Masculine and burly, the 2006 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque is an absolutely stunning effort that delivers explosive aromas of rusted iron, blood, and crushed rock that are supported by smoky, meaty dark fruits. Ripe and concentrated on the palate, with full bodied power and depth, perfect balance, and huge underlying structure and tannin the comes through on the finish, this is actually approachable now given the level of fruit and texture; however, this needs 8-10 years bottle age, and should drink well for decades!

The 2007 Cote Rotie la Turque is an elegant, seamless example of this cuvee that offers sensational notes of smoked meats, truffles, blackberries and cassis, as well as a hint of tapenade with time in the glass. It has a rich, unctuous and full-bodied profile on the palate, with sweet, sweet tannin and an utterly seamless texture that makes it go down way too easy. Drink this beauty anytime over the coming two decades or more.

Glass-staining ruby. Sexy, floral- and spice-accented aromas of candied cherry, black raspberry and cola, with a subtle suggestion of vanilla in the background. Offers an array of lively red and dark fruit and floral pastille flavors that gain flesh and weight with aeration. Closer in style to the Mouline than the Landonne this year. Closes spicy and extremely long, with suave tannins and lingering sweetness.

Both the 2010 and the 2009 continue to blow me away every time I taste them, and to me, these represent the pinnacle of Cote Rotie—albeit in very different styles. Every bit as good as the 2010, the 2009 Cote Rotie la Turque is a flamboyant and sexy Cote Rotie that’s loaded with notions of smoked meats, blackberries, blackcurrants, beef blood and espresso roast. Thick, unctuous, hugely concentrated and long, it’s a heavenly wine I guarantee will put a smile on your face anytime over the coming 2-3 decades.

The 2011 Cote Rotie la Turque is about as seamless and sexy as wine gets, and this cuvee continues to put on weight and richness with every passing year. Offering a monstrous nose of Asian spices, kirsch liqueur, blackcurrants, pepper and smoked meats, this full-bodied Cote Rotie has layers of sweet tannin, no hard edges and a killer finish. It's already hard to resist today, but has three decades of prime drinking to go.

(made with 50 percent whole clusters) Inky ruby. Bright, intensely perfumed aromas of red and blue fruits, Indian spices and potpourri are energized by a smoky mineral quality. Juicy, focused and pure, displaying deeply concentrated but lively boysenberry and cherry liqueur flavors, along with hints of candied flowers and five-spice powder. Echoes the floral and spicy notes on the strikingly long, penetrating finish, which features harmonious tannins and a hint of bitter chocolate.

It's got those classic Côte Rôtie elements on the nose of smoked bacon, olives and violets, seamlessly entwined with supple tannins and raspberry fruit. Medium to full-bodied, it's silky and fine, showing tremendous length and complexity on the finish. On this occasion, La Turque came to the head of the class as the most approachable, exciting and elegant of the three La Las.

Again, the balance feels very natural and easy as it does with the other 2016 La-Las, with a harmonious, shapely, tapered finish. Extremely elegant expression of Côte-Rôtie, with perfect balance of tannin, acidity and alcohol.

Decanter (98)

Lighter and more perfumed than the 2017 La Turque, more aerial in aroma, violets. I love the smoothness of the tannins, the silkiness on the palate. Again, the balance feels very natural and easy as it does with the other 2016 La-Las, with a harmonious, shapely, tapered finish. Extremely elegant expression of Côte-Rôtie, with perfect balance of tannin, acidity and alcohol.

This quintessential La Turque will deliver plenty of charm in its youth, yet benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age, and age for 30-35 years as well.

As with the other single vineyards in 2018, the purity of fruit is off the charts, it's full-bodied, has incredible tannins, perfect balance, and a finish that won't quit. It shows that classic 2018 ripeness with no sensation of weight or heaviness. It too has some up-front appeal but won't hit maturity for another 7-8 years, if not a decade, and is a 30-year-wine.

The 2019 Côte Rôtie La Turque reminds me slightly of the 2010, which at a recent tasting I thought was the greatest young wine I had ever tasted. The 2019 reveals a saturated purple hue as well as insane aromatics of bloody blue and red fruits, roasted meats, iron, ground pepper, and graphite, with perfectly integrated background oak. With full-bodied richness as well as a deep, layered, multi-dimensional mouthfeel, it has building tannins, flawless balance, and a finish that won't quit. This is an absolutely legendary Côte Rôtie in the making. It deserves 7-8 years of bottle age and will see its 30th birthday in fine form.

From Tartaras, Truchet and Bonniviere: Intensely floral, showing spicy violet and rose qualities along with fresh red berries and black pepper. From Gerine and Landonne: Red and dark berries on the nose. Deeper dark berries and cherry on the palate, with firm tannins adding grip and cracked pepper lending energy. From Chavaroche and Fongeant: Wild perfume of botanical herbs, cherry skin, tobacco and smoked meat. This component gives the animal quality to the wine, Jamet said. From Lancement and Le Plomb: Rich and smoky, with deep cherry and cassis flavors and gentle tannins. From Mornachon: Exotic cherry-cola, coconut and baking spices on the nose. Fleshy and sweet, with deep dark fruit flavors and good back-end sweetness. A demi-muid from Mornachon: Explosively perfumed bouquet of ripe red berries, incense and potpourri. Luscious and concentrated, with sweet red and dark berry flavors and an exotic floral pastille quality. From Moutonnes, Cote Baudin and Leyat: Intensely smoky nose offers a complex set of red fruit and floral aromas and a strong note of graphite. Impressively pure and sweet, with strong raspberry and kirsch flavors and gentle tannins. A demi-muid, from Lancement and Le Plomb: Strikingly perfumed bouquet of red berries, violet, rose and black pepper. Juicy, finely etched raspberry and wild strawberry flavors boast excellent depth and very good clarity. The final wine should be graceful and impressively complex, with vivid red fruit flavors and supple texture.

Inky ruby. A vibrant spice- and mineral-accented bouquet evokes ripe black raspberry and blueberry, candied flowers, incense and peppery spices. Sweet, palate-staining red and blue fruit compote and violet pastille flavors are complicated by notes of cracked pepper and bitter chocolate, with a spicecake nuance gaining strength in the glass. Velvety, pliant tannins add gentle grip to a strikingly long and incisive finish that strongly repeats the floral and mineral notes.
