Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)

Rich purple, an even colour throughout the glass. Robust red fruit. There is a fine depth of flavour and some class here, plump in the middle, juicy and long, filling the mouth again, while keeping a mineral fresh feel too.

Jancis Robinson (16.5)

Mid crimson. Deep-fruited and much more perfumed than the straight village Nuits-St-Georges. A marked step up in finesse. Dry, finely chalky tannins. Sinewy but elegant with that perfume on the long finish. Impressive persistence. (JH)

Burghound (88-91)

A subtle but not imperceptible application of wood can be found on the ripe and fresh aromas of poached plum, fennel and soft earth nuances. The rich, concentrated and palate coating medium-bodied flavors are shaped by relatively refined tannins on the lightly stony, punch and youthfully austere finale. Worth considering.

Vinous (87-89)

The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Village offers sensual red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit on the well-defined nose. The palate is medium-bodied with soft tannins. An unashamedly approachable and malleable Village Cru with a rounded, plump finish.

Vinous - Neal Martin (91)

The 2021 Chablis Valmur Grand Cru takes a few swirls to get going. It offers touches of yellow fruit and jasmine, with quite aromatic notes of pressed flowers and oily resinous aromas. The palate is well balanced with a slightly viscous entry, a keen line of acidity and a creamy texture, with a touch of custard creams and orange pith on the finish. Not long but it feels nicely composed. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Esteemed as a pristine example of the Burgundian winemaking art, the Jean Dauvissat Chablis 1er Cru Montmains 2017 entrances the palate with eloquent expression. Sourced from the windswept slopes of the premier cru vineyard of Montmains, the exceptionally old vines yield small quantities of intensely concentrated grapes. This Chablis is produced by the meticulous Dauvissat family, inheritors of traditional winemaking knowledge dating back to the 18th century. Capturing the nuances of Kimmeridgian limestone soil, this liquid poetry embodies scintillating acidity interlaced with notes of green apples, minerals, and white flowers. Maturation on fine lees elicits depth and silken textures, the result of Dauvissat's unwavering dedication to natural yeast fermentation and avoidance of oak. The voluptuously complex Jean Dauvissat Chablis 1er Cru Montmains 2017, a testament to Chablis' prowess, is a compelling meta-narrative distilled into the glass — of terroir embraced and innovation delicate, of legacy respected, and new chapters written.

From vines planted at elevated densities, the 2020 Marsannay Clos du Roy Blanc exhibits notes of white flowers, citrus zest, crisp orchard fruit and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and racy, with bright acids and a saline, mineral finish, it shows plenty of promise.

Wine Advocate (90-92)

The 2016 Marsannay Clos du Roy was cropped at a reasonable 35 hectoliters per hectare with no problem of frost or mildew. It has a forward and quite impressive bouquet of raspberry, cranberry and a touch of blackberry, well defined if fairly straightforward. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannin, a nice touch of bitter cherry to counter that ripe, lush red berry fruit with a tang of cracked black pepper towards the finish. Great protential.

The 2022 Marsannay Clos du Roy has a classy bouquet with beautifully defined black cherry and bilberry fruit, an underlying mineralité becoming more evident with aeration. The medium-bodied palate is fresh with finely chiseled tannins and impressive structure, yet finishes harmonious and pure. Bon vin.

Vinous - Neal Martin (90-92)

The 2023 Marsannay Clos du Roy had been racked one month before my visit and will continue aging in larger 600-liter barrels. This is understated, very poised and focused on the nose that unfolds succinctly in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, satisfying weight and a focused, quite structured finish. Maybe it doesn't quite have the ambition of the previous vintage, yet this is still a top-notch Marsannay.

The 2019 Marsannay Es Chezots is one of the most impressive on the nose among Laurent Fournier’s cuvées with black cherries, cassis and briary aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins. There is a discrete marine influence, touches of oyster shell and sea salt on the finish of this splendid and sophisticated Marsannay.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)

Rich deep purple, I do like the nose here. Laurent says it did not show so well earlier and is now only coming in to itself. He is looking at longer ageing. Huge stuffing to this yet entirely balanced. On the cusp of red and black, a little bit spicy and with excellent length. Tasted: November 2021

The 2021 Marsannay Es Chezots has a lively, vibrant bouquet with pure Dorset plum and bilberry scents, light iris petal aromas. Very detailed. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiselled tannins, quite chalky in texture, perhaps a little compact but I feel this has something up its sleeve for later. Fournier's spiciest Marsannay. Great potential.

5 stars. Pale to mid lemon yellow. No sign of too much wood here from Schneckenleitner barrels, much crisper with great tension behind and complex citrus fruit notes behind. Long and fine. Excellent. Marries freshness and density. Tasted: November 2021

Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93)

The 2023 Marsannay Les Longeroies has a sensual bouquet with vivid red berry fruit, raspberry and wild strawberry, wilted rose petal and crushed stone emerging with time. It has exquisite delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant, fine-boned tannins. This has more complexity than the Clos du Roy, fanning out wonderfully on the finish. Expect this to land at the top of my banded score. It is superb.

Vinous (91-93)

The 2019 Marsannay Le Chapitre comprises a blend of 15- and 75-year-old vines. Interestingly, Laurent Fournier remarks that the younger vines performed better due to the superior rootstock. It has a gorgeous bouquet with dark cherries, blackcurrant and light violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very velvety in texture with an almost crystalline finish. Just a wonderful Marsannay from Fournier this year.
