Lush and thick but enlivened by tangy, redder fruit qualities, as well as by a strong note of iodine. As with the 2009, the 2010 Côte Rôtie La Turque represents the pinnacle of red wine and, in this reviewer’s opinion, couldn’t be any better. A dense purple color is followed by a powerful, masculine wine that has textbook ripe blackberry and cassis fruits interwoven with gorgeous floral, gamey, bloody, and exotic aromas and flavors. It’s concentrated, full-bodied, and multi-dimensional on the palate, with sweet, polished tannins, and a massive finish. Similar to the La Mouline with its forward, incredibly sexy style, the 2012 Côte Rôtie La Turque (there’s 7% Viognier in the blend) offers a saturated purple color to go with meaty, smoky notes of cassis, cured meats, chocolate and roasted herbs. It’s a big mouthful of a wine, with full-bodied richness and a stacked mid-palate, but it has a seamless, weightless texture, perfectly ripe tannin and a blockbuster finish. The concept of blending some white wine in to red to bring added perfume is now widely used worldwide, but it was in Cote Rotie where the concept originated. Whether Viognier supplements the Syrah or not, these are the most elegant wines in the Rhone, silky and refined, with different styles made from the sandy Cote Blonde and the irony clay Cote Brune.
