(1x300cl) 2003Wine Advocate (98)
Starting with the 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reserve, this wine showed spectacularly on release, closed down for a few years, and has now emerged, at close to full maturity, and is straight-up fabulous. Out of the entire tasting, it remained my favorite. Giving up gorgeous blackberry, currants, garrigue, pepper and beef blood, it hits the palate with a massive, full-bodied texture that carries layers of sweet fruit, awesome concentration and blockbuster length. Tasting like the essence of both this estate and the terroir, it’s an incredible wine that I’m happy to taste/drink anytime. It will continue to evolve gracefully, but I see no reason to delay gratification.Inc. VAT£677.09 -

A real powerhouse, with muscular layers of fig and black currant compote, backed by braised beef, chestnut, tobacco and tar flavors. The long, mesquite-filled finish lets additional bittersweet cocoa and dark fruit notes linger, with lots of garrigue. Best from 2008 through 2025. 5,000 cases made. -JMInc. VAT£981.10 -

A wine I've probably drunk a case or more of since release, the full-bodied, fat and concentrated 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee is certainly a great wine from this estate. Reminiscent of the 1990 with its voluptuous, sexy and ethereal texture, this still deep ruby colored Chateauneuf du Pape is as Provencal as Provence gets, with killer notes of roasted herbs, soy, beef blood, lavender and garrigue. While this wine was a touch erratic in its youth, recent bottles have been much more consistent and I suspect it's just now starting to enter its long window of prime drinking.Inc. VAT£1,144.30 -

Saturated ruby. A wild, highly expressive bouquet displays red and dark berries, Asian spice and musky garrigue, accented by smoke and game notes in the background. Juicy and precise, with sweet raspberry and cherry flavors that take a bitter turn with air. Tannins come on late and add grip to a long, sappy finish.Inc. VAT£479.15 -

One of my favorite wines, the 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee Réservée is a classic. Beautiful on the nose, with notions of ground pepper, wild herbs, minerality and smoked plum and dark fruit, it’s medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated and has plenty of tannin that comes through on the finish. Similar in style to a lighter-weight 2010, drink this beauty anytime over the coming 12-15 years.Inc. VAT£99.86 -

Savory notes of bramble, smoke and leather juxtapose forward plum, cherry and strawberry in this full-bodied wine. It's a penetrating, mouthfilling sip that lingers on the palate, finishing on soft, furry tannins. Approachable already, this concentrated wine should improve through 2025 and hold further.Inc. Reminding me of a fresher version of the 2003, the 2016 Chateauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Reservée is another magical wine from Laurence Feraud that could come from nowhere else. I still remember tasting (and loving) this beauty from barrel. It doesn’t quite have the sheer over-the-top decadence of the 2003, but it does have more elegance, while not giving up an inch with regard to texture and opulence. Dark ruby/plum-hued with a monster display of Provençal goodness in its garrigue, lavender, violets, kirsch, plums, and Asian spices, this full-throttle, ripe, sexy Châteauneuf du Pape has silky tannins, flawless balance, and a heavenly texture. It’s going to benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and drink well for at least 20-25 years.Inc. VAT£653.50 -

Full bottle 1,292 g. They have been farming this parcel since 2012. It is a south-facing plot, sheltered from the winds due to its location at the end of an amphitheatre of hills around it. Its southerly exposure accounts for its early and complete maturation at harvest time. The soil is silty clay over grey marls, resulting in excellent drainage and low risk of hydric stress. En Barbi was replanted by the previous farmer and the vines are almost 20 years old. For several years, they have been vinifying En Barbi separately from the other Chardonnay plots. From 2018 they released En Barbi Chardonnay as a separate wine. Aged in 500-litre barrels (45%) and foudre (55%). This smells elegant and refined, with herby lemon fruit and a subtle smoky/toasty note, more creamy/oaky than the straight Chardonnay 2020 but the oak is still extremely subtle. Like the Grand Curoulet, this has very high acidity but here the balance is better, with more intensity of fruit though it is still a relatively austere style with a long, salty aftertaste, but perhaps not as persistent as the Chardonnay. Needs time, and it was better on the day after opening so it would probably benefit from decanting if you drink it in its youth.Inc. VAT£87.44 -

The 2012 Pensées de Lafleur comes across a little bretty on the nose, and this obscures some of the terroir expression. I would have liked more complexity here. Has lovely blackberry, milk chocolate and blueberry. Full-bodied, with ultrafine tannins and a long, caressing finish. Balanced and refined, with beautiful tannins. Wonderful length and finesse. Best after 2011. -JSIn Bond£1,080.00 -

A wine, with beautiful flowers, hazelnut and chocolate and dark fruits. It is dense and tight with beautiful quality of tannins. Goes on and on. Texture is amazing. Don't miss it. Second wine of Pomerol's legendary Lafleur. Try in 2016.In Bond£1,114.00 -

This is very minerally with a peach stone and brambleberry character. Full body, with delicately chewy tannins and a long length. Very refined. Very well done for the second wine of Lafleur that made a top 2011. 54% Merlot and 46% Cabernet Franc. In Bond£468.50 -

The 2012 Pensées de Lafleur comes across a little bretty on the nose, and this obscures some of the terroir expression. I would have liked more complexity here. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, solid with good grip, yet it lacks a bit of charm (not that this Pomerol seems overly concerned). Is it holding something back or just a bit too serious? Tasted blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting. In Bond£547.00 -

The 2013 Pensées de Lafleur is expressive, classy and polished to the core. Dark red cherry, plum, spices, menthol all meld together in a resonant, expressive, mid-weight wine long on personality. All the elements fall into place in a gorgeous Pensées with tons of near and medium-term appeal. In this vintage, the Pensées includes fruit from about 400 plants that are typically used for the Grand Vin.In Bond£84.00 -

The 2014 Pensées de Lafleur is showing a touch of greenness on the nose, although I found it well defined and offering attractive tobacco and cigar box notes with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. There is satisfying fruit concentration here, a fine bead of acidity and a harmonious, lightly spiced finish that lingers in the mouth. Excellent.
