Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

The 2008 Morey St.-Denis Les Chaffots is a sexy, powerful wine. This is a beautifully intense Morey layered with exquisite fruit. The tension between the fruit and the tannins keeps things interesting as the wine turns a bit dark on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028.Inc. VAT£204.53 -
Vinous (92+)
Healthy medium red. Reduced aromas of raspberry, smoke, brown spices and dried flowers. Rich, dense and harmonious, showing a lovely sugar/acid balance and noteworthy mineral-driven energy. Finishes firm, chewy and long, with a complicating saline quality. This is 13.2% alcohol without chaptalization, according to Laurent Lignier.Inc. VAT£158.52 -

The 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Chaffots 1er Cru has (another) very well defined bouquet with redcurrant, cranberry and sous-bois aromas, a little stemminess in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, impressive depth, but what underpins this premier cru is the freshness and tension on the finish. It should age with style. Superb.Inc. VAT£795.12 -

Medium red. Pungent aromas of raspberry, cranberry, blood orange and mint turned slightly high-toned and exotic with air. Juicy and a bit herbal in the mouth, with flavors of cranberry and pomegranate supported by pronounced saline minerality. Delivers a strong overall impression of small wild red fruits. Two thousand thirteen was a bit like 2008 but with less sun and more rain at the end, noted Laurent Lignier.Inc. VAT£90.53 -
Vinous (88-90)
(about 25% of the fruit was lost to frost): Bright, dark red with ruby tones. Quite open and aromatic on the nose, offering scents of black cherry and flowers. Nicely concentrated, sappy wine with a subtle sweetness to its flavors of cherry and black raspberry. This fruit was entirely destemmed but the wine finishes linear and firmly tannic, with good saline persistence.Inc. VAT£92.65 -
Vinous (87-89)
The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis Très Girard comes from purchased fruit. It has a refined bouquet with black fruit, black olive and light floral aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins on the entry. This is structured and strict, a little austere on the finish - hopefully it will gain some flesh by the time of bottling.Inc. From purchased fruit, the 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis Très Girard has a well-defined bouquet with vibrant red berry fruit, touches of white pepper and tea leaves. Vinous (88-90)
From a parcel just behind the Lignier maison, this 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis Très Girard is made with purchased fruit. It has a commendable bouquet with quite floral red cherry and wild strawberry, hints of liquorice. The palate is medium-bodied with a rather peppery entry and fine grip. Not amazingly complex but it is bestowed with admirable density on the finish. Give it a couple of years in bottle.Inc. VAT£418.40 -

The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis Trilogie, which includes 25% whole bunch fruit from vines that tend to suffer millerandage, offers vivacious dark cherry and raspberry coulis scents on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, a fine bead of acidity, good focus and a mineral-infused finish that delivers a pleasant sour edginess. Excellent.Inc. VAT£99.20 -

The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis "Trilogie" comes from three lieux-dits: Chenevery (50%), Clos Salon (15%) and Les Porroux (35%). It has a crisp, quite airy, open bouquet with vibrant black cherry and briary aromas, fine definition with a touch of graphite in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit. The one-third whole bunches is nicely integrated and lending black pepper notes on the lively finish. Recommended.Inc. VAT£123.86 -

Offering up aromas of cassis, red berries, warm spices and loamy soil, the 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis Trilogie is medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with a deep and youthfully tightly wound core of fruit that's framed by lively acids and powdery tannins. This is likely to emerge as Lignier's finest communal-level bottling this year, but it will also require the most patience.Inc. VAT£482.44 -

Vinous (93-95)
The 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, matured in 50% new oak, has a precocious bouquet with layers of opulent blackberry, cassis and redcurrant fruit, crushed violets bursting from the glass. This does not hold back. The palate is sweet and velvety smooth on the entry, fine tannins that frame the intense black cherry and cassis fruit with a judicious touch of spice towards the finish. Afford this 5-7 years in the cellar to tame its precocity.Inc. VAT£1,299.96 -
(3x75cl) 2021Vinous - Neal Martin (92)
The 2021 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is clearly darker in colour than its peers. It offers more fruit concentration and opulence on the nose—a rare facet in this growing season—with inky purple fruit and a floral component that emerges with time. The palate is sweeter and more fruit driven than its peers, with blackberry, blueberry and a light cassis note, though it does not have the complexity or terroir expression of its peers. It feels as if it is trying too hard. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.Inc. VAT£1,367.42 -
Vinous (93-95)
The 2022 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru comprises two barrels, one new and one a year old. It has quite a backward nose, more tertiary in style, quite flinty, in fact. Blind, I would not guess this to be from this vineyard at all. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe black cherry and boysenberry fruit, fine mineralité and backbone. This is much more open, fanning out with style towards the finish that has just the right amount of edge. It's very fine but will require bottle age to unlock the aromatics.Inc. VAT£1,174.00 -
Burghound (92-94)
(from a .123 ha parcel of 80+ year old vines situated mostly in terres blanches; about 600 bottles are produced each year). A discreet application of oak frames the overtly spice aromas of poached plum, dark cherry and violet. The rich, solidly concentrated and weighty larger-bodied flavors are at once supple yet powerful with a taut muscularity, all wrapped in a wonderfully persistent and complex finale where the only nit is a touch of warmth. In the context of the 2023 vintage, this is a big wine and one that will need at least moderate patience.Inc. VAT£1,241.20 -

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes has a delightful, crisp, delineated, beautifully poised bouquet with fine mineralité and tension. This is a top notch nose. The palate is seamless on the entry, silky smooth and utterly seductive, the acidity well judged. There remains some new oak to be absorbed, but there is plenty of fruit to absorb that with 4-5 years in bottle. This is a top notch vin de garde Chambolle-Musignny and there is not a great number of those this vintage. Tasted September 2016.Inc. VAT£148.13 -
Wine Advocate (90-92)
The 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1Er Cru les Charmes comes from vines around 60-years-old. I like the volume and purity here -- just joyful black cherry and cassis fruit with an underlying mineralité that comes through more and more with time. The palate is crisp and slightly chalky in texture, grippy in the mouth, much more masculine that the nose suggests with firm structure imparting linearity towards the lightly peppered finish. This is an excellent Chambolle Charmes that will drink well over the next 8-15 years.Inc. VAT£148.13
