The 2020 Cornas Chaillot comes from a mix of lieux-dits (it's mostly Chaillot) as well as some younger vines. It's an incredible wine in its own right and certainly doesn't give much in terms quality to its big brother. Awesome aromatics of crème de cassis, violets, crushed stone, and bouquet garni-like notes all define the aromatics, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, concentrated mid-palate, and ultra-fine tannins. It's a touch more finesse-driven and elegant compared to the Reynard and should round into form with just 5-7 years of bottle age. This is legit awesome Cornas that will have 20-25 years of ultimate longevity.Inc. VAT£3,389.95 -

The 2021 Cornas Chaillot outperforms the rustic 2020 I tasted on the same occasion. Ripe black fruit, graphite, cedar, stemmy facets and peppery nuances are all amplified in the glass. Intense and expressive, the medium- to full-bodied 2021 is a gorgeous Chaillot, packing a stunning energetic lift on the mid-palate. Checking out with timeless elegance on the refined finish, the 2021 is a showstopper.Inc. VAT£2,184.41 -

Inky purple. Deeper and more powerful on the nose than the Chaillot, displaying pungent aromas of cassis, boysenberry, violet, dark chocolate and licorice. Surprisingly lithe on the palate following the richness of the nose, offering vibrant dark berry flavors and a note of refreshingly bitter cherry skin. Turns spicier with air, finishing with strong cut and a persistent floral quality. I really like this wine's blend of masculine character and vibrancy.Inc. VAT£498.97 -

Coming from the oldest vines of the estate and one of the best vineyards in the world for Syrah, the 2012 Cornas Reynard is a massive, thick and unctuous effort that's bursting at the seams with notions of crème de cassis, crushed violets, smoked game and incredible minerality. Just a sensational Cornas that surpasses what was achieved in 2009 and 2010, this full-bodied, concentrated and structured effort has the fruit to be enjoyable now (this is a common trait of the vintage), yet has the depth, richness and balance to evolve for over two decades. It doesn't come cheap, but it's up there with some of the finest Syrahs made.Inc. VAT£2,557.92 -

The 2020 Franc de Pied is incredibly reductive when it was first opened and needed a lot of time and a swirl with a copper coin. If you can be patient (5 minutes with a penny in your glass, or your currency's equivalent), it's worth the wait. It reveals itself to be a richly fruited, savory style that fills the mouth with a balloon of chalky silkiness. The limestone element really shows itself on the long finish, all finely grained texture and sinew. As you'd hope from Saumur-Champigny, there's no sense of weight or heft. The 2021 Franc de Pied is mellow and supple yet precise, with its line of 2021 vintage acidity piercing its core and pulling it tight. Savory and herbal, it shows aromas reminiscent of fennel, wormwood, black olives and violets. It has a floaty-light, gentle nature, a sense of roundness and notable purity of fruit, which all elevate it above the crowd. The delicate extraction of fine tannins is commendable.
