  • Bachelet-Monnot Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc 2020 (6x75cl)

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)

Pale lemon. An attractive nose without quite attaining the nobility of the Puligny. Excellent siting of the plots. The fruit in the mouth ups the ante though, and this works really well with a delicious quality of fruit. Love the finish and the length.
  • Bachelet-Monnot Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc 2021 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (87-89)

The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Village was cropped at a respectable 30hl/ha due to the late pruning in this vineyard. It has a clean and precise bouquet, quite focused, a light reduction at play in the background. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, fresh and apply with orange rind towards the taut, slightly short but fresh finish. Fine.

Mid lemon yellow. There is a little more generosity of fruit on the nose, this is properly ripe though it came in at 12.5%. It does not need any more. A little bacon fat reduction, perfectly balanced through the middle, enough acidity but not trenchant. More nuanced than Referts, on its way to becoming a very fine wine. Drink from 2028-2036. • Bachelet-Monnot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres 2017 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru sports quite a bit of reduction on the nose that makes the terroir and fruit profile difficult to read. The palate is well balanced, taut and fresh, with a fine bead of acidity and good depth; quite powerful for a Folatières. Fine bitter lemon notes surface on the finish, which is very sapid and more-ish. A long-term wine but well worth cellaring. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru is still backward and reticent on the nose, gunflint and light smoky aromas gently unfold from the glass. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, a little more weighty than expected with touches of apricot and quince towards the citrus-fresh finish that leaves a residue of spice on the tongue. Excellent.

The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru has a very pretty bouquet with hints of apple blossom and apricot yet underneath is the mineralité you seek from a noble vineyard like this. Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)

Tasted: October 2023.

Pale lemon-green color. The aromas of lime, white peach and white flowers reminded me of Chassagne. Rich, pliant and deep, with a lovely sugar/acid balance to its flavors of citrus fruits, flowers and mint. Really echoes and spreads out horizontally on the taut, minerally, very long finish. At this point in our tasting, Marc Bachelet asserted that the brothers' 2011s have more material than their 2010s.

There is a wealth of great French wine outside the ‘Big 4’ (Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and Rhone). The Languedoc Roussillon with it’s herby, robust Mediterranean reds, Provence with its pale, vinous roses, Loire with its flinty Sauvignons, crunchy Cabernet Francs, and endlessly fascinating Chenins, Jura with its old fashioned curiosities… the list goes on. Tradition and terroir are the veins running through them all, making French wines still the most emulated in the world.
