Showing better from bottle than barrels, the 2021 Château Lagrange has a healthy ruby/purple hue to go with a gorgeous nose of blackcurrants, violets, chalky minerality, and graphite. It's rich, medium-bodied, has a concentrated, layered mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. It's a seriously impressive, layered, concentrated 2021 with tons to love. The blend is 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot, aged 21 months in 50% new barrels. Give bottles 2-4 years and enjoy over the following 15+.

Continuing a run of exceptional vintages where everything seems to be going right at this property. High Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, and it comes across in the sleek black fruits and peony character, very much floral and finessed. Good stuff, this is impressive, enjoyable, very St Julien and very good. 50% new oak for ageing, Eric Boissenot consultant, Mathieu Bordes director since 2013.

The flagship from a 7-acre parcel in the estate vineyard, the 2016 Cahors Le Pigeonnier is another Pomerol look-alike with its beautiful bouquet of black cherries, blueberries, damp earth, white chocolate, and exotic spices. As with all these 2016s, it’s a ripe, powerful, opulent wine that doesn’t pull any punches, yet always stays balanced, elegant, and remarkably fresh. Made from 100% Malbec aged two years in new French oak, it builds beautifully with time in the glass, has a deep, layered mid-palate, and a blockbuster finish. It’s possibly the finest Cahors I’ve ever tasted and would pass undetected in a blind lineup of top Napa Cabernets. While it’s no doubt beautiful today, I suspect it will develop even more nuance and complexity with 3-4 years of bottle age and keep for 15-20 years.

The NV (2022) Extra Brut Les 7 is a blend of the seven permitted varieties in Champagne, based on 2022 but with 60% reserve wines from a mini-solera that dates back to 2005. Dried apricot, marzipan, chamomile and lightly honeyed accents fill out the layers gracefully. There's a lot to admire in Les 7, starting with its understated complexity and dynamic energy. Dosage is 3 grams per liter. Disgorged: December 2024; multiple disgorgements throughout the year.

From a single plot of western exposition and fermented and aged in barrels, the bright yellow 2019 Champagne Premiere Cru Blanc De Blancs Les Grandes Crayères Extra Brut is fresh and lifted with mineral character, offering notes of chalky freshness, bright lemon balm, delicate toasted incense, and fresh apple. Medium-bodied and focused, this age-worthy wine is all about its mineral texture and fine, focused mousse. There’s fantastic definition to the wine and a long persistence through the finish, with a hint of warmth. Angular and bright, it commands another couple of years in the cellar. The wood never feels heavy or even very noticeable at this point and will likely help to round this out if stored properly and given time. Drink 2025-2045. Disgorged November 2022. 2 grams per liter dosage.

The NV Champagne Ultradition Extra Brut is based on the 2022 vintage with 50% reserve wine, and the blend is 60% Meunier, 30% Chardonnay, and the rest Pinot Noir. Disgorged in September 2024, with 4 grams per liter dosage, it pours a pale straw/silver color. It’s beautiful and fruity upfront, with loads of fresh black raspberries and red fruit, accompanied by a salty freshness reminiscent of cherries and salted chocolate. Refreshing, clean, and medium-bodied, it has fantastic value. What a fabulous entry wine in the range for this year; it combines intellectual thought with ease of enjoyment and is a true value wine.
