The 2021 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru was the one wine from this vineyard that performed far above my initial expectations from barrel. It has a bright and perky nose: red cherries, wild strawberry and raspberry scents with a background of limestone emerging over time. The oak is neatly assimilated here and it blossoms in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, fleshy yet still with sufficient grip. This fans out nicely on the finish, which feels elegant and understated. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, poised and pretty, revealing orange peel and touches of ginger toward the finish. Drink over the next 12–15 years.Inc. VAT£481.07 -

This has one of my favourite noses from Vougeraie; it's quite refined and complex, more mineral-driven with hints of dried white flowers. The palate is well balanced with a tangy opening, fresh and crisp with a touch of bitter lemon and orange rind towards the finish. This should age well in bottle and conveys a sense of class.Inc. The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Bel-Air 1er Cru comes from vines close to the forest, leaving it vulnerable to hungry boars. Quite lithe and supple, with gentle grip and a well-defined, minerally finish. Recommended.Inc. VAT£466.32 -

The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, quite fleshy and velvety-smooth in texture. There is more density here on the finish, which shows touches of spice and marmalade and fans out nicely. There are two barrels of the 2016 Musigny Grand Cru, one new and one used, 100% whole bunch. There is much more gusto on the nose compared to the Bonnes-Mares, with upfront, expressive red cherry, wild strawberry and cold stone aromas, later complemented by wilted rose petals and bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied, but there is much more body and presence here compared to the Bonnes-Mares: fine tannin, just the right amount of salinité with a complex and sustained finish.
