The 2012 Pouilly Fuissé la Croix Vieilles Vignes comes from schist soils and even in nascent form it boasts a vibrant, energetic stony nose that shimmers in the glass. Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90)

Full ruby-red. Sexy aromas of black raspberry and licorice. Sweet, ripe and fairly deep, with good energy to the flavors of black fruits, licorice and spices. Finishes with very good breadth, life and length. An impressive showing for this Cotes de Bourg wine.
  • Roc de Cambes 2011 (6x75cl)
    (6x75cl) 2011

    Vinous - Ian D'Agata (90-92)

Bright ruby-red. Knockout nose offers captivating scents of superripe red cherry, Oriental spices, vanilla, milk chocolate and coffee. Creamy-rich and dense, with compelling sweetness to its red fruit, sweet spice and aromatic herb flavors. Finishes very fine-grained and long, with a wonderfully mouthcoating texture. There has never been a Roc de Cambes at this level. I imagine that over time it won't develop the complexity and depth of a first growth, but in 2011 this is simply one of the overachievers wines of the vintage.
  • Roc de Cambes 2012 (6x75cl)
    (6x75cl) 2012

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (93)

A dark, imposing wine, the 2012 Roc des Cambes is distinctly dark and brooding. Black cherries, smoke, licorice, tar and dark spices fleshed [?]. Vertical in style and quite structured, the 2012 could use another few years in bottle to fully come together, which will also help the chewy tannins to integrate a bit more fully. Roc des Cambes is 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Malbec that spend 18 months in 100% new French oak.

The 2013 is super-ripe, racy and layered, but in the soft, silky style of the year. Roc de Cambes is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 100% new oak barrels. • Roc de Cambes 2016 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (94)

The 2016 Roc de Cambes is powerful, tightly wound and closed in on itself. That should not be an issue, but readers should be prepared to be patient. Iron, smoke, tobacco, cedar, menthol and licorice all add aromatic nuance to a core of dark fruit. I also tasted a bottle that had been opened two days prior. There I found a wine of amplitude and breadth. This is another superb 2016 from the Mitjavile family.

The 2017 Roc de Cambes is even better from bottle than it was from barrel. Rich, dense and explosive, with tremendous power the 2017 is positively stellar from the very first taste. Macerated dark cherries, sage, spice, star anise, orange zest, mint and new leather give the 2017 an exotic, racy feel that is hard to fully describe. The 2020 Pouilly-Fuissé La Croix Vieilles Vignes undergoes a three-year élevage. These vines on deep blue schist soils create a warm microclimate so that the potential alcohol levels can be two or three degrees higher than elsewhere. It has a linear and focused bouquet that disguises the warmth of the terroir with style. The palate is vibrant on the entry, a superb line of acidity, quite saline yet there is real substance towards the finish. There is a sense of completeness to this Pouilly-Fuissé with just a touch of spiciness lingering on the aftertaste. Strongly recommended.

The 2022 Chardonnay has turned out beautifully, bursting with aromas of pear, white flowers, bread dough and hazelnuts, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy palate with a satiny attack that segues into a charming, lively mid-palate, with good cut and a saline finish. Dancer sold off two-thirds of his crop in 2021, but the quality of his raw materials in 2022 should permit a less draconian selection.

  • Roc de Cambes 2006 (12x75cl)
    (12x75cl) 2006

Sweet red berries, hard candy, crushed flowers, spices and mint are some of the many notes that meld together in the glass as the 2013 Roc de Cambes opens up in the glass. The 2013 is super-ripe, racy and layered, but in the soft, silky style of the year. Roc de Cambes is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 100% new oak barrels. The style is all about texture and silkiness. The 2013 finishes with sweet floral and spice notes, as well as terrific freshness.

  • Roc de Cambes 2017 (1x75cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (94)

The 2017 Roc de Cambes is even better from bottle than it was from barrel. Rich, dense and explosive, with tremendous power the 2017 is positively stellar from the very first taste. Macerated dark cherries, sage, spice, star anise, orange zest, mint and new leather give the 2017 an exotic, racy feel that is hard to fully describe. In the glass, the 2017 possesses off the charts aromatic intensity and tons of pure fruit richness, while the 100% new oak is barely perceptible. Readers lucky enough to find it will enjoy a wine of tremendous character and personality. This is an absolutely stunning wine from Francois and Nina Mitjavile.

There is a wealth of great French wine outside the ‘Big 4’ (Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and Rhone). The Languedoc Roussillon with it’s herby, robust Mediterranean reds, Provence with its pale, vinous roses, Loire with its flinty Sauvignons, crunchy Cabernet Francs, and endlessly fascinating Chenins, Jura with its old fashioned curiosities… the list goes on. Tradition and terroir are the veins running through them all, making French wines still the most emulated in the world.
