  • Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Rouges 2023 (6x75cl)

    Burghound (91-93)

A restrained but cool and elegant nose reflects pretty spice, floral and red berry scents. The beautifully textured if not especially dense middle weight flavors flash evident minerality on the dusty, youthfully austere and complex finale that is both balanced and persistent. This is lovely and understated.

  • Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Suchots 2007 (12x75cl)

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-93)

Good full red. Sweet aromas of black cherry and minerals. Rich, lush and deep, with a sappy minerality and superb breadth. The palate-coating finish is long and vibrant. Boasts grand cru texture in the context of the vintage.
  • Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Suchots 2011 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92-94)

A dark, powerful Burgundy, the 2011 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots is another wine deeply marked by site. Black fruit, smoke, tar, incense and scorched earth all come together in this decidedly masculine, brooding wine. Ideally, the 2011 is best cellared for at least a few years, but it will always remain full-bodied and intense.
  • Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Suchots 2015 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (95-97)

The 2015 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots has an exquisite bouquet, extremely pure with scents of redcurrant, blueberry, violets, cola and wet limestone. Like the 2015 Les Beaux Monts, there is wondrous focus and precision here. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin. This is full of energy and tension, with a killer line of acidity and wonderful structure and precision towards the mineral-rich finish. It will require several years in bottle, but it has the substance and complexity to repay patience.

Always one of my favourite Vosne premiers crus from Mathilde and Etienne Grivot, this textured, stylish, deftly oaked red has all the most appealing features of the 2017 vintage, with lots of sumptuous, summer-pudding fruit, filigree tannins and a foundation of acidity. It's deceptively forward, as this has the minerality and focus to age.

  • Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Suchots 2021 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (93-95)

The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru perhaps has the most mineral-driven bouquet of Grivot’s Premier Crus: graphite-infused red fruit, touches of forest floor, very precise and detailed. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-sculpted tannins. There is unerring symmetry here and whilst it may miss a bit of substance on the finish, this may well be addressed by the time it finishes its élevage. Superb.

Clear bright ruby purple. The nose flickers in and out, and while there is a fine tensile line of red berry fruit, this is not too demonstrative. Perhaps some of the refined detail of an Echezeaux. A slight sucrosity of strawberry fruit, and very persistent. Very good and extremely typical of Suchots this year. Drink from 2030-2038. • Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Suchots 2023 (3x75cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (94-96)

The 2023 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a lifted, perfumed, quite floral bouquet that is more flirtatious than the Les Beaux Monts. The red berry fruit comes out and hugs the senses. Its palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit and fine acidity, conveying a sense of symmetry. It's not a powerful Les Suchots and it just tapers in a little toward the finish. This is very controlled and perhaps more linear than presupposed. This should be intriguing to observe maturing in bottle.

  • Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanee 2014 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (90)

Moderately saturated medium red. Livelier on the nose than the Charmois, with scents of black cherry, graphite and dark chocolate lifted by a floral quality. At once sweet and savory on the palate, with lovely acidity framing the red berry and cherry fruit flavors and extending the finish. Suaver and more pliant than the Charmois but the wine's more serious tannins and an element of peppery lift on the back end call for at least a couple years of patience.
  • Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanee 2017 (1x75cl)

    Decanter (92)

The Grivots make some very smart wines at premier and grand cru level, but don't overlook this village Vosne, made with grapes from 10 parcels and six different terroirs. It's a classic expression of 2017: fresh, juicy and scented, with supple tannins, plenty of succulent red berry fruit, and stylishly integrated 20% new wood. Pure pleasure in the glass.
  • Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanee 2018 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (89-91)

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Village, matured in 20–25% new oak, has a well-defined, almost airy bouquet of red cherries, cranberry and sous-bois aromas that develop rose petal notes with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple opening and quite juicy in style. An attractive peppery finish extends the aftertaste. Very fine.
  • Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanee 2021 (6x75cl)

The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Village has a very pretty nose with brambly red fruit briary and light sous-bois aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with tart red fruit, fine backbone, quite tannic with a touch of white pepper on the finish. A lovely Vosne-Romanée.

  • Jean Jacques Confuron Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 2009 (6x75cl)

Medium red. Fresh, minerally aromas of blackberry, dark plum, licorice and bitter chocolate. At once creamy and gripping in the mouth, with a liqueur-like ripeness nicely buffered by mineral energy. Conveys a lighter touch than most of these 2009s. The long finish shows fine-grained tannins. Really spreads out on the end to saturate the palate. Alain Meunier picked early in 2009 but still finds most of these wines a bit heavy; he told me that he did not acidify.

  • Jean Jacques Confuron Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 2009 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (91)

  • Jean Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc 2008 (6x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (95)

Steely and crisp, with dominating crushed rock like minerality that’s buffered by notions of golden apples, citrus, flowers, toasted nuts, and crème, the 2008 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc fleshes out beautifully in the glass to show a medium to full-bodied, energetic texture, solid concentration, and juicy acidity that shines on the lengthy finish. This took the better part of the evening to fully flesh out, so do not be afraid to give this air if drinking anytime soon. Given the concentration and acid levels, this should age effortlessly for 20+ years.

There is a wealth of great French wine outside the ‘Big 4’ (Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and Rhone). The Languedoc Roussillon with it’s herby, robust Mediterranean reds, Provence with its pale, vinous roses, Loire with its flinty Sauvignons, crunchy Cabernet Francs, and endlessly fascinating Chenins, Jura with its old fashioned curiosities… the list goes on. Tradition and terroir are the veins running through them all, making French wines still the most emulated in the world.
