(6x75cl) 2001Vinous (93)
Saturated ruby-red; one of the darkest 2001s I tasted in Burgundy this fall. Very ripe aromas of dark berries, tar and licorice show a porty quality but in a fresh way. Quite rich and plush but youthful in the mouth, with harmonious acidity giving shape to the complex, spicy flavors of dark berries, black cherry and licorice complicated by leather and flowers. This is really stuffed with fruit: no hole in the middle here! The fine-grained, slightly dusty tannins arrive late. Emmanuel Humbert described this wine as a vin de garde style from the start, with the sound malic acidity that's to his taste. He noted that 2001 was a bit like 2010 in that the wines started out austere. He was also punching down much more back then, and this is certainly a classic, slowly evolving Burgundy.Inc. Bright, dark red. Crushed black and blue fruits lifted by violet on the nose (black fruits are a sign of great phenolic maturity, noted Humbert). More minerally than the Petite Chapelle, with an element of complexity that comes from successful ripening in a cool combe. Should make a terrific accompaniment to game dishes.Inc. VAT£434.14 -

Deep red. Black- and redcurrant, blackberry and licorice on the rather cool nose. Surprisingly supple and slightly high-toned in a positive way, with its blackberry and spice flavors complicated by saline minerality. Offers good stuffing for village wine and finishes tactile, savory and sweet. This wine continued to draw me back for another sip.In Bond£106.00 -

(50% new oak): Good medium-dark red. Slightly reduced aromas of black raspberry, cherry, mocha and minerals; one can sense the cool combe influence (vines in Les Marchais make up about half of this blend). Offers subtle mid-palate sweetness along with serious rocky, salty minerality. Finishes firm but not hard, with good energy and length. Humbert likes this village wine for its taut side in 2016.In Bond£99.00 -

Reminding me of the 2020, the 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape is based on 60% Grenache, 16% each Mourvèdre and Cinsault, and the rest Syrah. Its medium ruby hue is followed by a gorgeous perfume of black raspberries, white pepper, Provençal garrigue, and crushed stone-like minerality. With medium to full-bodied richness, a seamless, layered mouthfeel, and ripe, polished, yet building tannins, it's an absolute gem in the vintage that will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and cruise over the following decade or more.In Bond£331.50 -
