2019 |
Bernard Baudry Chinon Le Clos Guillot 2019 (6x75cl) Vinous (95-97)Just outside the village, Clos Guillot sits on a slope on clay over limestone. The 2019 Chinon is a serious barrel sample that melts in your mouth with its silken texture. No crushing, very little remontage and a year in used barrels all lend a very gentle touch. The tannins build gradually, coating the mouth with the finest of chalky textures. Excellent acidity keeps things fresh through the finish.

2011 |
Charles Joguet Chinon Clos de la Dioterie 2011 (12x75cl) Vinous (92+)Deeply saturated ruby. Rich aromas of cassis, licorice and menthol. Plush and unctuous but nonetheless elegant, displaying complex flavors of raspberry, black cherry, tobacco and menthol. With of touch of wild herbs on the finish, this cabernet franc has the supple core to support its ripe tannins, which allows this extremely young wine to begin to express itself. The only question mark I have is the somewhat higher level of alcohol: 14% is unusual for a Joguet wine. Having gone through a longer period of unification in stainless steel after maturation in barrel, it was only bottled in January of 2014. 6,000 produced.

2015 |
Charles Joguet Chinon Clos de la Dioterie 2015 (6x75cl) Vinous (90)Quite a different style from 2017. Aged 22 months in barrique, mix of new and old barrels. A bit reductive and toasty. The nose is attractive but oaky, with notes of cedar, hay, green olive, and rosemary. Chewy on the palate, dense, dark fresh fruit, but still lean and tight. An outlier worth checking in on a couple years from now.

2018 |
Claude Riffault Sancerre Noue Rouge 2018 (12x75cl) Wine Advocate (90+)From 30- to 58-year-old vines on terres blanches and marl soils, Stéphane Riffault's 2018 Sancerre La Noue was cold-macerated and fermented with whole clusters for a total of four weeks. It offers an aromatic, fruity, elegant and charming bouquet of red cherries, raspberries and redcurrant intertwined with stony notes. Concentrated, round and mellow on he palate, this is an elegant, already accessible and maybe too charming (?) Pinot with ripe black berry and licorice aromas on the aftertaste. It was aged for a total of 16 months in 228- to 600-liter oak casks prior the bottling in February. Tasted right after the bottling in February 2021.

2016 |
Clos Rougeard Saumur-Champigny 2016 (6x75cl) Vinous (94)Released in November 2021, after its customary five year stay in the cellar, the 2016 Le Clos is a wine that makes you say 'God this is good' as soon as you put a drop in your mouth before you sink into it. While it is already starting to open up and could be approached by the impatient wine lover, this has the tannins that will leave you licking your lips and abundant acidity making your mouth water. In combination with the fine concentration of fruit and long length, there's no hurry to open. On the drawn out finish, cherry, tea leaf and mushroom flavors linger on and on.

2015 |
Couly-Dutheil Clos de l'Echo Chinon 2015 (6x75cl) Vinous (94)The 2015 Chinon Clos de L'Echo is a very complete wine that's starting to mature. Hailing from a warm season that ended with a cool harvest period, it offers fine focus in the mouth despite its natural breadth. The black currant and minty fruit of youth are now being joined by savory, developing flavors. The star of the show is the abundant yet resolved tannins, which positively coat the mouth with a fine veil of cocoa-powder-like grains. The lengthy finish is savory, scented and satisfying yet fresh with mouthwatering acidity. Drinking beautifully now and for another decade.

2018 |
Didier Dagueneau Pouilly-Fume Buisson-Renard 2018 (6x75cl) Vinous (93)Returning in 2018 after 2017 was wiped out by frosts, this is an intense, wild 2018 Buisson Renard, like an untamed head of curls. In clear evidence at this early stage, it has floral and boxwood characters and a nutty oak-derived influence. There's even an intriguing note of peppermint on the sinewy, lengthy finish. In a mid-weight, linear style with a firm, phenolic finish that almost requires knife and fork. This needs more time in bottle to shed its austere frame, but if you're not in a hurry...

2020 |
Didier Dagueneau Pouilly-Fume Buisson-Renard 2020 (6x75cl) Vinous (92-94)The 2020 Buisson Renard is made from vines planted on the lower half of a south-facing slope with this part of the world's classic combination of clay and flint soils. However, towards the bottom of the slope, the clay becomes richer, giving rounder shoulders and a great sense of volume on the mid-palate. And yet it remains light. The wine is delicately aromatic with subtle notes of nectarine joining the oak-derived vanilla characters (20-25% new barrels). The finish is precise and long, the wine's fragrance coating the mouth as if taking a seat on the inside of your cheeks. Tasted from tank.
