Hugel Riesling Schoelhammer 2008 (6x75cl) James Suckling (96)A very complex rose petal and herbal riesling that is ridiculously fresh for almost a decade of age. Very muscular and concentrated, but still cool and fresh with enormous mineral depth at the finish. Just coming to its peak, but decades of aging potential!

2009 |
Hugel Riesling Schoelhammer 2009 (6x75cl) Vinous (94)Luminous straw-green. Knockout nose of fresh and dried fruits, marzipan, honey, lychee and white flowers. Clean, fresh and juicy, offering flavors of fruit salad and fresh citrus complicated by almond milk and floral nuances. Deceptively easy to drink but very dense and deep, showcasing lovely balance (7.2 g/L total acidity, 13.6% alcohol and 8 g/L r.s.) and nicely combining Mosel-like floral daintiness and Schonenbourg power. You’d never guess this was made in a hot year like 2009. Finishes very long and vibrant, with ripe acidity typical of this site. This is the third vintage of the Schoelhammer to be released and it is hands-down not just my favorite, but also by far the best, purest and most precise wine of the three. Delicious.

Marc Kreydenweiss Riesling Kastelberg 2015 (12x75cl)
In Bond: £750.00
|
2015 |
Marc Kreydenweiss Riesling Kastelberg 2015 (12x75cl) Wine Advocate (96-98)Tasted from the stainless-steel vat (after one year in foudre), the 2015 Grand Cru Kastelberg Riesling is rich and intense on the nose, showing butter, herbal and pencil aromas for the moment. The attack on the palate is fresh and vibrant, revealing a delicate, though piquant, acidity along with great purity and lingering salinity. The wine develops great finesse and concentration and its tension and precision in the very long, intense and salty finish is mind-blowing. The tannins are firm, but perfectly polymerised. I tasted the wine again the next day when it started like a Chenin Blanc from the Anjou with concentrated quince and pear aromas on the nose. Rich, elegant and juicy, the wine again showed fine tannins and a long and intense finish with salt, orange and kumquat flavors. The 2015 might be on its way to becoming a legendary Kastelberg, but it is still a bit cloudy and can only be examined like a baby on ultrasound. However, first signs indicate this could become a giant one day, not in terms of bigness, but in terms of precision, concentration, finesse and mineral expression. The wine will be bottled with just 3 milligrams of SO2.

2013 |
Marcel Deiss Riesling Grand Cru Schoenenbourg 2013 (6x75cl) Wine Enthusiast (96)Exquisitely pure and aromatic notes of baked pear gleam in the glass along with something heady and ethereal that is reminiscent of freshly cut citrus zest. The off-dry palate has a balm-like viscosity and brings out honeyed ripe Mirabelles, but it all happens at such a gentle clean pure level that this feels like sublimated ripe fruit framed by vivid citrus. Despite some residual sweetness this stays fresh. This is a wine that explains in one small sip and sniff what a good field blend can be all about. It is lovely now and only just starting to evolve. Drink until 2040.

Marcel Deiss Riesling Grand Cru Schoenenbourg 2015 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (98)The 2015 Grand Cru Schoenenbourg opens clear, intense, precise and floral on the nose, with concentrated lemon confit and smoky gypsum flavors. This 2015 is really concentrated on the nose and displays a gorgeously fresh and vegetal greeniness. Sweet, finessed and lush on the creamy textured palate, this is a very precise and concentrated Schonenbourg with a very long, intense and seductive finish. There is great elegance, finesse and complexity here. Very salty. This is a great long-distance runner.

Trimbach Pinot Gris Reserve Personnelle 2008 (12x75cl)
In Bond: £282.00
|
2008 |
Trimbach Pinot Gris Reserve Personnelle 2008 (12x75cl) Wine Advocate (93)Even more succulently rich yet no less dense or mouthwateringly bright than its “regular reserve” counterpart, the Trimbach 2008 Pinot Gris Reserve Personnelle is adds mirabelle and litchi to the peach, blood orange, and grapefruit of its “little” brother and a hint of oiliness of texture accentuates the impression of a Pinot Gris into which a bit of Gewurztraminer has been blended. As this opens to the air, musky and animal fat notes as well as black tea smokiness add intrigue and interest that – like sheer invigoration – never flags on repeated exposure to a veritably explosive finish. Look for this beauty to reward at least 15 years of attention and to perform feats at table that few wines can rival.

Trimbach Riesling Clos Ste Hune 2015 (3x75cl) Vinous (97+)Bright golden-tinged straw-yellow. Enticing nose of yellow apple, mirabelle, crystallized ginger and white flowers, complicated by lemony minerality. Dense, fresh and juicy, displaying outstanding sugar-acid balance and an opulent mouthfeel that is nicely lifted by penetrating notes of mirabelle, lime, wet stones, lemon peel and almond. While this enters sweet, it finishes very clean and dry. Boasts one of the most fragrant, prettiest and most forward noses I recall in a young CSH.

2016 |
Trimbach Riesling Clos Ste Hune 2016 (1x150cl) Vinous (98+)Luminous straw. Penetrating nuances of lime and guava join the lemon verbena, jasmine, mineral and white stone fruit aromas on the knockout, captivating nose. Then dense, complex and multilayered, offering profound flavors of fresh citrus fruit, sweet spices and talcum powder. Closes extremely long, clean and precise; this is a young white wine of utterly mesmerizing beauty. I find this to be one of the best young CSHs I have ever tasted; it is stylistically different but almost on the same quality level as the marvelous 2010 CSH. One sniff (never mind taste) and I was left almost speechless - and I’m not usually one who keeps his mouth shut when I recognize a truly great wine.

Trimbach Riesling Cuvee Frederic Emile 2005 (6x75cl)
In Bond: £489.00
|
2005 |
Trimbach Riesling Cuvee Frederic Emile 2005 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (93)The 2005 Riesling Cuvee Frederic Emile follows the lead of the “reserve” bottling in offering palpable extract yet elegance and refinement. Peach, apricot, apricot kernel, lime, and pungent floral notes in the nose lead to a juicy mouthful of citrus and pit fruit with further invigoration added by accents of salt, huckleberry and toasted pumpkin seeds. Blazingly bright in its citricity and palate-staining in its fruit, nut, and mineral intensity, this displays an amazing tiny-berry concentration and utmost clarity when one considers its having been rained on early in October – tribute to an impeccable viticultural regime as well as the breezy location (on the Osterberg) of these vines. It won’t be released until 2010, by which time it can be expected to have “shut down” and re-opened, as well as – I hasten to add – to promise further richness and complexity over the following 12-15 years. Chalk dust, sea breeze and lime in the nose of their 2004 Riesling Reserve set the rather austere tone for this densely-concentrated wine. A hint of muskiness signals an exotic aspect that runs right though a minerally-intense finish that really shows the wines ripe but ultra-bright acidity. This (like some of the other 2004s) appears to already be in the process of shutting down a bit, leading me to wonder whether it might hit the market while in a vinous trough.

2008 |
Trimbach Riesling Cuvee Frederic Emile 2008 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (96)The 2008 Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile is now in the market and readers shouldn't miss seeking it out. This is a gorgeously matured dry Riesling classic from Ribeauvillé that drinks perfectly today and pairs with many kind of dishes. The wine has an intense citrus color and opens with a very clear, deep, dense and aromatic bouquet of dried fruits along with herbal and mineral aromas. Full-bodied, pure and elegant, yet complex and mineral on the palate, this is a silky textured but well-structured dry Riesling with intense and persistent fruit, fine tannins and lingering salinity. Bottled April 2009, this is a great dry Riesling blend from the Grands Crus Geisberg and Osterberg.

2015 |
Trimbach Riesling Cuvee Frederic Emile 2015 (6x75cl) Vinous (95+)Vibrant straw-green. The penetrating, explosive nose offers yellow apple, musky ginger, flint and chamomile. Dense, sappy and highly concentrated; peach and balsamic flavors are complicated by a hint of crystallized citrus peel. Displays lovely balance from start to very long finish. This is a noteworthy step up in concentration and complexity from Trimbach’s Mandelberg and Schlossberg Rieslings, however delightful those last two wines are in 2015. In keeping with the hot, dry 2015 vintage, this strikes me as sweeter than usual for the Fréderic Emile, though by the time it goes on sale in seven or eight years, it will taste less sweet than it is today. Clearly, the berries and bunches were extremely small in 2015, and so the wine is especially concentrated, rich and glyceral, all of which contribute a dimension of sweetness. However, the small berries didn’t give much juice and only 26,000 bottles were produced in 2015, instead of the more usual 40,000. Always a blend of grapes grown in the Geisberg and Osterberg sites, the wine’s makeup in 2015 is about 60/40 in favor of the Osterberg, but not surprisingly, the Geisberg’s presence really comes through in a hot year like 2015. I personally like it more when the Osterberg stands out, but that said, this is a really outstanding wine in the making, one of the best young FEs I have memory of.

Weinbach Gewurztraminer Altenbourg 2019 (6x75cl) James Suckling (97)Breathtaking nose of tropical flowers and foliage after rain, with a whiff of smoke in the air. This has spectacular elegance and minerality for a wine of this stature (14.5% alcohol). I love the fresh-ginger note that already suggests the kind of dishes that would pair beautifully with this masterpiece of restrained extravagance. Only a hint of sweetness at the ravishing finish. Zind Humbrecht Gewurztraminer Clos Windsbuhl 2004 (12x75cl)
In Bond: £627.00
|
2004 |
Zind Humbrecht Gewurztraminer Clos Windsbuhl 2004 (12x75cl) Wine Advocate (94)In the event, his fears were unfounded, as the warmth of September proved to have been sufficient for an outstanding 2004 Gewurztraminer Clos Windsbuhl. Mint, honey, caramelized celery root in the nose segue into a palate of creamy richness, considerable delicacy, and only subtle sweetness (from 14.5 grams residual sugar), dominated by alkaline, saline, marine, iodine-inflected mineral elements. This is the most remarkably juicy, refreshing, and indeed delicate of the lot of Humbrecht ’04 Gewurztraminer, and its finish is among the most perfumed, lip-smacking in fruit yet also most thought-provoking in its mysterious mineral and animal aspects of any of Humbrecht’s 2004s. I would not disagree with him when he characterizes its balance as “perfect,” yet there is no doubt this balance could hold for many years if not decades, and I certainly keenly anticipate following its evolution and the additional complexity that is almost sure to come.

2007 |
Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Clos Windsbuhl 2007 (12x75cl) Wine Advocate (88)Like the Riesling, the apricot-colored 2007 Pinot Gris Clos Windsbuhl is an austere wine on both nose and palate. The bouquet of my sample (which was provided by a German retailer) is still fresh and vital, but reveals some oxidative old-style Rioja flavors along with matured aromas of oranges, lemons, black bread, mushrooms and dried apricots. Quite dry but intense on the palate and provided with a pronounced, not very well integrated acidity, this full-bodied 15% alcohol wine is surely no crowd-pleaser in its austerity, but a complex and interesting Pinot Gris with food. Probably I did not have the best bottle.
