(3x75cl) 2018Jancis Robinson (18)
Much darker in fruit character than the Charmes-Chambertin was at first but not yet savoury. A delicate dustiness of stones. Chewy on the palate though the tannins seem to be infused with fruit, and there’s a flash of freshness. The finish has a lightly sour note to balance the sweetness of fruit.Inc. VAT£2,896.38 -
Vinous (94-96)
The 2019 Mazy-Chambertin Grand Cru is clearly a step up from the Charmes-Chambertin, offering deeper and more intense red fruit, rose petal and undergrowth aromas. There is also a more tangible marine influence at play here. The palate is medium-bodied with very good structure. Elegant and poised toward the finish, which leaves hints of tobacco and truffle on the aftertaste. Superb. Quintessentially Rousseau.Inc. VAT£1,171.46 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (94)
The 1980 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru continues to shine on the nose with satisfying vigour considering vintage and age, comely scents of red cherry, desiccated orange peel, subtle fungal and irony notes crescendo with aeration. The palate is fresh and harmonious, built around perfectly pitched acidity and a pliant, naturally, fully mature finish that still exudes mineralité. Add to the canon of exceptional 1980 red Burgundies. Tasted at the Rousseau Ruchottes vertical in September 2013.Inc. VAT£3,711.48 -

Fresher, deeper red. Much more complex aromas of black cherry, raspberry, leather, game, herbs and spices. Suave, silky and concentrated; fresher than the Clos de la Roche thanks to harmonious acids. Really seamless texture. Finishes with well-buffered tannins, very good grip and strong fruit.Inc. VAT£2,198.65 -

The 1988 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru shows considerable degradation in colour. The bouquet is autumnal, with vestiges of red cherries and tangible marine and moorland scents, and background orange pith. The palate is medium-bodied and has a lilting quality, but there is grip here, quite chalky in texture and obviously with less flesh than either the 1985 or 1990, so you have to accept its brittle finish. Yet there is vigour and poise from start to finish, conveying a sense of class and sophistication. Tasted at the Rousseau Ruchottes vertical in September 2013.Inc. VAT£1,691.02 -
Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-92)
Medium red-ruby. Superripe, liqueur-like aromas of red berries, spices and minerals. Dense, silky and sweet; a bit more harmonious, complex and perfumed at this early stage than the Clos de la Roche. Finishes with ripe tannins, plenty of verve and sneaky persistence.Inc. VAT£1,903.32 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (90)
The 2001 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru is fully mature on the nose, with ferrous red fruit, quite light, scents of bacon fat and mortadella emerging with time. The palate has a grainy entry, again quite ferrous, although juxtaposed against the superior '02, this lacks a bit of flesh and feels attenuated towards the finish. Drink in the near future.Inc. VAT£2,795.87 -
Vinous (90)
Medium cherry-red. Deep, complex, expressive aromas of red fruits, smoke, earth and underbrush. Sweet, fat and smooth but with a medicinal reserve to its black cherry and mineral flavors. Conveys a strong impression of saline soil tones. The Clos de la Roche seems riper but this is more minerally and taut.Inc. VAT£1,454.52 -

From east-facing, forty year old vines, this doesn't always get the plaudits that some Rousseau wines receive, but it's an amazing wine. There are two types of limestone in the vineyard here (yellow and white) and together they make this is a very sappy, chalky, refreshing wine, an impression that's enhanced by the acidity of the wine. Subtle, sweet and silky, with a tangy, mouthwatering finish.Inc. VAT£2,433.84 -

Wine Advocate (96)
The 2014 Ruchottes Chambertin Grand Cru takes time to unfurl in the glass, eventually opening out with dark berry fruit, a touch of briary and blueberry, and a suggestion of sea spray. It is paradoxically intense but subtle. The palate is medium-bodied and here, it just shows the wood a little more than say, the Clos de la Roche. There is good density here, but it is the acidity that drives this forward and imparts so much tension. This is a Ruchottes that rivets you to the spot.Inc. VAT£8,182.32 -

The 2015 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru is not to be outdone by the 2016. It has a stunning bouquet with mineral-laden red fruit, very focused and shimmering with almost nascent energy. The palate has exquisite balance so that it feels almost nonchalant in style. Slightly grainy tannins frame the dark berry fruit, leading to quite a weighty and authoritative finish that suggests a long road ahead. Magnificent.Inc. VAT£4,070.76 -

The 2021 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru is much more introspective on the nose compared to the Clos de la Roche or Mazy, displaying dark berry fruit, loam and blackcurrant pastilles. Maybe not quite the mineralité of previous vintages? The palate is medium-bodied with orange rind and allspice on the entry. Showing fine weight, there's a little sinew within this cuvée and a tobacco-tinged finish. Quite a "serious" 2021 from Rousseau - I am fascinated to see how this will show once in bottle.Inc. Arnaud Ente's 2015 Bourgogne Aligoté offers up aromas of crisp yellow orchard fruit, blanched almond and honeysuckle—the prelude to a medium-bodied, bright and vibrant wine, with succulent acids, lovely extract and almost crystalline purity. This bottling hails from old vines planted in the commune of Meursault and is routinely one of the finest examples of this variety to be found in all the Côte d'Or. Indeed, while Aligoté is seldom cellared, this will really blossom with a few years' sleep: the 2008, for example, is at the peak of its powers today.Inc. VAT£810.53 -

This was followed by the 2016 Bourgogne Aligoté from Domaine Arnaud Ente. “Best wine in the range?” I half-jested, in praise of Ente’s Aligoté rather than disparaging his Chardonnays. Pale silvery in hue, it offers attractive scents of white flowers and apricot blossom, linden and hints of lemon verbena. The palate is well balanced, although I would have liked a little more tension toward the stem-ginger-tinged finish, which I felt was a little “woolly.”Inc. VAT£850.12
