The 2013 Cuvée S is a young icon in the making. A delayed growing season with heat during the summer and a late harvest yielded a superb, wonderfully complex Salon, a Champagne that balances ripeness, acid and structure. Citrus, slate and floral overtones appear first, before hints of white pepper and chalk add layers of saline-infused intensity. The clarity and precision here are just unreal.Inc. VAT£1,107.31 -

Wine Advocate (95)
From a recently released bottle disgorged in 2018, the 1997 Blanc de Blancs Le Mesnil Brut is showing very well indeed, offering up aromas of citrus oil, crushed chalk, white flowers, warm bread and iodine that are appreciably more youthful than the more mature dried fruit tones that readers will find in bottles of the original disgorgement. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, tensile and incisive, with superb concentration, chalky structure and a long, searingly mineral finish. The 2018 disgorgement saw 3.5 grams per liter dosage, somewhat less than the original release. While the 1996 has the edge, I doubt that, 20 years ago, anyone could have imagined how close the 1997 and 1996 would be as they approach maturity.Inc. VAT£1,193.71 -

The 2021 Chablis Les Fourneaux 1er Cru has a superb bouquet with scents of dried honey, wax resin and flinty aromas, powerful and very well focused. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh, lovely salinity lending tension and persistence on the finish. As good a Fourneaux as you will find.Inc. VAT£566.47 -

(from Côte de Près Girots and Morein). A discreet but not invisible application of wood sets off aromas of slightly riper white and yellow peach with subtle Chablis influence, in particular iodine. There is again excellent volume to the sappy and beguilingly textured medium weight flavors that possess solid power if limited refinement on the citrus rind and quinine-inflected finish that is firm enough to repay mid-term keeping.Inc. VAT£352.40 -

5 Star Wine. Bottled November. Clear mid lemon. The nose is stricter than the 2023, more a classic Vaillons, with mineral purity, white fruit, plenty of flesh but nicely balanced by the lees work. Very long finish here, an exceptionally fine Vaillons. The aftertaste just keeps on delivering. Drink from 2027-2035. Tasted Jun 2024.Inc. VAT£503.09 -

The 2010 Chablis Mont de Milieu has turned out beautifully. A gentle hint of spices from the oak frames layers of gorgeous, nuanced fruit. The 2010 shows the depth of the low yields with the minerality of a cool vintage and a finish is both huge and seemingly endless. It is a marvelous, complete wine that can be enjoyed now or cellared. This is a great showing from Samuel Billaud.Inc. VAT£90.53 -
Vinous (94)
The 2017 Chablis Mont de Milieu 1er Cru is an absolutely exquisite rendering of this site. Rich, layered and beautifully resonant in the glass, the 2017 possesses tons of depth, energy and complexity. Dried pear, marzipan, lemon confit, spice, petrol, dried flowers and chamomile are some of the many notes that grace this wonderfully inviting Chablis from Samuel Billaud.Inc. VAT£104.39 -
Vinous (92-94)
The 2018 Chablis Mont de Milieu 1er Cru is one of the stand outs in this range. Ample and creamy, the 2018 is so wonderfully inviting, even in the early going. All the elements just come together effortlessly. Orchard fruit, citrus confit, spice, wild flowers and a touch of new oak all grace this super-expressive Chablis. The 2018 was done 80% in tank and 20% in a 450-liter oak barrel.Inc. VAT£104.93 -
Wine Advocate (93+)
The 2019 Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu is another taut, structured wine that had only recently been bottled when I tasted it. Unwinding in the glass with notes of orange oil, oyster shell, beeswax, buttery pastry and white flowers, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and precise, with a tightly wound core and a long, saline finish.Inc. VAT£93.59 -
Vinous (92-94)
The 2021 Chablis Mont de Milieu 1er Cru is matured 80% in stainless steel and 20% in barrels for 12 months whereupon it is blended and raised for another six months. This has one of the more austere and backward bouquets from Billaud this year - one for hardcore Chablis-lovers. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, austere and linear, very saline - a serious Chablis that should only be consumed with a large plate of seafood.Inc. VAT£91.45 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (94)
The 2022 Chablis Mont de Milieu 1er Cru has a tightly wound nose with a hint of seaweed (Japanese wakame) infusing the malic aromas. The palate is taut and fresh, crisp and linear with fine grip, quite classical in style, which is amazing in such a hot growing season. Real nervosité and tension on the sapid finish—superb. Bottled under Diam 30. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.Inc. VAT£111.59 -

The 2023 Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu is a tensile, incisive wine that opens in the glass with notes of orange peel, beeswax and gooseberry mingled with oyster juice. Medium- to full-bodied, it is taut and precise, with a tightly coiled core and a mouthwatering, saline-tinged finish.Inc. VAT£112.13 -

Cool, inward and impeccably layered from start to finish, the 2010 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre impresses for its fabulous sense of balance and poise. Slate, crushed rocks, lime and white flowers are woven together in a fabric of unusual class and elegance. All the elements fuse together impeccably here. This is a gorgeous Chablis, but it will require patience. Today the 2010 is quite reticent, but the pedigree is evident.Inc. VAT£101.33 -

The 2016 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre, which underwent 15 months in barrel, has a lovely dried honey and beeswax scented bouquet that gains intensity with aeration. The 2018 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru comes from a hectare of 45-year-old vines and was vinified in stainless steel vats and 450-liter barrels before aging for 18 months on the lees. It has a pretty nose of orange blossom, white peach and Japanese yuzu scents that are beautifully defined. The palate is very well balanced, with Granny Smith apples and pear on the entry, a vibrant thread of acidity, and quite a linear, taut finish that is perhaps more 2017 in style. Overall, this is a superb Montée de Tonnerre for those who like "classic" Chablis.Inc. VAT£145.19 -

Moderate but not invasive oak frames the elegant, airy and quite pretty aromas of white flowers, various citrus and oyster shell wisps. (from a 2.5 ha parcel of 35+ year old vines – two thirds of the blend is from Chapelot and the remainder is from Pied d’Aloup and Montée de Tonnerre proper; the Pied d’Aloup vines were planted in 1935). This would be difficult to mistake for anything other than Chablis with its aromatic profile of oyster shell, iodine, citrus and acacia blossom, all trimmed in a delicate dollop of oak. The super-sleek, intense and stylish middle weight flavors are also quite classy and I very much like the balance. This is also notably firmer and very much built-to age. Excellent. (92-94)/2030+Inc. The 2021 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru retains its serious and backward nose, very saline and still with that faint tang of kelp/Japanese nori. The palate is beautifully balanced with a keen thread of acidity, notes of orange rind and a more malic finish than I recall, yet with the same wondrous elegance and poise. This will age wonderfully in bottle and require time for the aromatics to awaken.Inc. VAT£703.00
