a delightful, crisp, delineated, beautifully poised bouquet with fine mineralité and tension. This is a top notch nose. The palate is seamless on the entry, silky smooth and utterly seductive, the acidity well judged. There remains some new oak to be absorbed, but there is plenty of fruit to absorb that with 4-5 years in bottle. This is a top notch vin de garde Chambolle-Musignny and there is not a great number of those this vintage. Tasted September 2016. |

Wine Advocate (90-92)The 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1Er Cru les Charmes comes from vines around 60-years-old. I like the volume and purity here -- just joyful black cherry and cassis fruit with an underlying mineralité that comes through more and more with time. The palate is crisp and slightly chalky in texture, grippy in the mouth, much more masculine that the nose suggests with firm structure imparting linearity towards the lightly peppered finish. This is an excellent Chambolle Charmes that will drink well over the next 8-15 years. |

Wine Advocate (93)Cropped at a modest 32 hectoliters per hectare, the 2015 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes unfurls in the glass with an enticing bouquet of ripe cherries, dark chocolate, spices and espresso roast. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and layered, with a textural attack, excellent depth and dimension at the core and velvety structuring tannins. It's a real success in the gourmand style of the vintage. |

Vinous (93)The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru has an intense bouquet with layers of red fruit, blood orange, brown spices and even a touch of lemongrass (something more normally found on whites, although it does work here). The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins that impart a fleshy mouthfeel. This feels very harmonious and, although there is more new oak to be assimilated, ultimately I feel this will turn into a very serious, more modern style Chambolle-Musigny. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. |

Vinous (94)The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru has a complex bouquet of red currant, cranberry, leather and light minty aromas that gather pace in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fresh line of acidity and superb _ mineralité_ on the finish. This comes highly recommended. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru has a crisp, delineated bouquet of mineral-rich blackberry and boysenberry fruit displaying wonderful tension and focus. The palate is tensile right from the start, offering succulent black fruit, a silky-smooth texture and an intense, blood-orange-infused finish. Plenty of energy here. This should turn into a superb Chambolle-Musigny. |

Vinous (91-93)The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru is very pure on the nose, quite intense like the Vieilles Vignes with verging on ostentatious black cherry and cassis fruit, very floral and not shy in the slightest. The palate restores order with some gorgeous red berry fruit, slightly gourmand in style, almost gamey towards the finish that feels very long. Succulent ‘n sexy. |

Vinous (91-93)The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru comes from two barrels and is aged in 25% new oak. This is much more complex and nuanced on the nose than the Vieilles Vignes: very focused with ebullient red fruit laced with violet. The palate is medium-bodied with good density on the entry. It's quite structured for a Chambolle with some firm tannins on the finish, but sufficient fruit keeps it balanced and poised. |

Burghound (90-92)(from a .63 ha parcel). Liqueur-like aromas include those of black cherry, poached plum and a spicy top note. The sleek, seductive and supple flavors are not especially dense while exuding a subtle minerality that adds a sense of lift to the balanced, dusty and impressively long finale that is presently youthfully austere. This is understated and really quite good. |

Wine Advocate (90-93)The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras was less put together when I tasted it, offering up aromas of juicy cherries, wild berries and subtle grilled meats, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample but inscrutably tight-knit palate. The outlines are promising, but it needs more élevage, so my score is more than usually imprecise. |
