  • Pierre Peters Les Chetillons Cuvee Speciale Blanc de Blancs 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (97)

The 2014 Cuvée Spéciale Les Chétillons is fabulous. The 2014 is not as obvious as years like 2012 or 2013, but it presents a youthfully austere, classic personality that is absolutely beguiling. Readers will have to be patient here. There is certainly a lot to look forward to. The 2014 Les Chétillons is a Blanc de Blancs that sizzles with Mesnil tension and energy. Dosage is 3.5-4.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: May, 2021.

  • Pierre Peters Les Chetillons Cuvee Speciale Blanc de Blancs 2015 (1x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (97)

The 2015 Champagne Les Chetillons Brut is delicate but expressive, with white flowers and a hint of confectionary sponge cake aromas. It is a pale straw with a shimmering green hue. Coming off the heels of the 2014 vintage, this is comparatively much more generous and open and is a pleasure to drink now. It has its hallmark stamp of Chetillon despite the warmth of the vintage and is not overblown. Drink 2023-2043.

    Vinous (96)

The 2016 Brut Cuvée Spéciale Les Chétillons is an explosive, heady wine. It is, to me, a quintessentially modern Chétillons that offers plenty of Mesnil energy, yet also has more than enough fruit to avoid any feeling of the austerity that once characterized these wines. Crushed rocks, slate, mint, lemon peel and white flowers are all beautifully delineated throughout. The decision to delay the release of this wine by a year going forward seems very well judged. Today, the 2016 is showing so much better than it did last year. Dosage is 4 grams per liter. Disgorged: July 2023.

Mostly Grenache yet with 15% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre, with 10% Cinsault, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape boasts a vivid purple hue as well as a complex bouquet of red, blue, and black fruits as well as notes of flowers, spice, and peppery garrigue. It actually reminds me of the Cuvée Mon Aïeul with its ripe yet elegant profile. Full-bodied, balanced, and lengthy, it’s going to offer loads of pleasure over the coming 10-15 years.

    Wine Advocate (99)

More precise and focused than the more exuberant, sexy and rounded '00, the 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul is borderline perfection (I seriously considered adding a point here) and a monumental Chateauneuf du Pape that is drinking at point. Kirsch, olive tapenade, roasted meats, tobacco and assorted mature Grenache characteristics give way to a full-bodied, massively endowed, concentrated, gorgeously layered wine that's just about as good as it gets. I kept coming back to this over the evening and it got better and better with air, so while fully mature, it's not going anywhere soon.
  • Pierre Usseglio Chateauneuf-du-Pape Mon Aieul 2003 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (98)

The best bottle of this I've had (and I've had plenty), Usseglio's 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul is a blockbuster and one of the true stars of this vintage. Almost all Grenache (there's a small part of Syrah and Cinsault) that was harvest between September 1-13, partially destemmed and aged in both tank and foudre, this massive, voluptuous effort is almost overflowing with notes of ground herbs, chocolate dusted meats, black fruits and licorice. Showing none of the negative traits of the vintage, with beautiful purity and freshness, sweet tannin, and a great finish, enjoy this utterly hedonistic beauty over the coming 4-5 years.
  • Pierre Usseglio Chateauneuf-du-Pape Mon Aieul 2005 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94)

Showing the firm, slightly masculine (even austere) edge of the vintage, the 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul offers terrific richness in its black fruits, asphalt, roasted herbs, tar and licorice. Big, full-bodied, structured and tannic, drink it anytime over the coming decade or so.

  • Pierre Usseglio Chateauneuf-du-Pape Mon Aieul 2007 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (99)

The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul is just now starting to shed a tiny amount of its abundant baby fat that's been front and center since release. Still, it pulls no punches in its thrilling aromas and flavors of kirsch liqueur, roasted garrigue, black raspberries, incense, cured meats and licorice, and it is about as quintessential Grenache as you can find. Thrillingly concentrated, intense, perfumed and layered with incredible balance, this full-bodied beauty should hit its peak in another 2-3 years and keep for at least a decade after that.

Full ruby. Intense black raspberry and mulberry aromas are complicated by suggestions of Asian spices, licorice and musky herbs. Bright and sappy on the palate, with a seamless texture to the spice-accented red and dark berry compote flavors. Notes of lavender and allspice carry through the long, juicy, nicely focused finish. I suspect that this wine will drink well on the young side.

  • Pierre Usseglio Chateauneuf-du-Pape Mon Aieul 2010 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (98+)

The Usseglio’s consider the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul to be their greatest to date. I’ve done numerous tastings with the 2010 and 2007 side by side, and more times than not, I think the 2007 is the better wine. Time will tell though, and both are sensational wines that readers should have in their cellars. The inky colored 2010 is 100% Grenache fermented with 30% stems and aged in a combination of older barrels and foudre. More focused and precise than the '07 (and even darker in color), yet still with massive concentration and depth, it offers deep, rich notes of blackberries, cassis, ground herbs, pepper and crushed rocks. Full-bodied, thick and layered on the palate, it never puts a foot wrong, has fabulous purity and a blockbuster finish. It needs 3-4 years of cellaring, but will have 20-25 years of longevity.
  • Pierre Usseglio Chateauneuf-du-Pape Mon Aieul 2012 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (95)

Similar in style to the 2006, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul is rounded and textured, with tons of charm in its blackberry, black raspberry, violets, garrigue and spice aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, supple and textured, it shows the vintage's upfront and forward character, yet has beautiful purity of fruit and enough density to drink nicely through 2027. Most 2012s are already showing nicely, and this is no exception.

Getting more than one exclamation in the notes, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de Mon Aïeul is a deep, rich yet vibrant red that offers a kaleidoscope of kirsch liqueur, garrigue, crushed flowers, Asian spices, and cured meats. It's more opulent and sexier than the 2010, fresher and purer than the 2007, has deep, full-bodied aromas and flavors, and a huge finish. It's a sensational, heavenly Châteauneuf-du-Pape that tops out my scale. This cuvée is 100% Grenache that was not destemmed and was aged in 20% demi-muids and the balance in concrete tanks.

  • Pierre Usseglio Chateauneuf-du-Pape Mon Aieul 2019 (6x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (98+)

One of the top handful of wines in the vintage, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée De Mon Aïeul is all Grenache, from the different terroirs (one sand, one clay, and one limestone) that was 50% destemmed and aged all in older demi-muids. Reminding me of the 2007 with its incredible perfume of ripe black raspberries, strawberries, flowery incense, peppery and Provençal garrigue, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a round, expansive texture, gorgeous tannins, and a blockbuster of a finish. A wine of incredibly purity, precision, and elegance, yet also with power and opulence, this sensational effort is in need of 3-4 years of bottle age and will keep for two decades.

The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée De Mon Aïeul is all Grenache (from three terroirs) that was not destemmed and is still resting all in used demi-muids. Incredible aromatics of blackberries, ground pepper, toasted spice, raspberries, and flowers all emerge from this deep, full-bodied, yet wonderfully elegant barrel sample that makes the most of this great vintage. It’s going to drink brilliantly for 15-20 years with no issues, and I’d certainly put this up with the top handful of wines in the vintage.

  • Pierre Usseglio Chateauneuf-du-Pape Mon Aieul 2022 (6x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (97)

The crème de la crème of the vintage, the 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée De Mon Aïeul is 100% whole cluster fermented Grenache raised mostly in demi-muids. It doesn't get more Provençal than this beauty, whose deeper ruby hue is followed by a killer nose of darker cherries, blackberries, olive tapenade, licorice, and peppery garrigue. With medium to full-bodied richness, the sun-kissed, perfumed, complex style of the vintage, ample opulence and fat, and sweet, integrated tannins, it's a stunning, classic expression of this cuvée to enjoy over the coming 10-15 years. There's no Reserve Des Deux Freres in the vintage, as the team didn't feel it was warranted in the vintage.

There's a single barrel of the 2016 Châteauneuf Du Pape Not For You, which is 100% Grenache from the Les Serres lieu-dit from the oldest vines of the estate. It wasn’t destemmed and spent two years in a neutral barrel. It offers an incredible bouquet of kirsch, blackberries, incense, white flowers, garrigue and spice that develops beautifully with time in the glass. Rich, powerful, full-bodied, and concentrated, it nevertheless glides over the palate with no weight, ultra-fine tannins, and a singular, exotic, lengthy style.

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Not For You is flat-out awesome, and Grenache doesn't get any better in this reviewer's opinion. Coming from 100-year-old vines in the Les Serres lieu-dit, in the southern end of the appellation, it was not destemmed and was brought up in a single new demi-muid. Incredible aromatics of darker berries, Provençal garrigue, ground pepper, lavender, and leather are just some of its nuances, and this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, layered, opulent mouthfeel, full-bodied richness, ripe tannins, and a great, great finish. While this is a massive wine by any measure, it's not over the top, stays perfectly balanced, has ripe tannins, and is an incredibly singular wine. Unfortunately, it will be just about impossible to find in the market. If you're lucky enough to find a bottle, it should be at its best from 2026-2041.

    Vinous (93)

  • Pierre Usseglio Chateauneuf-du-Pape Mon Aieul 2020 (6x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (96-98)

  • Pierre Usseglio Chateauneuf-du-Pape Not For You 2016 (1x150cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (100)

  • Pierre Usseglio Chateauneuf-du-Pape Not For You 2019 (1x150cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (100)

There is a wealth of great French wine outside the ‘Big 4’ (Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and Rhone). The Languedoc Roussillon with it’s herby, robust Mediterranean reds, Provence with its pale, vinous roses, Loire with its flinty Sauvignons, crunchy Cabernet Francs, and endlessly fascinating Chenins, Jura with its old fashioned curiosities… the list goes on. Tradition and terroir are the veins running through them all, making French wines still the most emulated in the world.
