Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Wine Advocate (92+)The 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Procès is shutting down, opening reluctantly in the glass to reveal aromas of red berries, grilled meat and warm spices. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, satiny but dense, with a deep, concentrated core and chalky structuring tannins. This will need more time than the comparatively precocious 2017 rendition. |

Vinous (89-91)The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Procès, which includes 50% whole bunches, has a very feminine, pure red cherry and crushed strawberry bouquet that develops flinty scents with aeration. The medium-bodied palate displays supple tannin and a fine bead of acidity, and feels quite compact toward the finish; it will benefit from two or three years in bottle. Excellent. |

Vinous (90-92)The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Procès has a complex bouquet featuring earthy and woodland aromas and touches of morels and black truffle. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chalky tannins, and more compact than the Les Poisets, showing a touch of black pepper on the finish. Give this four or five years in bottle, because it has more to give. |

Vinous (93)The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Procès is comparatively stony on the nose, a little more austere on the nose, opening gradually with aeration, a mixture of red and black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a little more sinew on the entry than the Les Poisets, quite sappy towards the finish with a dash of white pepper and clove towards the harmonious finish. Very good persistence here, a wine that is deceptively approachable but it is worth cellaring. |

Burghound (89-91)There is just enough reduction present to suppress the underlying fruit but it shouldn't last. Otherwise there is a really lovely texture to the attractively intense and vibrant middle weight flavors that display only a touch of rusticity on the complex, focused and solidly persistent finale. This too is really very good and worth a look. |

Vinous (89-91)The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Village is a blend of several vineyards that offer homogeneous ripeness but on different soils. It has quite an earthy, sous-bois tinged bouquet that is very well defined, the 60% whole bunches nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with a tart opening, and the 10% new oak lends discreet lift toward a persistent finish spiced with a dash of black pepper. Excellent. |

Jancis Robinson (16.5)1.42 ha from seven lieux-dits in the north of the appellation. 100% whole bunch. Lightish cherry red but greyish rather than crimson. A little more savoury than the Bourgogne and a very slight stemmy herbal note but it's subtle. A little bit peppery. More tension here than in the Bourgogne, a little lighter in obvious fruit and a little more tannic but barely so. Super-fresh. Dry and lingering. So elegant. |

Vinous (88-90)The 2018 Nuit Saint-Georges Les Poisets comes from 0.7 hectares that this year produced just five barrels due to hail (14hl/ha). The nose feels a little disjointed at the moment, missing the focus that imbues Lachaux’s other 2018s. It needs to find more harmony during its élevage. The palate is medium-bodied with wild strawberry and cranberry fruit, firm tannins and a very pretty, pure finish that maybe just misses the length of other recent vintages I have tasted. |
