Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Vinous (92+)Pale, bright yellow. High-pitched aromas of orange peel and tangerine lifted by bright floral and crushed stone qualities. Highly concentrated, supple and chewy, conveying an impression of power to its lemon, orange, floral and mineral flavors. Sappy, silky, rich wine with an enticing touch of sweetness countered by firm acidity. Frederic Drouhin suggests pairing this wine with poulet au citron or seafood linguine. |

Burghound (93)Cool and pure aromas are comprised of notes of honeysuckle, white peach and a whiff of fennel. The natural refinement of Pucelles is on display as the medium-bodied flavors are at once rich and sophisticated while delivering impressive depth and length on the impeccably well-balanced finale. This classy effort should easily repay up to a decade of keeping. Sweet Spot. Outstanding. Drink 2027+. |

Burghound (93)A ripe if highly restrained mix of red and blue fruit is liberally sprinkled with spice and floral notes. There is good volume and solid mid-palate density to the seductively delicious big-bodied flavors that are shaped by a phenolically mature tannic spine, all wrapped in a mildly rustic but highly persistent mineral-inflected finish. Note well that this muscular and robust effort is definitely going to need at least 7 to 8 years of keeping and require 15+, perhaps even slightly more. |

Vinous (91-93)The 2017 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru comes from three lieux-dits: Les Charmes, Les Petits-Monts and Aux Malconsorts. It has a very composed bouquet of ample ripe raspberry, crushed strawberry, veins of blue fruit and a touch of crushed stone. The palate is well balanced with supple tannin and a fine bead of acidity. A light oyster shell note pokes up toward the harmonious, velvety finish. This is going to be very seductive. |

Vinous (90-92)(13.3% following modest chaptalization): Good bright medium red-ruby. Cassis, blackberry, licorice, minerals, fresh herbs and bitter chocolate on the nose, lifted by a floral topnote. At once dense and juicy, with lovely inner-mouth tension and energy to its intense dark fruit flavors. Savory, penetrating wine with a firm tannic backbone and resounding finishing fruit. The crop level was around 30 hectoliters per hectare and the vines were picked on September 6, according to Drouhin. |

Vinous (93-95)(40% vendange entier): Bright red-ruby. Deep, slightly reduced aromas of black raspberry, espresso and smoky minerality. Very concentrated but wonderfully suave, fine-grained and laid-back in the early going, showing no rough edges in spite of its brisk acidity. There's outstanding energy to the sweet black fruit and soil flavors, with the wine's new oak and stem elements perfectly integrated. Finishes juicy, firmly tannic and very long, really spreading out horizontally to saturate the palate. Boasts the sappiness and lift of the best 2015s. (Incidentally, Frédéric Drouhin did not present his Bonnes-Mares, as only 300 liters were made in 2015.) |

Vinous (92-94)The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits Monts 1er Cru is one of the last vineyards Drouhin picked, and there is just a little bit of vinification intégrale used in this wine. It has quite a powerful bouquet of strawberry pastilles, raspberry and light rose petal aromas, quite pure and complex, deserving of this excellent Premier Cru. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, beautiful pure cranberry and raspberry fruit and real race and vigor toward the structured finish. This is one of the best Petits Monts I have tasted this vintage. Five barrels produced. |

Vinous (89-91)The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits Monts 1er Cru comes from a parcel that lies just above Richebourg and receives 50% whole bunch. Now this is one cru that comes across a little trop on the nose, displaying a soupçon of volatility. The palate is sweet on the entry with dark cherries, loganberry and sea salt notes. Lush and powerful, though missing a bit of finesse and precision on the finish. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits Monts 1er Cru, which until now I did not realize is owned by Véronique Drouhin-Boss personally, includes 40% whole cluster. It has a wonderful bouquet of violet-infused red plum and cranberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Full of tension and energy with good grip toward the sensual finish. Excellent. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)Bright deep purple with lots of glycerol legs. 40-45% whole bunch vinification. It does show but under cover, then a few more tannins and the drier patch which goes with whole bunch vinification. But what a sensational quality of fruit, the strawberries are dancing over the palate. Very precise and very persistent. Drink from 2032-2039. Tasted Nov 2024. |
